  • On this week's Pubcast we're chatting XL Bullies and their owners, after Ed spent his weekend walking the streets of Westminster speaking to people who keep the soon-to-be-banned dogs.
We also look into the decision of some armed Met officers to hand in their firearms last week after one of their colleagues was charged with the murder of Chris Kaba in 2022.
Finally, Ava kickstarts a new segment all about Edwina Currie and John Major's tryst.

Of course, "pit bull" isn't a breed, but a group of breeds. And a study showed that there isn't a correlation of the group of breeds with agression.
What correlation there *is* is that large strong dogs who DO misbehave can cause a lot more damage. That's a real factor. But really no one should be misttreating dogs, so there's definitely some safeguards that could be put in place with adopting dogs.

The acceptance of mediocrity in this country is the thing that pisses me off the most these days as well. Honestly, I knew Brexit would be a disaster, but there was a hope in me that it would succeed and people would finally wake the f up and realise that it's the government, not the scapegoats they keep peddling that is at fault for all our problems. But no, people still accept this BS, they'll accept this BS when Starmer gets into office, and they'll accept this BS when the Conservatives eventually retake control in 5 or 10 years down the line. And they'll do it while acting all f-ing superior to migrants, refugees, and every other ethnic group around the world. We're living in a nation of massive f-ing hypocrits.

People are jumping to conclusions on this idea of them being forcibly put down. The most likely thing is that they have to muzzled and kept on a leash in public and neutered. Something which a lot of dog owners do anyway. People need to get the fck over it. You want a dangerous dog, accept there are rules that come with it. This makes so much sense. It reminds me of the gun law debate in America - why do people need machine guns? Why do people need 60kg+ dogs with bite forces that can break bone? The regularity with which certain breeds bite isn't even the main issue, it's the potential for damage that is the real concern. A dog of that size needs to only turn once to seriously injure or kill someone.
In Australia, we've had one woman this year who was mauled by one of her three pet rottweilers and nearly lost her arm, and just recently a man was killed by his rottweiler in Tasmania. His wife was also seriously injured.
This just cannot happen with a chihuahua, or even a cocker spaniel or Labrador. I've met lots of lovely lovely big dogs, but people need to address the fact that these animals have the potential to kill and seriously maim people in a very short amount of time, unlike other dogs.

      @BlessingofGeb Před 11 měsíci

But then there's the other side of being realistic. The most likely breed of dog in the UK to bite a person as an act of aggression is a labrador. German shepards and staffys close after according to a study published by pet insurers animal friends. Why not ban those breeds when they are responsible for so many attacks? What about Jack Russell's? Didn't Liverpool police release figures in 2016 showing it was Jack Russell's responsible for most attacks in Liverpool? Should we ban Jack Russell's? Should we ban dogs all together in summer months? Dog bites go up 10 percent in summer months.
The reality here is that a breed of dog that can look tough and therefore is common amongst drug dealers is being persecuted because of what some of these bad people are training these dogs to do.
What happens after you ban them? Drug dealers stop using dogs as weapons all together? No they buy an illegally bred one or a legal breed but train it to be just as deadly. The breed is not the problem, the UK is

I dont see why we shouldn't address poor dog ownership head on. As anyone who lived through the debate about Staffies being crossed with Pitbulls in the early 2010's will remember, banning a specific breed just leads to people picking the nearest looking alternative and claiming their banned dog is one of those.
We should have a size based license system, just like with motorcycles, cars and trucks. Have an accredited training scheme for anyone wanting a breed thats average weight is above 30kgs, breeds need to be certified by a vet, and we should have a flat "leads at all times" law when in public places for all dogs. I could even see it being a good idea for a dog trainer or vet to be able to issue an advisory temperament assessment for whether a dog should be muzzled in public. We microchip most dogs these days, it should be fairly easy to include this info on there.
Oh and anyone breeding and selling dogs needs to be licensed and inspected.

I was badly bitten by one these dogs - one that I rescued - twice within a week. When people hear this, they expect that I would be all in favour of a ban, and when they hear that I dont, they ask why not. This is why not: because im neither a simple minded moron, or a cowardly politician looking to score cheap political points by prescribing a simple solution to a complex problem, to hell with all the collateral damage, families torn apart and innocent dogs being murdered that would inevitably result.
It breaks my heart to think of the suffering that the dog I rescued, must have experienced in his first home, before being abandoned and ending up spending two years in a shelter. And it breaks my heart that I didnt have sufficient ability to fully rehabilitate him, and he had to go back to there.
Sadly, it is true that these dogs often attract the wrong sort of owners. Sad most of all for the dogs who often are twice victimised, first (in some, but by no means all cases), by their scummy owners who mistreat and torture them until they are made to become dangerous, and then by the state.
There is solution to the problem. But taking meaningful enforcement action against animal cruelty, and reliably sending people to prison for animal abuse, is obviously not a route the government wants to go down. Much easier to repeat a few thoughtless, easy soundbites, stoke popular resentments, grab some headlines in the right-wing press, and pass a decree - even knowing in advance that it will not, nor could ever, be successful in its ostensible aim - than do something that would be effective, but would actually take some thought and effort and money, which is plainly , far too much to ask of Sunak, Cruella, et al.

I think the discussion on armed officers was so disingenuous, it was so obvious that not one of them would ever look to serve the public and are more than happy to jump to conclusions and say.. well they are highly trained so tough luck, the comment also of no one asked them to do this job was disgusting.
Yes officers are highly trained, but no amount of training will prepare you for a real incident when you have to make that split second decision on if you should fire. There is hardly every any shots fired by the UK police due to the level of training they receive, any time they do the automatic assumption form the press and public is that they were wrong to fire, i am sure that the CPS are not swayed at all by public opinion of the met and have properly looked into this before deciding to charge the officer. All the officers are asking for is a fair look at their actions as anyone would want to and some support from their chain of command, no one has said they want crown immunity this is just another assumption from the hosts of this show.

On defining dog breeds, it's in the interests of government and police to keep the current status quo whereby police can visually say they are "of pitt type" and already can judge them to be dangerous to seize and destroy. Bullies are frequently mixed with mastiffs, staffies etc to get a bit of genetic variety, and if you have other mixed breeds within the acceptable niche then they're also going to be scrutinised as part of this.

A 60kg dog is larger than some adults, never mind children. His four year old is probably only like 20kg or something....
It's a melting pot of problems. People buying large aggressive dogs for the esthetic and the reputation. Those people will potentially not be able to handle something that size.
I have a 20kg spaniel, and if he sees a rabbit he can near take my arm off, never mind a dog that weighs the same as an adult and is even stronger.
I'm sure there are loads of responsible owners with well trained, well bred dogs, but when there is no pedigree to check that you have bought a responsibly bred animal, how do you do your due diligence?
How do you separate the responsible owners from the twats, because there is nothing surer than it's the twats that cause the problem, not the dogs.

17:34 If you cannot afford to neuter, muzzle, and register a dog ie with a chip (which is the law no?) and have a sufficient lead, you cannot own the dog, should not own the dog. Goes for any breed, goes for any animal. Having a pet is a luxury, a privilege, a responsibility which comes with expenses . Same as having children. I love sausage dogs but I know they are inherently a very attack prone, aggressive dog, hence why if I am able to have one I would take every precaution a large dog owner should. Size does not excuse aggressive poorly trained dogs. Yes indeed I could pick up a tiny dog, get it better under control but complacency is dangerous. I sympathise with the owners but those dogs are or were bred for a specific reason which genetically makes them dangerous. Nature will kick in, even very well trained dogs could revert back to natural instincts. Moreover I do have to question why a person wants a dog that has such capabilities of harm, goes for other breeds. Certain breeds just should not be pets. All the owners interviewed proved our fears. Like the owner who uses their dog for protection while out, granted I sympathise as the streets are dangerous for many and we are not protected properly, but I’m sure a drug dealer who owner one uses the same logic, to protect them, the owner in the black top, saying it’s genetics, that they are mixed with other breeds which don’t mix, often it is intense inbreeding which can causes issues too. You cannot say it’s the owners not training them, if they were trained attacks wouldnt happen l, while also saying it’s bad genetics which causes attacks. Which is it, surely ‘good owners and good training’ should bypass or override ‘bad genetics’, or is it ‘bad genetics’ win regardless?

Today it is the American Bully. In future it could be Rottweilers, Bullmastiffs, Akitas, Wolfhounds, or any large dog breed. Ultimately, any large dog could potentially be banned simply due to it’s size. If you ban guns, katanas, and crossbows then people with bad intentions will simply move to knives, which is why the UK government has been trying to ban knives. It is the same thing with dogs.

Regarding scrutiny of armed police the question is whether the IOPC/CPS are responding based on public pressure/politics rather than on the facts. We cant know without seeing the evidence, so we can only blindly trust, and trust is in short supply. The only way to really solve this is a complete overhaul of the police's attitude and culture to make the public and especially those from minority backgrounds trust them again, then we will have less polarity and unrest when it comes to cases like this.
