Are $150 Peerless 700 knockoffs from Amazon and eBay any good for mower racing?

- It was time to build a couple new peerless 700 transmissions for the racing mowers for this season. I first went on E.C. Carburators and then searched all over the internet and couldn't find any built racing mower tranny's. The ones I ordered are from Amazon but they are also sold on eBay too. The gearboxes are a very similar Chinese made no name brand clone of peerless 700s.
The listing for the exact transmissions I ordered (700-023) are out of stock from the seller I used but others are selling the same or similar models.
Good info. Dont be a stranger, we miss all the videos..
Thanks, we do need to start making some more videos
Let me give you a quick run down on these knockoff transmissions. I just destroyed one in 30 laps behind a vtwin GP race mower. Primary cause is what you called a steel bushing on the output shaft. Mine ended up being a cast aluminum looking material. It ground through that bushing and into the case in 30 laps. totally ruined the case.. I might be able to save the shaft by cleaning up on the lathe. I recommend replacing all of the bushing with a proper oilite bushing while it is apart to clean the grease out. All of the gears in mine appear to be sintered iron or steel. Not sure how long they would last under a real load. I am planning on trying to repair this case for a yard kart project for my kids. I have replaced with a New Old Stock Tecumseh trans from Ebay.
The knockoff trans I have is 1:1 in 4th gear. I can tell in the video yours is too. I ended up running mine in 5th gear; which is 1.28:1.
Thanks for the info, that's the weak point I hear too. We ran these transmissions all last season in and SP and BP with no issues. I'm probably going to look into installing needle roller bearings on the output shaft for this year.
I have always thought of milling the two additional slots into the key-shaft to have 4 shift keys, may end up doing that. Thanks for the video, always great content
I considered doing that too, I think the shafts are super hard though, maybe would require carbide tooling? Thanks for the view and comment!
@@TheJanticJournal You're welcome! Your channel is full of awesome gems and always informative; I always learn something from you all.
I consider myself fairly lucky; our local dump has a wealthy scrap pile, and they have had a rash of rear engine riders come in within the last year, I have gotten 3 peerless 700's from those rear engine riders. I have not been lucky finding the input seals up here in Canada, at least for a decent price.
Keep up the good work JJ
Hi I’m new to racing mowers could you please explain the use of a shift key
I got a peerless 700 for $20 and found peerless 700 new old stock steel pinion and bevel gear so I have those both steel. Then found in my Spicer transaxle a couple compatible steel gears so I now have almost all steel gears in mine. I also made a gear for the input side using a steel 31tooth and the neutral gear and welding them together. So now my first gear is 25-25 and second is 31-19. Yes I'm only running 2 gears cause it's on a vertical shaft motorcycle and I only need 2 gears. I'm also using lucal thick performance tractor trailer style duff oil fully synthetic. Has lasted great on the road.
good info. i welded my bevel gear to the input shaft
Love the videos man, give us all the content you can
Thanks for the support!
Odd question for a different application of these Transmissions: if you spin the input shaft one way the output shaft turns a certain way. If you turn the input shaft the opposite way does the output shaft likewise turn the opposite direction? Nice video, thank you very much.
Yes, it does.
Dumb question I got but would this transmission work on a mini bike by any chance?
There are no oil seals because the trans is made to use grease, not oil.The seal that was there was installed to keep water and dirt out.
Hey I just happened to have my Jantic Journal T-shirt on today, guess it's a sign.
I bought a peerless 700 knockoff from Amazon. It wouldn’t shift right out of the box. Returned it and rebuilt the original transmission
Originally Peerless are definitely the better option
Building my first mower so confused lol 😂
Do not bother with these reproduction transmissions. Find yourself a proper race built peerless 700 online. I've bought these aftermarket ones and they didn't even last a week. They work good at first until the point where the forks make contact with the gears disintegrate.
Hey man! I’m wanting to build one these. Got the mower etc but still trying to learn the ins and outs on how to build it, wish there was more updates vids on this rig! And ways we can swap emails on builds etc??
Go to heymow a lot of information on there. Or if you have Facebook get on some racing lawnmower groups
Where do you find parts for transmission not racing just cutting my lawn
How would these work as a replacement for a mower?
Do the "knockoffs" use bentonite grease?
Hey whats the link or listing title for the knock off on amazon?
thanks
Do you think they are OK for a stock predator 420cc 13hp will it exolode?
Literally what i came here to find out lol
They should be OK for a while but you can't shift under power or they will fail.
Pro-Gear T7531 is the same.
I have a 700 3 speed from a yard works cart, could you tell me what gears i need to buy to get the highest gearing ? I tried myself by googling but nothing fits ...:)
Pretty much all of the peerless 700 transmissions have different final gear ratios. In mower racing we usually run in whichever gear is a 1:1 ratio and setup our hearing with pulley sizes and sprockets
Can you shift while driving on a racing mower?
No, I've learned that lesson more than once lol
@@TheJanticJournal Hi, is there any reason why not? I ask this assuming you're releasing a clutch to cut torque to the trans before shifting, and they still break?
@@timjs1018 transmission is still in gear. The clutch only slips the belt.
can you advise on what output sprocket you use? im in the UK and its super hard to find information on these gearboxes etc over here. What size chain does it use? what sprockets and pulleys do you use?
I buy my sprockets from E.C. Carburetors and use #40 roller chain. The pulleys vary on each mower.
i welded my bevel gear on. that clip sucks
Where do you get the sprockets for the output shaft?
Ec carburetors sells them
My trans has 9 splines, where can I find a sprocket to fit?
Why are you always using peerless 700?
It let's you run a solid axle and allows you to isolate the trans from the shock applied to the wheels. It means they hold up much better and there is one less failure point
I have an original Tecumseh peerless 700 series transmission for sale.
still for sale?

I found that the parts are not interchangeable between the peerless and the knock offs. The input shaft spline is different, and so is the Ring Gear. Yup that input shaft seal is up side down, should be smooth on the outside. The" Channel " of the seal should be on the inside. Good to know they are holding up. Cant find any used peerless anymore around here. I use the 700-039 & 700-050 that use the roller bearing on the output shaft. See you at Bowels Farms ? Aug 5/6 2022?
