Hi Joy! This video has been so incredibly helpful! I have a form 1a student. We were strictly doing oral narration but I had a gut feeling it was important to start, very simply, a narration nbk so he could get used to the idea and habit or writing and drawing out his narrations. He dictates a sentence or two, I write, then he copies (I count as copywork) and draws it. I was concerned he wouldn't enjoy it but he actually does!
Thanks so much for your videos. I feel encouraged and inspired! And the examples for each grade was a HUGE help!

Thank you for this! This gives some perspective on what to expect. I need to buy Know and Tell for myself. I have a Grade 3 girl on AO Year 2, and since it's my first go-around (after having gone through traditional schooling myself) it can feel scary to commit to Charlotte Mason's methods. I question that maybe a text/workbook would give important details that I'll miss. But whever I start perusing currciulum, they feel so canned so I turn back to the CM way and keep on with what we are doing. :) I remind myself that I'm not that out of the box because thousands of people use AO with success. Have a great day!

You would make an excellent Speech language pathologist. This is a great video. I am new to CM and narration and composition are intimidating to me.

Can you make a video on older students? Also where did you learn the expectations to have for each child/grade? What resource did you use to really know how to do narration and what to expect for each child?

I read Know and Tell by Karen Glass, I have several mentors in town who have helped me a ton. I also read through School Education and Home Education by CM to help me get a better grasp. I highly recommend Karen's book!

This was just what I was looking for thank you soo much!! This was perfect example of written narration through 5th grade. I love how much you require from your students. Do you require a written narration for every subject or every book? I am just starting out with Charlotte mason homeschooling

Hi Angelita! I only require ONE narration per day from each student. My first grader: I let him pick which story he wants to narrate from our reading. Third Grade: he has one book assigned for a written narration per day - he only writes from that book - but he is still required to participate in oral narrations during reading. Fourth/fifth grade: has two readings assigned per day and writes one narration from one of those readings - she also is required to participate in oral narration during read aloud time.

I love your examples. I’ve read Know & Tell, but just to hear from another mom of what is expected helps pull it all together.
I’ve learned that my daughter has somewhat of a hard time listening. She has trouble narrating from those readings. However, if she reads or we share reading, then she has no difficulty. Do you have any insight on that? I really think it’s more attention than auditory learning problem. However, I personally feel like I understand and grasp info better if I read it myself, so I know that is real lol.

Thanks so much! It depends on how old your daughter is and what her strengths are. Each child is so different. Some kids need to have their own copy of a book to look at while it is being read aloud. For me personally, when I read through the Aeneid, it was impossible for me to read and grasp. I had to both listen to the audio and look at the words on the page in order to create the picture in my mind. It was like my brain was MUCH more likely to wander off when I had fewer senses engaged. Some books are harder than others to grab us.

My 3rd grader (AO Year 2) offers elaborate, multi-paragraph narrations -- but doesn't write them, she narrates orally and often I type what she tells. Should we be incorporating the occasional written narrations/drawings at this age...? I certainly don't want to stunt her abilities. Thank you for your insight!

I like to start the habit of writing daily. For my younger students, I start with drawing and one sentence. She will certainly be able to orally narrate better than she can write at her age. I have my third grader write 1-3 sentences daily including a rough picture drawing. We are currently building up to 5 sentences. He also has one short copywork assignment - but that's IT for writing. You may enjoy my video about third grade where I go into detail how it plays out in my third grader's day. Hope that helps!

We also do Charlotte Mason, and I would love to get your advice. My kids have no problem narrating, they can do a beautiful job. But, none of my kids like the written part. I'm trying to work on this. We do a lot of copy work. Because them putting their words onto paper terrifies them. So do you have any suggestions? My third and first grader love to write about things that they are interested in. But my fourth grader hates writing and want to avoid it at all costs. So I'm trying to figure out how to help him. But, so far I haven't found that thing yet. I'm lucky to get a few words out of him. Loved the video!! Thank you!

Okay... I've been trying to feel successful with home education and by successful I mean the children (4 kids 6 and under) are enjoying the content, staying interested, and are looking forward to things.
Lemme tell ya, since I took your tips, first about having a plan or daily flow and incorporating fables and fairy tales I've seen such improvement.
    🥲
Also bought that Aesop's fables book per your recommendation and they LOVE it.
