  • Ling or Red Hake are one of the most common and delicious fish in the northeast. Fun to catch and once you clean a couple, can be easy to fillet yourself!

Long are one of my favorite tasting fish. Excellent deep fried, Pam fried, baked or in chowders.

Agree on the Chowder that’s’ one of my old time fav ways to enjoy Ling. They hold up pretty well in the freezer so in winter they make awesome chowders.

N-E Fishing the other ones I caught on the paramount I just went ahead and gutted the ling and cleaned it out to cook whole.

@@eastcoastfishin5885 they're good whole, I keep a couple whole for frying. The rest are filleted and breaded or beer battered. I usually catch enough for storing in vacuum sealed bags for later days

My buddy and I caught a few of these a few miles past Montauk .
They were a bi-catch as we targeted
fluke and black sea bass. I prefer not to cut thru the gut sack leaving the ribs in the filet. Also the dark membrane is off putting to me.

The dark membrane scrapes off very easy but I know what you mean! Mates on party boats avoid the guy pocket and remove the fillets by begining the cut right after the ribs end for easier process. The only down side is you loose a small portion of fillet behind the head, but if you catch several you still get a good amount of meat! Super tasty and I think they have a natural sweetness to meat that is top notch!

The most important thing for me is to get all bones out. As a teen I had to go to the hospital for a bone in my throat. It was scary . As for porgy meat I've always liked it. Some people think it is not a palatable fish. I like it and have always wanted to catch some "Jumbo Porgy". A friend of mine caught a 21" last year. I have seen some good ones caught by others. What brand of knife do you use in the video ? Thanks

@@jussitikkuri6991 I totally understand if you had a bad experience dealing with fish bones so early on! Once I understood the basic bone structure of fish I never had a problem with accidentally swallowing a bone! Porgies are fantastic, especially grilled whole! If you want to get some jumbos you have to go on a deep wreck trip 60-80 miles out, although you might have a good chance closer in out of Montauk. I like the Dexter Russell brand of knifes. It a quality knife that doesn't have to break the bank and are used by meat processors.
