    What a balanced and mature assessment! You will have a great time and receive an outstanding education at Kings - particularly for Medicine. Of course you would have also received the same at Oxford, but the workload would have been stupendous too. Entry to Oxbridge is fantastically competitive for everything, but particularly for Medicine and you clearly did very well in all of the elements of your application and you gave it your very best shot. You are very wise to take your Kings offer & not re-apply. You will do very well, I’m sure and will be an outstanding doctor.

    Great video, Shaan. Really informative and engaging (I'm just binge watching all of your videos at this point). I'm concerned that not taking A-level biology will disadvantage me at the interview stage although I got a 9 in GCSE biology (I didn't take it because I wasn't sure I wanted to do medicine). Any advice?

    • @LifeofShaan
      @LifeofShaan  Před 2 lety +2

      It may limit where you can apply but there are a good number of universities that have no issue if you don’t have a-level biology (as long as you do chemsitry). For those universities you won’t be at a disadvantage but they may suggest you learn certain topics during the summer before you start so you are caught up on the relevant parts of the course!

  • @bhangrafan4480
    @bhangrafan4480 Před 3 lety +87

    The REAL reason people go to Oxford and Cambridge is to make personal connections with the elite. From a purely academic point of view there are plenty of other top universities in the UK where you will be taught by world leading experts, but which are much easier to get into. In addition to this some of these other universities have strong elite membership and connections, if that is what matters to you. Working for a few years at UCL I was amazed by some of the people whose children were studying there, and by some of the alumni who visit. I really don't see why people are so obsessed with getting into Oxbridge, you can do just as well elsewhere.

    • @its_mil_4816
      @its_mil_4816 Před 3 lety +47

      ... Or because the courses they offer are simply better or a better fit for the person applying... which is true in many cases

    • @its_mil_4816
      @its_mil_4816 Před 3 lety +17

      @Edexcel Maths Solutions I would only suggest that the 'making connections...' bit would be true in the minds of fairly rich parents who are specifically trying to get their kids into Oxbridge. My reasoning for applying is solely the fact that i think the course at Oxford for my subject area is perfect for me. There will definitely be those who are affected by your point too, however.

    • @banana9106
      @banana9106 Před 2 lety +5

      A lot of it is about how employers PERCEIVE Oxbridge graduates as being better than graduates from other universities. My son wants to go to Cambridge and I would support him in taking out loans to go to either Oxford or Cambridge. But if he does not get in then I will tell him to do a degree apprenticeship, because I can not afford to bail him out of debt.

    • @bhangrafan4480
      @bhangrafan4480 Před 2 lety +3

      @@banana9106 There are lots of good universities in the UK where people are taught by world beating experts, Imperial, UCL even Leicester. All of that is well known and well understood by employers. The difference if you go to Oxbridge is to make the contacts in high places which will get you into top positions. Which is the point I was making. People in industry do not just think that Oxbridge graduates are the only good ones, but every important institution is stitched up by Oxbridge graduates, who knew other Oxbridge graduates and their friends and relatives. It's the old boy network. Many successful people from Oxbridge did not get good degrees, but spent time socialising and making the right friends who got them into top jobs in the media, the city or the civil service.

    • @banana9106
      @banana9106 Před 2 lety +1

      @@bhangrafan4480 Sadly, my son has autism and my husband left us. I have looked after him and not worked. Like I say, I might barely have the money to survive myself, let alone bale him out of massive debts. So he needs to get somewhere where he is pretty much guaranteed of a good job afterwards. Where people will see that he is an Oxbridge graduate ahead of his autism. If not he might as well do a degree apprenticeship and avoid a lifetime of debt.

    If you want to get into Cambridge you should apply to one of the more modern colleges that get fewer applications. And apply to do something daft like Divinity who are desperate for applicants.
    Once you’re there feign some lip service interest in Divinity but go to lectures in the subject you want to do (this is allowed) and then about half way through first year at latest transfer to that subject fully. Work your arse off though, to make sure the transfer is allowed.

Always interesting for people. 20% of people in the UK go to fee paying schools for sixth form so the % at Oxbridge from there is not too out of line given about 70% at Oxbridge go to fee paying schools. Grammar schools (very privileged UK non fee paying schools) where Shaan goes will not get as much extra credit as worse schools and those with children who have free school meals.
