    I swear the videos that are like “I got rejected by” or “I failed my...” are better than the ones about succeeding. It shows so much more when a person is able to stare into a camera and talk about not getting what they wanted and how they’re choosing to deal with it or move on with their life. It’s feels super mature and is a million times more educational than watching a person get in and basically just brag about being lucky. Thanks for this, bud.

    It’s obvious there are too many applicants qualified for Cambridge/Oxford (& fully invested in the idea of it) and simply not enough places. Working hard isn’t enough. It’s also down to luck & factors outside your control. At least with trying twice you know it definitely wasn’t meant to be

      I don't think "luck" has anything to do with it. It is a case of as I said to Kevin previously that certain types of students are better adapted to the teaching style and indeed the academic environment than others and simply at 18/19 some students may not be at that stage. Furthermore, not everyone who is statistically smart would cope with the Oxbridge workload. Even at postgrad it's still hard work. When I went to Cambridge even though my MPhil was only for a year that workload and terms were intense, the pass marks were high with little room for ever and I guess at that level there is an expectation you will be more proficient in your subject material. After Cambridge I went onto UPenn before I then went on to Oxford and even though I'd already had experience at two "elite" universities prior to Oxford and with my programme being part-time, I still found it very hard: the level of reading required and the attention to detail but given Oxford is one of if not the best in the world for the subject I studied there, this shouldn't have come as any surprise. I'd say to anyone feeling disappointed that they didn't get in at undergrad: don't be. I mean of course you will be disappointed that's natural but focus on what you have now/at the moment and if you really want to go to Oxbridge or indeed an Ivy League/MIT/Caltech/Stanford/Chicago, if you do well in your studies and come up with a strong research proposal for a masters or PhD, there's no reason why you can't go on to do that later. Put it this way, a 1st from UCL/Imperial or even a 2:1 from all Russell Group unis and most other decent sized/ranked universities in the UK would be viewed "better" than a 3rd from Oxbridge. For postgrad study I can guarantee you nobody who got a 2:2 or below would get into postgrad at Oxford or Cambridge. Ironically I know someone who got a 2:2 who went to Columbia. Study is also about progression, if you get better with age and time there's no reason why you can't do it later on.

I did, however, also make an application for a PhD in scientific computing at Cambridge and got an unofficial offer recently. Hi, refreshing to observe someone dealing with that type of situation so well. If you still wish to get into Cambridge, try to get a first in your degree and take a masters at Cambridge. The truth is that not studying at Cambridge for undergrad is no big deal and may actually work out favourably for you, as employers will admire your determination if you eventually get in. UCL to Cambridge is a transition I see many students take. Good luck.

      Cambridge MPhil is not as prestigious as the BA/MA. It's really not that tough to get on most Cambridge MPhil courses (you can get in with a 2:1, even if they ask for a first), the training is nowhere near as vigorous as it is for the BA/MA, and you're only there for a few months. Many of the MPhil students were rejected for the BA/MA and seem to be on the MPhil in part to heal from their first rejection. Employers care less and less about university degrees nowadays - much more impressive to use the year you would spend on your MPhil setting up a small business, creating something truly original, or mastering your powers of persuasion.

To be honest there's no denying that the next couple of days/weeks/months will be difficult to deal with not getting something you really wanted. It's really how you deal with it, you can come out of it so much better. If you desperately want to go to Cambridge then reapply if that's what you want, don't let being afraid to fail again prevent you from getting something you want. Brilliant video. I feel this pressure on applying to Oxford or Cambridge, because there is this encompassing perception that if you work hard you can get there. And I really think I can get the grades, like you said. But I just don’t know if it’s “right” for me but I also want to prove that idea wrong, if you understand me. I feel I almost HAVE to apply, as if getting into Cambridge makes you “smarter” or superior to other students. It is frustrating as I know I would thrive in an academic environment like Oxford/Cambridge, I wouldn’t even mind the weekly essays and hard graft. But I just don’t know if I genuinely want to apply. Sorry for the ramble, I hope this makes sense at all, and if other top students can relate to this pressure (not trying to big myself up, but with better grades comes a pressure to prove them, like getting into a university like these)

    If I can add my two cents worth here: getting into Cambridge (or indeed Oxford) is about so much more than just the grades. It's a given that the vast majority of those applying will have or exceed the minimum entry requirements, even with very high UMS scores. However, not every student with A*AA or A*A*A or even A*A*A* would necessarily be the right fit for the environment with the supervision/tutorial system and the INTENSE workload and short terms. For example, it's not uncommon on many courses to be doing as many as three essays of about 2000 words each, every week. And for the sciences like Medicine, this will be in addition to lab reports etc. It's the same with medical schools outside of Oxbridge. The step up from A-Levels to university can be vast and so it's not always a good fit for even the very best candidates on paper. Also as others have pointed out it is a numbers game with places being oversubscribed. That being said, not getting in at undergrad isn't the end of the world as you can always go there to do a Master's or even a PhD or even a second undergraduate degree (in two years instead three) but of course that would still mean needing to get at least a 2:1 or a 1st in your bachelor's degree (or at least 3.5-3.7 GPA in the US). Ultimately at 17/18 we don't always know for definite what we want to do for the rest of our lives and we still have time to mature academically/intellectually. I know plenty of people who did their undergraduate degrees elsewhere and then went on to do postgraduate at Oxbridge. I know one person who did their undergrad at the Open University and went on to study at both Oxbridge and an Ivy League school. So the door is certainly not closed on Oxbridge if you really want to go there but only do so for the academic interests and the benefits to your career etc. There are plenty of other world-class universities out there providing a strong education on par and sometimes exceeding Oxbridge both in the UK and abroad and also very much dependent on your subject area. I would not readily recommend people declining offers just for the sake of reapplying to Oxbridge especially if you are a Medicine or VetSci applicant holding an offer, it would be the stupidest thing imaginable. Good luck with your career at UCL.

      @@kevlarryt No worries. The example I actually gave was my own. I'm also looking at the possibility of doing Graduate Medicine at Cambridge but I know for a fact the course is incredibly tough at Cambridge, maybe more so than at other medical schools as the pass marks are incredibly high like 65% min and in some papers 70-80%. On paper I'm qualified enough and of course an alumnus of Camb (and Oxford) but that wouldn't mean I'd be good enough for the Medicine course. I know you applied for something else but the same applies, many have great grades but might not adapt well to the teaching style and the mental and physical demands of studying at Cambridge but there's no reason why you can't come for postgraduate study or even a second undergraduate degree if that's what you really want to do. @@kevlarryt I mean for now focus on what you're doing at UCL. You never know by the time you're done you might just want to go straight into work or even go to a university abroad (I did both Oxbridge and Ivy League ftr). Of course you'd still need to get a 2:1/1st and at least with Oxford there might be an interview. But at that stage you are assumed to have a higher level of knowledge and the focus of the interview tends to be more on the research proposal, what you know about that subject area and current research on the topic as well as the relevance of your previous study and research experience. And as I said people (like me) have done undergrad at places many wouldn't consider "prestigious" and gone onto a stellar academic and professional career so by being at UCL you already have a massive advantage of being at a world-class university that has a strong reputation both in the UK and abroad. I would propose use of the term 'redirected from' Cambridge, as they have people applying who would be perfectly good members of the College but they simply can't make room for everyone.
    They can't make room as there is *competition* for the top stratum of university applicants, from the likes of UCL, who want their fair share and don't want Oxbridge to monopolise.
    So each and every person who tries out for Oxbridge and ends up somewhere else, is not so much a failure as they might think they are. They prevent Oxbridge from becoming complacent.

    • @kevlarryt
      @kevlarryt  Před 3 lety +2

      Everyone who applies to Oxbridge is good enough to get in, there just isn't enough places for all the good applicants as you said!

    • @ffibnogab7644
      @ffibnogab7644 Před 3 lety +1

      And the next thing I said is even more important - the existence of legitimate academic rivals, such as Imperial, UCL, Manchester, the list goes on, keeps Oxbridge from becoming arrogant. They have to keep improving.
      So, perversely, it is in the best interests of Oxbridge, to not hoover up each and every student who applies, to keep those they do accept, on their toes.
      You can see this in University Challenge, where you'd better know your stuff because *they* certainly will, over at Imperial, UCL, LSE, Manchester, etc.

    I was rejected by Oxford three times (BA PPE, DPhil Philosophy, DPhil Politics). I'm now at Warwick doing a PhD in Politics (where I did my undergrad). I've definitely tried to make the most of my time, but there's no denying Oxford rejection still hurts all these years later, especially when three of my closest schoolfriends all got into Oxbridge. Rejection makes you the person you are today: wear those battle scars proud man! Just study it well to get best grade and industry experience you want. Same as doing medicine. Does not really matter where you study it. There are 27,000 universities in the world. This year Leeds University is ranked at 86 the QS international tables which brings it within the top one third of one percent of world universities.. It is of course a Russell group university. The top 100 employers in the UK (ie The High Flyers' report which is viewable online) ) publish an annual ranking of the 20 universities whose graduates they favour most. In the real world this counts for quite a lot more than the often baffling and sometimes downright bizarre national rankings that appear in publications like the Times and the Guardian newspapers (Lancaster and Loughborough universities were consistently placed as top ten universities in the Times national rankings???!!! You have got to be kidding!!!).
    For 2022 the High Flyers' list places Leeds at number 5 out of 120 UK universities for the employment appeal of its graduates. Cambridge is ranked at number 7 and Oxford is ranked at number 10.
    As the biggest centre outside London for banking and legal services Leeds is the wealthiest city in the north of England with upmarket shops, restaurants and cafes. The university has a very attractive and safe campus 10 minutes walk from the busy city centre with its attractive blend of Victorian and Neo Classical as well as glass and steel commercial buildings. In and around the campus itself there is some lovely architecture and a buzzing social scene.
    Of the UK's 120 universities Leeds falls consistently within the top three for the number of applicants. With an impressive international standing for the quality of its research and a first rate social scene Leeds will always be a serious choice for a great many academically gifted undergraduates and postgraduates. It is the 51st most international university in the world.

    It's called Fitzwilliam College, not Fitzwilliam's College. If you didn't get the name of the college right, it is not surprising that they were unimpressed by you. Also, if you want to get on, learn how to pronounce "th". It's "think", not "fink", "everything", not "everyfink". These things matter.
