    A Leather Skiving Machine is specially designed to skive/split/reduce in thickness of narrow pieces of leather material.
    According to its 'Feed roller' the maximum width to skive or split leather pieces is of 50 mm.
    Wider pieces are split with 'Leather splitting machines'. Big ones in the tannery for full leather hides and smaller machines for pieces 45 cm wide approx.
    It is possible to skive wider pieces with a 'Leather skiving machine' though. To do it so, it is necessary to follow certain tips explained in this video.
    As mentioned before, this machine is not only useful for shoemakers or leather artisans but for us the car trimmers who sometimes need to reduce in thickness the edges of leather material to achieve perfect car upholstery projects.
    I hope you find some inspiration and enjoy this video!
    Cesar

    Some curved presser feet are relatively flat, making more contact with the leather, and some are slanted, making less contact with the leather. My machine came only with the slanted curved feet. I think the flatter curved feet might be better for general purpose skiving, especially panel skiving.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 2 lety +2

      Actually, presser feet are slightly angled to minimize friction against the dragging barrel.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 7 měsíci +1

      This clutch mechanism comes with the Fortuna machine I have.
      The feed roller moves independently from the bell knife.
      When I turn on the machine the bell knife runs. The feed roller only moves fast or slow if I press the pedal
      to engage the clutch mechanism.

    Do you sharpen the knife with the stone while simultaneously skiving? I started doing this and began getting better results, especially when going down to 0.5mm on more delicate leathers.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 2 lety +2

      In my case, I don't do that. I do the sharpening with the
      grinding stone. Then I move backwards the stone and start deburring the inside edge of bell knife.

      @@Cechaflo I have had my machine for only a short period of time and was doing a exactly what you have written. Then, following the advice of a Japanese master skiver, I started sharpening while skiving and got better results. This is with a Chinese knife installed. Maybe with a better knife this won't be as necessary.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Před 3 lety +3

      As mentioned in the video the most important tip is the 'bell knife' should be well sharpened as a razor blade. Otherwise causes waves or marks.
      The 'grindstone' should be new if possible. The edge of the 'grindstone' should be vertically even to do the angled sharpening of bell knife blade.
      The 'grindstone' should be a soft one to avoid burning the bell knife edge. It is an error the use hard grindstones.
      The correct grindstones make itself powder if the pressure against bell knife edge is too hard...this is a kind of protection.
