A Leather Skiving Machine is specially designed to skive/split/reduce in thickness of narrow pieces of leather material.
According to its 'Feed roller' the maximum width to skive or split leather pieces is of 50 mm.
Wider pieces are split with 'Leather splitting machines'. Big ones in the tannery for full leather hides and smaller machines for pieces 45 cm wide approx.
It is possible to skive wider pieces with a 'Leather skiving machine' though. To do it so, it is necessary to follow certain tips explained in this video.
As mentioned before, this machine is not only useful for shoemakers or leather artisans but for us the car trimmers who sometimes need to reduce in thickness the edges of leather material to achieve perfect car upholstery projects.
I hope you find some inspiration and enjoy this video!

If you watch all 4 parts becomes a great seminar for skiving machine. Very nice work. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I am from Poland but I would love to come to practice the art of upholstery with a master like you
I have found that for panel skiving with inexpensive Chinese presser feet it is important to file down the toe and heel a little bit.
thanks for the video...love seeing tools in use...I bought a small skive that I have to pull through...that is all I needed
A leather skiving machine is a very useful tool for shoemakers, leather artisans, including car upholsterers.
+1. .. Luv the gifted artistry! .. Dang, that’s good.
Love your skill's 👍

Bonsoir monsieur merci beaucoup pour explication de la pareuse j'espère que je pourrai acheter monsieur si vous permettez envoyer les mesures ou le modèle que j'ai vue dans cette vidéo porte feuille et monnaie merci patron
Muito bom gostei um super like 🇧🇷
Some curved presser feet are relatively flat, making more contact with the leather, and some are slanted, making less contact with the leather. My machine came only with the slanted curved feet. I think the flatter curved feet might be better for general purpose skiving, especially panel skiving.
Actually, presser feet are slightly angled to minimize friction against the dragging barrel.
@@Cechaflo True. There are some that have an even greater angle. I've ordered the more standard feet with a slight angle.
@pequodexpress how wide is your presser foot you are using for panel skiving. I have no idea what flatter curved feet looks like. I never succeed doing panel skiving, wondering what caused such trouble--foot, feeder etc. Still finding out.
@@thamwong4016 czcams.com/video/QVyYC3-Zbug/video.htmlsi=kV775v14Pe1S3uLz&t=166 The slanted presser foot I am using for panle skiving is 25 mm wide. A slanted curved presser foot avoids friction rubbing.
can you tell me why it injures my skin from above and tears it? which is due;
It mostly happens when the bell knife is not well sharpened.
Greetings! There was no video for a long time, I already started to worry
Dear colleague, I am so glad for your kind comment! Fortunately, the cameraman (my son) is on vacation now.

Does your skiver have two motors?
It only has one motor.
So, if I'm understanding right, you stopped the roller from mechanically spinning and manually pulled the leather over it?
Sorry, I did not see this comment until now. I suppose you are referring to the picture. Yes. after stopping the feed roller I pulled the upper and lower leather strips.
How are you able to engage the feed roller independently of the Bell knife?
This clutch mechanism comes with the Fortuna machine I have.
The feed roller moves independently from the bell knife.
When I turn on the machine the bell knife runs. The feed roller only moves fast or slow if I press the pedal
to engage the clutch mechanism.
Fantastic, thank you for the reply
I am a self taught auto upholster in Australia and your videos have always taught me so much! And I am so grateful 😊
Do you sharpen the knife with the stone while simultaneously skiving? I started doing this and began getting better results, especially when going down to 0.5mm on more delicate leathers.
In my case, I don't do that. I do the sharpening with the
grinding stone. Then I move backwards the stone and start deburring the inside edge of bell knife.
@@Cechaflo I have had my machine for only a short period of time and was doing a exactly what you have written. Then, following the advice of a Japanese master skiver, I started sharpening while skiving and got better results. This is with a Chinese knife installed. Maybe with a better knife this won't be as necessary.
@@pequodexpress I now understand.

I have" fortune " shoots waves I don't know what to do.
As mentioned in the video the most important tip is the 'bell knife' should be well sharpened as a razor blade. Otherwise causes waves or marks.
The 'grindstone' should be new if possible. The edge of the 'grindstone' should be vertically even to do the angled sharpening of bell knife blade.
The 'grindstone' should be a soft one to avoid burning the bell knife edge. It is an error the use hard grindstones.
The correct grindstones make itself powder if the pressure against bell knife edge is too hard...this is a kind of protection.
@@Cechaflo thanks,I changed the knife to a new blue color, sharpened a knife, better. Before that, the bell knife had a beating (I checked with a marker.) I'll sharpen it again, try it...
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Please tell me the size of the presser foot for wide areas of skin (video 3:02)
It is the medium size presser foot 1 ¼" of an inch. It touches the upper part of the barrel.
@@Cechaflo Thank you! It is 30mm or 35 mm?
@@weter141276 32 mm approx.
@@Cechaflo Thank you!
@@Cechaflo have you ever tried using presser wider than 32 mm. I am currently using 40 mm and I had a hard time as leather will always be torn and damaged. I think the shorter the presser the easier for panel skiving
