The oother ranks were originally (during it's prwar terroitorial days mostly London taxi drivers. My Dad was from Liverpool and got drafted. He was slightly irritated from time to time when stories of battles were told on TV or in books and mentioned only famous regiments, overlooking utfits like the Inns Of Court. It didn't matter to him but it was an irritation si thank you Mark. One entire troop (I think) was lost when its' landing craft capsized and tragically evreyone drowned! They had just been transferred en masse to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards so the loss is recorded in ther records.Again Thank you Mark Felton I wish my Dad could've seen this.

Didn't happened, the Brits just once again wound up jumping in boats to escape by sea ala Dunkirk. The Brits were so terrible when it came to bridges there was even a movie about them, a bridge and a disaster. The Bridge Over the River Kwai is a great fictional movie but...

I served in a reserve regiment in the Canadian army that had this problem. Half the sergeants were cops in their day jobs and half the officers were lawyers. At one point the commanding officer was a provincial court judge and the adjutant was a crown attorney. In the rest of the army if someone was being charged and taken in front of he commanding officer for a summary trial, they would have their hat removed and be quick marched into the COs office by the RSM and a couple of escorts. After some lawyerly arguing about this in the mess one night our regimental tradition was changed so that the accused did not remove his hat until he had been convicted, since when he marched into his trial he was only an accused man and not a convicted man. As far as I know we were the only regiment that does it that way, and it's a direct result of having so many lawyers among the officer ranks at the time.

Fascinating! I would have thought that a military unit comprised of lawyers would have been assigned to courts martial cases, staff officers advising commanders on the laws of war, etc., similar to the U.S. Judge Advocate Corps (JAG Officers). Instead, these barristers were fighting enlisted men! This reminds me of the First Troop, Philadelphia Cavalry, a unit that traces its lineage back to the American Revolution, during which it served as a personal reconnaissance and bodyguard unit for General George Washington. It is now part of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and is such a famous and prestigious unit that many professionals in the city who would qualify to be commissioned officers in other units choose to instead enlist in the First Troop, Philadelphia Cavalry as private soldiers. A great story of guts and glory, along with heartbreak and tragedy from London’s “Devil’s Own”!

I visited the unit in 1988, which has a museum in their armory building, itself about 140 years old. I saw an original signed letter from George Washington while I was there, among other documents pertaining to my research. Unfortunately, when I was back in Philadelphia vacationing with my family in 2014, we made a brief visit to the armory, where I was informed that there had been a fire, the museum portion was closed indefinitely, and that the collection had been moved. I do not know how much damage was done by the fire.

It's very easy for a regiment of lawyers to take over land. All they have to do is declare "eminent domain", and they get full possession.
In taking over bridges, they would get them condemned, and abandoned.

I knew a bit about this as the unit appears in Multi-Man Publishing's *mammoth sized* board wargame game *The Greatest Day: Sword, Juno & Gold Beaches.*
"17.8 C Squadron/Inns of Court Historical Note: this Unit had a special mission. It was to race behind enemy lines and blow bridges over the Orne to impede German reinforcements coming onto the battlefield. They were matched up with 73rd Field, RE and together went off to the races to find targets. Things didn’t go as planned as they had trouble getting off the beaches after being accidentally attacked by a friendly tank, then, after reorganizing and trying again on day two, they were strafed by USAF Thunderbolts …but have a go yourself and see what happens. C/Inns of Ct Unit is always In Command and may pass Troop Quality checks in lieu of spending command points (just like Commandos). They can also blow any bridge in the game (not just named ones). Just end up adjacent to one, perform an Engineer Action and roll the die…0 and it’s blown. Place a Bridge Destroyed marker on the Bridge and it doesn’t exist any more. If you roll a 6-9, well, any number of unfortunate things are considered to have happened and the Unit is eliminated. If you roll a 1-5, nothing happens. As an added incentive (and to give a reason for the space being spent on this Unit), if you manage to blow a bridge over the Orne (the Orne extends from 43.048 to 38.035), reduce the 21st Panzer-Division Troop Quality by one. Blow another one over the same river and you can reduce the 12th SS Panzer-Division Troop Quality by one…but that’s all you get. Good Luck."

I would therefore would think that any horse moving during daylight, in Germany or Austria in 1945 would be seen a a military target, especially by Pilots trying to save lives amongst allied troops.
My Grandad put his survival (In Churchill tanks) directly down to the Anti-Tank / ground attack aircraft flown by the Allied Forces (they did get shot up by the US however on more than one occasion).

Friendly fire is tragic. They call it the fog of war but it is more like a dark curtain. Having served in a rifle squad I can see how it happens regardless of steps taken to prevent it. Things are happening so fast while fear and survival instincts are heightened and you are having to make split-second life or death decisions. Hindsight is always so clear. I can't imagine the grief those involved in friendly fire incidents feel.
