  • A review of the new 009 Quarry Hunslet 'Britomart' from Bachmann's narrow gauge range!

    One of the first things that got me thinking seriously about a 009 layout was the announcement of the Quarry Hunslets back in 2018. Now a few years later the models have finally arrived and I was very excited to my hands on one.
    While it was ultimately the Double Fairlies that pushed me into building my 009 layout in a suitcase Gofod Tynn, the Quarry Hunslets to me are the quintessential narrow gauge engine. These small cute locos come in a variety of brightly coloured liveries with both open and closed cab variants.
    I've gone for one of the closed cab versions, Britomart in lined blue with the real engine being preserved at the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales. There's no denying that these good looking locos are small though and I imagine it must have been a challenge to fit the usual amount of detail into such a small model.
    Bachmann have been riding high with the success of their other recent narrow gauge locos so will the Quarry Hunslets live up to that? You'll have to watch to find out.

    This new Quarry Hunslet locomotive is an extremely beautiful looking model and there are multiple variations of this particular model from Bachmann to choose.

      Yep, like I mentioned in the video there's also the open cab versions of this loco too. Bachmann have also announced/released the Mainline Hunslets recently as well, which look very good! Thanks for watching 😃

    Very nice review of this iconic loco. Level of detailing seems outstanding, especially considering its microscopic size. Though the starting and stopping speeds are high, while running around the layout it looks pretty good to me. It must be difficult stuffing a decent motor and gearing inside that tiny boiler. Great job to all.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yes I think it's a coreless motor which is how it can be so small. Not sure if that has anything to do with the running but it does look good on the layout. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get it sorted. Thanks for watching 😃

    Several of my friends in the OO9 Society have brought these engines to our monthly track nights, and they really are lovely little things - and very, very tempting. The fact they run so well out of the box is impressive, and positive. As an aside, the Quarry Hunslets could well have been the original inspiration for Rowland Emmett's 'Nellie' - if you look at the early drawings, you're clearly looking at a Penrhyn Hunslet. And can I say that your layout is lovely to see - like it very much.

    I love quarry Hunslets, I volunteer on the footplate at the Bala Lake Railway. I'd definitely suggest adding the wooden toolbox on the tank, as the Pen-yr-Orsedd examples had them in service and Britomart carries her's still (along with a tiny navy steam siren)

    I saw a Bachmann open cab Hunslet in black with red, white and blue lining. It looked really handsome, and I think it would make a great addition to your fleet. Also, Britomart could be Godfod Tynn's express engine.

    Very nice review!! Just to add one point, from what I know the doors on the back are mainly to aid the fireman in spreading the coal evenly around the firebox as large long fire irons don't fit properly in the cab. Locos like Corries No.7 have a similar opening for the same reason.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    Gofod Tynn is a very nice layout. Small and compact. One day, However, I would like to see a Much Bigger OO9 scale layout to be built. One that demonstrates the hard working conditions Welsh Narrow Gauge Engines went through in large Slate Quarries. I, being a Thomas Fan, made my own OC's, and one day, when I start modeling, hopefully, I will recreate most of my OC's in OO & OO9 scale.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem

      As nice as it would be to have a large 009 layout, unlike a lot of other model railway CZcamsrs, I just don't have the loft/shed space or a dedicated room for large layouts. That's why everything I build tends to be fairly compact. Even the 00 gauge layout I'm currently building is modular in design since it I don't have the space to have it setup all the time.

      I have to admit I didn't find hardwiring a decoder into a Hornby 0-4-0 all that challenging when I did it with a standard size 8 Pin. I even had enough space left over to fit in a firebox LED and a smoke generator. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @Fluff3H
    @Fluff3H Před rokem

    my assumption to it struggling at low speeds before taking off might be due to its lack of weight, being so small of course. some 0-4-0s have that issue at 00 Gauge and you compare them to the Peckett W4s which, mechanically are essentially the same but they weigh a good bit more for the size and have plenty of low end torque and control.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem

      Yes that may be the case. I believe the saddle tank is metal (it's certainly cold to the touch) but it's still fairly light so it may just be it's not contacting the rails enough. The Pecketts are certainly enormous compared to this. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yes and no.I believe h0e is the narrow gauge scale for H0 while 009 is the equivalent for 00 Gauge. That said, 009 is a bit of a hybrid as it brings all UK narrow gauge locos under one umbrella. In reality the locos from the Ffestiniog and Talyllyn (for example) couldn't run together because of different track gauges.
      Also Bachmann released it's Skarloey engines in the Thomas range as h0e scale but the vast majority of modellers in the UK here consider them close enough for 009 layouts so I think it's easier to get away with mixing the two scales than it is for H0 and 00.

    Lovely model, saw the prototypes some time ago, the running is odd, I've played with one never experienced it can depend on controllers, and potentiometer values, some do have dead spots which looks like it may be the issue and some of these coreless motors can be a bit fussy. The DCC chip issue is world wide due to the chips used to make them... also a problem in the computer industry.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem

      Yeah I've had locos from Bachmann in the past that were truly terrible at slow running on DC but once fitted with a decoder they were transformed so I'm hoping it'll be as simple as that. The chip issue will go on for some time it's been the situation for almost a year.. so I expect DCC modellers will struggle to find chips in the near future.
