- Mike's had another 'good idea' and the Hornby Magazine team are building a new narrow gauge model railway. Join Mike Wild and Richard Watson as they embark on the 'quick' project to model a Ffestiniog theme narrow gauge layout inspired by the arrival of Bachmann's first ever ready-to-run 'OO9' Double Fairlie 0-4-4-0T in just 8ft x 2ft 6in.

What a brilliant job to have. ENVY!
Fantastic video guys, the layout looks like it has amazing potential! It's always a highlight of the month when you release these longer videos and it's great to see you doing something in 009 again for the new Double Farlies. Looking forward to seeing more progress next month! 👍
Thanks, Really pleased you enjoyed it! How's your layout coming along?
@@hornbymag Slowly but surely 😂 Hoping to find some time to work on it over Christmas!
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Hurry up, need to get over to photograph it ;)
@@hornbymag Now there's an incentive to get it finished! 😁
I contacted Bachmann to tell them to make some OO9 starter sets. I really hope they do. I can see the potential in this scale.
Awesome! Can’t wait to see it finished! Thank you! 🚂
Another great video - the two of you work very well together in the videos and it comes across as relaxed and friendly. It was useful to see Mike's techniques for the build, and I can begin to see the attraction of the Fairlie - having initially dismissed it because it is narrow gauge. Richard's video of the real locomotive was really enjoyable too - some wonderful steam sounds in there. I'm looking forward to the second part. And, as with a number of others, I'd like to thank the Hornby Magazine crew for another superb year of magazine articles and reviews, not to mention the videos too. Have a happy Christmas and New Year.
Thanks Curlypawz, really pleased to hear you enjoy our content! 😁
Love that you guys are promoting small model shops.
Sending love from the US!
Good to see more of our holidayday in North Wales getting published :)
Slowly but surely 😁
Absolutely brilliant Mike and Richard can't wait for the next vid to pop up
Thanks Kole
Thank you so much, I'm building a 009 North Wales layout for my grand children and this has been a big help. I will search out part 2. God bless
Excellent little layout we use the same type of circular jig for making windows and stairs the models look amazing thankyou for the video
Great video Julian. Thanks for sharing!! Cheers Onno.
Great work Mike and Richard. A really useful video encouraging modellers to make the break into narra gauge, If I can be constructively critical for a moment, and having been brought up in Corris as a child, Welsh narrow gauge railways are very much not flat on an a piece of ply or MDF. I suspect Mike started off with the flat boards as a very quick start to the project, but it would probably have been more appropriate to design the depth under the trackbed / formation prior to decking the boards. This is primarily because the typical Welsh narrow gauge lines tend to climb hills and mountains with embankments and bridges under the track as much as cuttings above.
Having said that, a really nice job and you should be really pleased. The sky appears to be the limit for RTR 009 at the moment, and although the Beyer Garretts are large and complex machines, I really wouldn't be surprised to see an RTR product in the next couple of years. The Festiniog Fairlie will pave the way for many more products I am sure.
Really excited for this layout! Can't wait to see it completed.
Can't wait to reveal all
Absolutely love this, so inspiring :-)
I'm building an N gauge 1960s layout. I don't have that much space, so its only 8 x 2.5 ft. But when I saw Bachmann's Autumn release video, I HAD to have one of these double Fairlies *breathes in and out of brown paper bag*. Still not got much room, so I have got a 2x2 ft board and I'm going to see if I can make a tiny little first radius model. Mike mentioned he has something similar. I've got my inspiration from Peco's Your Guide to Narrow Gauge Railways. Fantastic to see you do a video on this.
Thanks Ed, glad you enjoyed it, let us know how you get on with your 2x2.
cracking video gents, cant wait to see the next video :D
All the best
Matt :)
Thanks Matt!
This is so cool! When I was a lad it was on the kitchen table until my mum made me take to down before tea!
Ha the best memories!
Excellent video guys, if I was going to model in 009 I would love a couple of Tallylyn Locomotives
Fantastic video. I've never liked 009. In fact, I probably hated it. But I was glued to this. It was fun, and engaging and every minute was just plain good. Lovely stuff. More of this impromptu layout building, it's just great viewing.
Really pleased you enjoyed it! 😆
Great video lads, really enjoyed everything about it, including the platform blooper ;)
Ha the best railways are made on the back of mistakes!
fantastic video, best ever. thank you
Thanks Andy!
Loved this please keep them coming
Will do! 😁
Nice one like the video very much. Hope there more to come.
Brilliant video as ever gents. everytime you do a video on 009 makes it even more tempting to make a 009 gauge layout, especially for exhibitions use. And I said I was going to stick to my 00 gauge collecting. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses in the next video, and eagerly awaiting to see how you'll be getting the slate feel on the hillside. Keep up the great work as ever gents and if we don't speak before, I hope all the team have a merry Christmas and a happy new year
Cheers
James
Thanks James as always, same you you although we may have a couple of surprises lined up... 😉
It's nice to look at.
Hello looking great ! 👍🏼
Thanks!
Great to watch a guy who knows what he's doing!
Mike's doing well too 😅
@@hornbymag Good man!
Nice, a second series! Can’t wait for episode 2
Not long now 😊
Thanks for doing a 009 layout! Cheers!
Thanks for tuning in!
I love it!!
Excellent video, really enjoyed it, think I may need to do some remodelling on my layout.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
The 'stick with holes in' is actually called a Trammel, As somebody else from NZ mentioned , Josephine, a NZR 3'6" gauge loco is preserved in the Dunedin Early Settlers Museum, close by the iconic Dunedin Railway Station. She spent many years rusting away outside, before being put in a building with a glass wall to allow the public to see her. Arthur
Thanks Arthur
Ganz hervorragend gestaltete Nebenbahnanlage.
I have a small OO9 track as part of my OO layout and I have to agree with Mike about the tight radii. I ended up using set track on the tightest parts as I was afraid of bending the flexitrack that much and causing the problems he describes. Great video,
Thanks Davie!
Very enjoyable video, especially the blend of layout building and visits to the real thing!
Thanks John!
Superb gentlemen , it’s going to be amazing, please let me be one of the first 😂to wish you both Mike and Richard a merry Christmas and a very happy new year ,here’s to more modelling in 22 ,all the best Mark 😊🎅🏼👍🏻🧑🎄🤶🏻
Thanks Mark, same to you
I kinda like it. Apart from One massive problem. Since when was Wales Flat! I'd raise the main line by a couple of inches and use hieght and gradients. Adds to interest. K👍😉🚂🚂🚂🚂
Thanks for doing this video I am currently looking at layout idea's for a narrow gauge layout as I am looking at something reasonably compact with sidings, station and suitable for running most of the ready to run 009 gauge loco's that have come out or are coming out.
Enjoyed that!
Praise from ceaser 🤣
@@hornbymag 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good stuff
Thanks!
I never liked the Double Fairlie's, but then my father never liked firing them back in the 60's. His favourite was Blanche, and then Prince (as a kid I had my first footplate rides on them). When Bachmann produce models of them I will be among the first to get them (and Prince should be in green as he was in the 60's).
Nice to see how a small layout can be built.
Easy peasy
@@hornbymag Easy peasy, lemon squeeze!
Actually the model of the Double Fairlie looks really good and your layout does capture the feel of the Ffestiniog railway, but I really want to see a 009 model of Blanche.
Double Fairlies are awesome
Oh yes! 😁
Very inspiring looks a need engine on Santa's list.
we have 1 of these double fairlie loco's here in Dunedin New Zealand. Its in a museum for all to see.
Very nice!
LOVE IT :):)
Great stuff
Great ideas the run in to Christmas
Santa's list growing? 😅
Excellent work! Can you tell me what you used for the ground cover of the slate mine area please? You said you didn't want to grass it but didn't say what you used.
Richard, I was waiting for you say, "What happened to the Platforms, Mike? I have to say that mike is very creative when it comes to making a layout. The ignoring thing is he makes it look so easy. Bachmann, see what you have started. Hornby take note. Martin. (Thailand)
Its a sign of a great model if you're left wanting to built a layout. 😅
Great Video I ordered a Fairlie didn’t arrive yet here in USA. I’m planning on adding a loop of 009 track around the scenic hill on one end of my existing 00 layout. Can I ask which Peco Track you used? Thanks
Its Peco code 80 track 😊
Hope you do some slate forms on your layout and a slate mine
Wonderful 009 layout! But I still have one question, how did you ballast the switches without them getting stuck by the glue to fix the ballast?
As Lapis said before, right hand running on the Ffestiniog… something to do with Tan y Bwlch and relative curve radius and sightingI think. Great layout, I’m looking forward to the rest.
Thanks Tom!
Great stuff, what size vehicles to go with this guage?
Not dissimilar to the HOe track I have incorporated into my HO layout. Partly to bring logging trains down to the Sawmill/pallet factory (great kitßby Faller & Vollmer) and partly to replicate the Zillertalbahn railway down in Austria which have some lovely loco liveries. You hv some great scenery opportunities with 009/HOe too 🤗
Sounds great!
A word of wisdom to the wise, cutting foam with a hot wire cutter gives off toxic fumes - keep well ventilated and/or wear a mask etc.
On a more positive note, delightful engine, superb running qualities. Love the layout and the pragmatic nature of it all too, the buildings are charming. Great video fellas, seems like you can turn your hand to anything 👍😊 Which one of you played guitar on the overdubbed instrumental music?🤔🤔🤔😄😄👍🎸🪕🎸
Looking good. It's surprising how quickly you stop noticing it's just a tabletop layout with completely flat track. But what was the disaster with the platforms? The plaster looked like it was doing what it's supposed to. Or was the disaster just impatience, ripping up the edging before the plaster had set?
I knew going into this I was going to regret watching it.... Another case of a model needing a layout right here lol
Guys, can you use eye protection when using a rotary cutting tool. It doesn't take much to break one of those cutting disks and it happens in an instant. I've even had one break a light globe when it failed - your eyes don't get a second chance.
Top tip!
Thanks for making this video,it’s made my mind up to build a small layout in 009. I’m from NZ,I will order the points from the UK,do I order code 80 and what track joiners do I order. Are they the same as 00 gauge,if you can help me with theses two questions I would appreciate it.Really looking forward to the second video, thanks again David
Hi David, you will require Peco SL-310 rail joiners 😊
Hi Guys, Can you tell me which back copy's are required to cover the Ffestiniog layout, built for the double farlies ?I am changing over from the dark side to 009. I need inspiration . Very enjoyable video .
Hi Allan, Issues January HM175 (on sale now) and the next issue Febuary HM176 will cover this build in full. You can grab a copy with free delivery here: shop.keypublishing.com/issue/View/issue/HM0175/hornby-magazine-january-2022
Gents, what do you use to weather the track? I seem to remember Mike mentions it somewhere in this video, but for the life of me, I can't find it again on the video. Thank you Andy
Humbrol spray, number 29 if memory serves :D
@@hornbymag Thank you guys!
What track parts were used in this video please points flexy track and buildings would be helpful thanks.
Superb. Enough said..lol..
Thanks Alan!
all we need is for hornby or bachmann to do a 00 scale of the RHDR
Wish I was as good as these two
Can OO9 handle tighter radius bends and therefore more for the size of baseboard?
Yes exactly that 😊
Hi guys. Really enjoyed the video. Just a quick question, if I was to model the station in Blaenau Ffestiniog, which has the standard gauge and narrow gauge, is the 009 scale and 00 the right combination?
Bingo, you're dead right! 😊
@@hornbymag you think it's worth doing then 😍
@@S27DRJ always worth doing it'll be great fun!
@@hornbymag thanks 👍
Must get one even if she sits on a wagon as a load on OO!
would it look out of place if i was to put 009 a long side my oo gauge on the same base board ? great video
Not at all, the real things took slate down to standard gauge railways :)
@@hornbymag thanks for the reply i no what to ask for for Christmas. have great Christmas and a happy new year to you all at hornby magazine
@@simonsnow7771 thanks same to you
Can i ask an unusual question and can you tell me the music you used for your video in between? Its one of my favourite genre music i enjoy?
Where did the bogies attach to the frame? Middle, front or the back?
I love this idea! Gives me a idea to try and build one here in California.
Oh does anyone make the Garratt locomotives?
Do they have the Single Fairlie in Hornby?
Not in Hornby, who knows what Bachmann will do next..
Great video as always, ive never been so inspired to go narrow gauge.... also can you tell me where i can get the main music you guys used for the video please?
Music is by The Undertowns and Hunter Quinn. 😊
@@hornbymag sorry the last track on the video please again sorry but that music is great
@@corpusmetal1 czcams.com/video/3wE8zJv-U2A/video.html
@@hornbymag thankyou so much :)
@@corpusmetal1 my pleasure.
What hot wire cutter do you use guys????
One from Amazon, nice and cheap
🤗👍👏
How much would this cost to build or did I miss the price?
How do I find 009 curve track, all I get are like N scale, 027, etc😢
Our track is laid using Peco OO9 flexible track, but they do make sectional track as well. It should be available from Peco stockists.
Will you do a video on the n gauge society Hunslet 0-6-0
If one arrives with us I think we'll have too 😊
Out of interest, what's the length of the platforms in the station?
does that work for 18 inch curves.
Yes indeed
Hi, will we get to see the second video without subscribing to key model world?
Thanks
Yes, in february, Subscribers get to see it early on Key Model World :)
Looks great. I'd be tempted, if 009 wasn't so expensive. Why is an 009 double fairlie more expensive than an 0 gauge jinty? Why are 009 coaches around the same price as 0 gauge parkside wagon kits?
One thing that annoys me, you're running the fairlie as left hand running, but the ffesty is right hand running...
Well spotted, will remember for next time 😅 prices wise thats a question for the manufacturer
@@hornbymag it seems you didn’t remember… and with the ground signals wired in it looks like you’re wedded to wrong line running.
@@tomlee9534 wait for the next episode 😉
I would love to have a 009 gauge layout but everythings to expensive.
Keeps us going to work!
Being American what scale is 009 in the US?
The US equivalent would be HOn30
