I often use the Lydian chord as a substitute for C Major. I also use the Bb chord (Csus) as a substitute for C minor.

"Temptation Eyes" by The Grass Roots uses the Lydian in the chorus. Gives a feeling of uncertainty and anticipation.

Tony, you always provide so much useful information. For me, self-taught without any theory background, it's sometimes like drinking from a fire hydrant, but with repeated views, I learn so much. I'm going to try Ave Verum. Thanks. P.S. Glad to see from other comments, it was your mic and not my new expensive earphones that cut out.

I'm going to try to apply this to the new song I'm writing - see if I can capture that sentiment.

A great tutorial- a single note is easy to recall #4 or b5- so minor b3 is sad and b5 is kinda sad too- I guess it hints at diminished chord partially-we could coin the term "Quarter diminished"

Thanks tony. I was never trained on different modes , so i'm getting a lot out of your explanation and hope to learn more about them.

Thanks for including Ave Verum. It’s part of the choral repertoire where I sing bass (in addition to separate jazz piano lessons). I’ve been told and could tell it’s a true masterpiece, and now I have a much better understanding why! Also glad you chose it to expose it to your audience here as well. It’s something more people should hear…
    Thanks again

yea thats a kind of cool thing to play with.... someone, I think Frank Gambale showed about taking the 145 and giving them a pedal tone from each of the scale tones and he would call that a mode. I would always think of that Petty song when playing that 4 as the pedal.... I have heard of a girl named Lydia..... Haha.... Btw : Frank Gambale Clinic - Reliable Music - Charlotte, NC

Tony, nice examples of the Lydian mode. Gonna check out that Mozart piece myself. BTW, your mic cut out for about 11 seconds at 12:12.

Hey Tony, slightly lesser-known one for you but just wondering if you could do a lesson ‘Rio’ by Joao Donato - it’s a kind of samba/bossa nova/ jazz mix. I can’t seem to find a chart for it but I’ve been listening to it recently and would love to be able to play the piano part if you could figure it out. Thanks!
