After several weeks of watching this channel, I assembled a "pack" for myself and decided to try an overnight. My son in law has 22 acres with a little patch of woods on the rear of the property, located in Central Kentucky. I arrived around noon, trekked about 1/2 mile back and found a place to set up camp. After setting up my lean to, using "Quick Deploy Ridge Line", I built my wind screen by cutting seven or eight trees. It wasn't exactly what Corporal Kelly would call "Excellent" or Good to go", but it wasn't bad for my first time. The leaves were to wet to used my trash bags as Grouse bags, so I just laid my sleeping bag on top of them. I then started about the task of gathering firewood.
My son in law arrived about 4:30 pm. We set up his tarp as a lean to. Once again, using the QPRL. Since I am out of shape and the tree cutting and hauling wore me out, I let him collect the rest of the firewood. I will spare the details of the meal. (No Bacon, though) We were warm for most of the evening until it got to 27 degrees and most of the firewood was gone. (Hint: we you think you have enough go get the same amount or more). I was fine in my Ol School Coleman, but Cody just had a bag that was rated for 50 degrees or so. Poor guy nearly froze to death and was up all night stoking the fire, which was fine with me because there were some coyotes just across the creek.
MY only request is for a video showing how to set up for two people. We had our lean to's facing each other and the wind screen running perpendicular between us at out heads.
All in all, I had a great time and didn't fare too badly for an out of shape, overweight 62 year old. I did find out I NEED a good, lightweight sleeping bag, a sleeping pad and more comfortable boots. (I wore my slip on Cowboy Boots). Thank you Corporal Kelly for you inspiring videos. I will definitely be going back out again. Maybe with some Bacon.

As an audio engineer, I can tell you, that the audio mixing/sound quality in this video was amazing. Almost ASMR level of detail, tone, etc. The older 30+ minute videos, and the longer commentary and shooting the sh$t, the more formal/detailed descriptions and thorough breakdowns of your actions, I really enjoy those things. Thanks for many years of great content. My daughter and I love watching you, she has grown up with you as a role model. Wishing you the best Corporal.

It pays to have watched many of your earlier videos because you do an outstanding job of showing the techniques you’ve been teaching all along the way. Choosing a site, hanging your bag, the three prong rake, clearing your site, setting the ridgeline with a timber and truckers hitch, pulling the tarp right with prussiks, staking the tarp and sealing with leaves... and on and on. Constantly using the skills you teach.
When you first raked up the leaves I thot you were going to stuff them in one of those heavy duty plastic bags you’ve used before and make a mattress. In the morning when you woke up, I could hear the “rough night” in your voice. Dead tired but can’t get comfortable... I hate those nights. Daybreak can’t get there quickly enough.

Put used bag in camp fire or bury - actually good for the soil. SECOND fave: General Foods flavored instant - various flavors, pre-sweetened, etc. and comes in single serving like your Tasters Choice (or at least it used to). Great vid - I’ve never tried a wind screen like you built - thanks for the hint and the camp recipe. Ray, near Durango.

I used to crave my “candy coffee” full of sugar and creamer. But lately I learned to enjoy it “hot, strong, and black”. My solution to camping coffee is Turkish coffee. It’s super fine ground coffee beans. you just simmer a heaping tablespoon in some water until it foams up. Let the fine grounds settle and pour into a cup (or sip carefully to not stir up the grounds). Could be done in your empty bean cans so no special equipment needed!

Well it says the comment did not go through, but to this old 7th Fleet sailor, the best way out of your predicament is to use REAL coffee. One Tablespoon per two cups or one mug. You can either cook the coffee in your canteen and filter it through a sheet of a paper towel into your mug, or just make the paper towel into a little pocket over your mug, put the coffee in the middle and pour hot water from your canteen over it.
Either way real coffee this way is ten time better than instant any way - and this is coming from a former forward deployed steaming, screaming E5 Gunners Mate who runs exclusively on high octane black coffee.

For coffee. You can carry a second water bottle filled with coffee from the house then reheat it over the fire. Sure, it takes up more room and weighs a lot more than instant coffee packs but you have to decide just how much you like your coffee. 32 ounces will give you 3 to 5 cups of coffee ( sorta depends on your definition of "Cup"). Or you can go smaller on the bottle. Plus, I learned long ago a plain and simple truth. Cold coffee is a whole lot better than NO coffee, if for some reason you don't have time or luxury of a fire.Itseems like I remember that, I think it was Folgers, had coffee grounds in bags, like tea bags, at one time. If you can find them, boil the water, throw in the bag (or 2), let it steep for a bit, pull out the bag and you're good to go. When you're done, split the bags, scatter the grounds and throw the bag, tag and string on the fire. You can also use this method and several bags for refilling the second bottle if/when the opportunity presents itself over extended periods. Then there is Cowboy coffee. . . Personally, I don't care for chewable coffee. And most times, it will be.Thanks for the videos, Take care.

Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee is really good. A lot better than the Folgers or Maxwell House instant coffee. I took a bunch of it out to Arizona when it first came out. I think you can still get it at Target or Walmart. Think they have about 4 different types of roasts to choose from.

Life’s too short to drink Instant Coffee, or eat Frozen Pizza. That being said survival would be different. I did use the Folgers coffee bags back in the early 90’s, when the coffee mess at work, became infested with cockroaches. They weren’t bad, but it’s been over 25 years, and I might’ve still occasionally used those first flavored powdered creamers at the time, they were new on the market then. Now I only drink coffee as black as my heart, because Dad always said “son you need too learn to drink your coffee black, because some day you will be in a place where you will be lucky too have Black Coffee” . So a not long after he passed, there I was working I a prison with a roach infested coffee mess 🤣

If you're willing to experiment... Use an auto drip coffee, and the filters, with a stapler to make "Tea Bags". You have to adjust how much coffee in each filter, and how many filters you will use to make each portion. Ziplock bags keep them fresh, so to speak. Good luck, and yes there is nothing like a Percolator. Have a good day
