How the hell can a culture I'm not a part of make me feel emotions about the ceremony that I don't understand ... awesome
samr buddy
It's part of being human. It taps into your primal being. You don't have to be in the culture to understand it.
Brought to tears
I mean the haka is both a war dance and a ceremonial dance. I remember seeing a translated version of this same video and the actual words the men and women are saying at something to the affect of “don’t carry your burdens alone anymore, share them with us since you are joining our family”
Plus the haka runs off of pure energy that humans have held onto since the beginning of our species that we should tap into a little more honestly. If traditions like this can affect us this much, why not conduct them more often and document it for others to see?
I feel emotional too
Everybody gangsta til these mf’s start hitting the Haka at you

If you cried at this, you are probably someone who values honor and loyalty, and that is the energy I feel in this presentation
Hell yeah I do. I'm at work, and still felt the feels, even without sound. Man... Powerful!
Why crying to something I don't understand . May be you cry because she did

Seeing the bride pour her heart in, next to the groom. Was one of the best things I've ever seen in my life.
Couldn’t agree more. She had 100% whilst holding back tears. Powerful stuff
WOW !!!
LOVE her reaction, especially when she joins in!
This must be what home, family and security feels like.
orion 2250 That’s exactly what this is. Having tradtions and being able to do them with your family and having a connection to your ancestors is an incredible luxury.
I intend in no way to discriminate other lifestyles. Am merely pointing out something that i feel lucky to have.
Something America don't have, lol
Yes my Friend this is LOYALTY
Gaslit for Life
As do I sadly our connection to our past was stolen
If we only understood on a global scale our connection to one another, how we are all just really distant cousins.(earth family with amnezia is what we've been for a long time, let's re-remember). The Big Government and Global Elite would have big problems if We all just saw what I am seeing.
The name of the haka is Tika Tonu (translation, "What's right is always right.)" It is not a war or battle haka as so often mentioned in the comments. It usually used to mark a right of passage e.g. boyhood to adulthood, graduation or in this case a wedding. This haka is performed by the groom's side of the family welcoming the bride into their midst and expressing their unconditional support for the couple.
that's beautiful.
If we only had more of this
this is so powerful
Thanks for sharing
Cheers for that mate.
I didn't understand a word; I didn't understand the gestures they were showing. But I broke into tears and couldn't control myself. There's something magical about it...

If your bride tells you: at our wedding my family will do a war cry in your face and you have to respond to them with your own war cry, and you agree. She knows she found the right man.
This was a surprise to the bride from her fiance and family
That’s his boys.
@@keoki90232 Looks like it's both
This is not a war cry, in the traditional sense. You wouldn't cry to your enemies *be true to yourself my son* it's a ballad from a father to a son, or in this case, from a father in law to his son in law.
If he also grew up in New Zealand, he'd be very familiar with the Haka.
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all week. Much respect.
I don't know why this haka makes me cry and I've seen it so many times. So emotional.
Her husband looks innocent until he joins in and does the HAKA. Pure Quality
For me its the bride going from overwhelmed at 1:02 to warrior queen at 2:05, awesome.

They're challenging him and he accepted

This Haka is called Tika Tonu. It is a Maori haka and was written in the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1914 by a chief named Waimarama Puhara. He wrote it for his son and it is about the transition from boy to man.
+Josh Starks Thank you! Such a clear and complete description. This haka is beautiful.
Ohh so relatively recent (in the grand scheme of things) I was always under the impression they were centuries old. Thanks for the knowledge :)
That is so awesome! Now I understand why it was so emotional. Thank you for sharing the meaning! :)

When the Bride and Groom respond to the Haka , this is called": Returning the Haka". It is considered good manners, and means: "I have heard your words, and will pay heed to them".

Ive watched several Haka videos now, the absolute intensity of their expressions are incredible. After they finish, there must he a recovery period to adjust back to "normal". This takes your breathe away. All the videos have the exact same intensity and displays of emotion, from the young MP to this wedding ceremony. This couple will never forget that day.
All their eyes express a "rage" that is scary. Especially the female participants

That part got me too. Makes me want to learn more about my own heritage, the new generation needs to persevere our traditions, every culture has stuff like this, we just need to get in touch with our history as individuals and bring it out in ourselves.
I love how they couldn't just watch. They had to jump in.
That's part of Haka. It's quite possibly the most beautiful part of Haka-- joining in essentially tells the participants, "I hear you, and I will not turn away from your words." I heckin' love Hakas.
If you watch closely they only focus on the better performers

That's my take too. So much love.
i'm Aboriginal and it kills me that my ancestors culture wasn't preserved like this.
I'm absolutely in awe of the Maori culture and this was so touching to watch.
exohexoh thank the Brits for that.
exohexoh
What stops you to renew the Aboriginal culture, but for your own people, not as a tourist attraction.
In my town, the white man isn't stopping Aboriginals from expressing their culture. In fact, we have laws to protect it, and we spend a ton of white people's tax money to place Aboriginal symbolism all over the town, but the Aboriginals enjoy Subway sandwiches and alcohol too much to care. Turns out modern white man is the only ones trying to protect your own culture from yourselves abandoning it.
Areus White It really makes me sad, especially for the aboriginal people who are trying to spread their culture, when some aboriginals just don't care at all. I'd really like to see the Australian sports teams do the aboriginal war dances before games and for normal Aussies to do it at everyday celebrations like weddings, funerals and birthdays like Kiwis do with the Haka. It would help Australians understand the aboriginal culture and it could intimidate other teams and it would make the start of Australia New Zealand games absolutely mind blowing. I don't see anything wrong with that.
exohexoh its very sad.... an nzder living in aus i think it's sad how the aboriginal culture isnt as embraced as it shld be.. it shld be something that should be accumulated into the educational system. .idk maybe im wrong. But ya know what i mean?
Idk what special thing it harbours in itself that whenever i see someone do it, i tear up
simon says urin real vibe killer
Using your primal feelings to express deep emotions is a really unique way to tell someone you care about them.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
This was already amazing in the first half, but the bride and groom joining in took it to another level.
If I'm not mistaken, the Tika Tonu Haka is seen as a gift, from the family to the groom and the bride. And, basically, since it talks about being ready to face your adult life, when you join the Haka it does not only mean you're showing you're ready to face your life from now on, but youre returning the Haka as well, basically making a gift to your family. It's complicated, I know, but once I saw a video about this particular form of Haka and all this things was explained this way...I just hope I did not say anything wrong or stupid

Haka literally translates to breathing fire, ha = breath or exhaling ka = fire. Haka is to speak with intensity and purpose which can be used in a lot of different ways. It is often emphasised with action as well, sometimes without. While performed before wartime’s being apart of it, it can also be celebratory, supportive (haka tautoko) etc Haka is not one thing with one meaning, think of it more as a genre or conduit of expression. I have seen someone propose with Haka spontaneously composed on the spot. Haka is performed as loved ones are buried, as babies are welcomed into homes and in this case at a wedding.
If you are interested in the origins of this specific Haka it is called Tika Tonu. A quick summary of its translation is a father telling his son that he has all the strength and resources within himself to overcome the obstacles he is facing in life now and in the future. If he is worried or concerned to look inside himself for the answers.
The concluding story of the father and son bought me to tears (in a positive way).. Thank you.
Thank you!
May 2021 be good to you and yours.

Just wanna ask, are the words and movements different for each occasion or the same?
@@Si_nengatcha yes and no... my family have a haka that has been passed down from generation to generation that we use for multiple occasions.. weddings, birthdays, funerals etc it is composed as a battle haka but we use it for different things.
Then there are specific haka for example a very popular powhiri haka named “te waka” is used for welcoming people which we also perform. Again although the actions and words of this haka are quite specific in their meaning this isn’ to say other people don’t use it for other things, I have heard it performed as a relative was carried to be buried.
Thank you very much for the explanation.
The energy from this is awesome . Respect . Love the Māori culture and the youngsters who are keeping it alive. ❤
This is absolutely awesome
As an American and knowing nothing of the Maori people. Watching the haka...i cant help but feel it stir something deep. Something feral and raw, pure emotion of spirit, ancient and foreign, but familiar. I have never bore witness to something more true, I need not know what it means to hear its reminder of who I am. May the Maori people live a thousand years, and may they live a thousand more after that.
Realist comment i think i have ever seen on CZcams.
The main feature of NZ society is its inclusion. The anglo population are taught all about Maori culture and history. Its part of their hertiage and is fiercely defended. I am an Australian and I married into a large NZ family. They saw it as their duty to teach me all about the Maori as well. Even after our marriage ended, the NZ side offered me support and I feel protected. Its amazing.

"So son, although it may be difficult for you, and son, although it seems to be unyielding, no matter how long you reflect on it,"
"The answer to the problem..."
"Is here inside of you..."
"INDEED!!"
"INDEED!!!"
"YES, INDEED!!!!!"

Crying to this? Really?
@@Nobodybutme898 Yes? It made me teary eyed. The emotions on their faces and in their voices are beautiful and it was clearly a special moment to them. I thought so anyway. 🤷🏽♀️
@@MTatere Wow! Thanks for this!
me too
I can't stop watching . The energy and power coming from this just like hijacks my emotions, wraps around my spirit and lifts it up. It speaks to a part of me that is deeply seated and rarely acknowledged or touched by anything. There's much to be thankful for being an American, but our culture is so empty, weak, inauthentic, manufactured and McDonaldized. We're so divided and distant from each other. Look at the men... all different ethnicities yet they stand completely solidified. The love is so beautiful and overwhelming.
+Mia Mendez You have expressed exactly what I feel but could not articulate.
+Kate B :)
👏👏
+Mia Mendez Exactly what I thought, you said it perfectly, it's so beautiful, all that energy, I would love to go to New Zealand to learn the meaning behind all those words and to learn all of this, fan-tastic.
If you haven't already. Watch "Haka documentary beats by Dre " and there is a video of this "Wedding Haka "with subtitles.
absolutely respect you

They had a huge haka with all the guests at my friends funeral (19 y/o) and everyone was so passionate and emotional, then his mother and grandparents joined in and tears started falling but it just got even more intense. There was a good 60 of them at once, if my friend was there to see it he would be red as a beet seeing how much he is loved and missed
Even as a bystander without any connection to the Maori culture, it would have made me cry on the spot.
He saw it!
THEY DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS THE MOST EVIL THING THAT CAN BE DONE. OPEN YOUR EYES. THEY ARE DOING NAZI AND ALBANIAN SALUTES. WHO IS DO YOU THINK WHO CONQUERED THOSE ISLANDS FULL OF SEA GOLD? AND BRAINWASHED MIXED BROWN WARRIORS TO DEFEND A WHITE DYNASTY. ALL BIBLES SPECIFICALLY TELL YOU TO NOT STICK OUT YOUR TONGUE AND MAKE FACES LIKE THIS.
И во время похорон это делают??? Я отлично понимаю , для чего это делается перед боем, но не понимаю, зачем это на похоронах и на свадьбе. Ммм, может быть были приняты жертвоприношения в такие дни? Подскажите?
Pagan rituals. Embarrasing. Whats next, eat the dead
I'm sorry but some of these comments are a bit annoying, I'm from New Zealand and part Maori, I was raised in Maori culture to an extent not as much as I would've liked but the disrespectful comments that denounce our culture is pretty insulting, I know it's more lack of understanding but the Haka is tradition and I've grown up both watching the Haka and performing the Haka at celebrations, weddings etc You may not understand it but a little respect for another culture would be appreciated.
Preach!
I still get choked up whenever I see this. I'm only of Scottish ancestry and we don't exactly have anything of this nature that is so wonderful and amazing.
We mostly drink and make fun of the English. 😊
I am from the States and understand exactly what you're saying. I'm in your corner and will fight with you to hold those accountable for being disrespectful to your traditions. I am a Warrior myself, and when I watch the haka performed, I feel that warrior spirit in my soul.
Well said. You should be so proud of your culture and the amazing traditions they have. I’ve also heard you are the most inclusive of the worlds natives. You will let whites do the Haka if it’s done with respect. This is how it should be. Take care
Veteran Motors of course colour has never been an issue, there are plenty of white maoris as they are part European but even then its part of our culture to be inclusive to those willing to learn regardless of colour or race :) Thank you for your kind words
Do not pay attention to condemnations. Some just do not understand. It is, actually, amazing and cool tradition. If I was among guests at this wedding, I, was proud to participate. From Russia with love =)
From India, salute to everyone and Belated wishes to you guys 🫶
This took me through all the stages of world history class…
