This is a veritable treasure from the Sonet archives - the legendary Benny Carter playing an informal, hugely swinging session with an all-star group: Nat Adderley on trumpet, Red Norvo on vibraphone, Horace Parlan on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Ronnie Gardiner on drums.
This video presents the King at his superlative best., Benny Carter leads this lively sexxted though a memorable programme of standards from the Great American Songbook plus the jazz classics Work Song (which features Adderley singing the song for the very first time on record) and Lover Man.
The musicians on the session are clearly inspired by Benny’s leadership. And brilliant musicianship. The great trombonist, J.J. Johnson once said of Benny Carter.
“He is one of the greatest musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. The whole time I was in Benny’s band, it was one continuous education in music.”
Educational, inspirational and unfailingly tasteful -that was Benny Carter.

Benny was 77 years young when he led this superlative performance in Stockholm.
And still in his prime! Thank you Gazell/Sonet for capturing this legend on camera.

Born in 1907. He saw all the jazz history (and contributed himself a great deal of it too) and here he is, still diggin g thoroughly at teanmates solos, and having fun. That ending of Stockholm Riff, pure Joy!
Wow, I didn't know that Nat sung his own inmortal tune too!

I believe that was the last time Benny Carter was in Stockholm. I wanted to go but it was sold out. There was the chance of joining Benny and the band on a cruise, which would have been wonderful. But it was a bit expensive for a young student, so I passed. My mistake.
