You know, the more I listen to many of Monk's recordings, the more I appreciate the symbiosis between Monk and tenor sax Charlie Rouse, who to me is one of the most underrated musicians of the bebop era and beyond. And Butch Warren on bass with Ben Riley here, they too deserve great credit. You don't get people to play with Monk who don't have their stuff together. I realize that here, they're in Paris doing a festival, and a lot of old favorites, but that soul connection between Monk & Rouse still stands out to me. They go back, brothers & sisters! And bless them and their enormous talents-- They bring us forward!

One night at the Five Spot, Thelonious seemed to be in one of his moods, would play a few bars, walk off the stage, let the others carry the rest of the song; come back for next piece, same thing - right through each set. And, do not think any of us were disappointed - because his guys handled everything so well, right up to standard. We all loved Monk not just for the notes he played, but for himself, something about his stance in life; & his players likewise. All good, original & unified.

I grew up listening to Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillispie, Charles Mingus, Theo Monk, John Coltrane Sonny Rollins, Bob Willis etc. At the time I just took it that as my dad's music. later I came to appreciate the music my father had turned me onto.

A fella on here commented on how Monk can make you dance. All that talk about technique and how he had bad technique, etc. This is a choice live recording of his best band. His Columbia recordings, except for Monk (8 or so in all) are all complete masterpieces. Monk is worth owning, but don't start on that one. They don't get the credit they deserve. Monk took time to seep into my bones. His music first struck me as simple, then a tune here and there on the album I first bought, CrissCross, started registering to me. Got catchy. Then over several listens, the whole album lit me up. Every moment of the album became a whole deep enjoyment. Each album did the same thing the same way. Mingus said he had the best meter of anyone. What he is doing then, is swinging. He swings using timing, and he swings by adding the perfect tonal touches at the right time. He also brought a childlike enthusiasm into his music that was and still is not matched by anyone else; the joy is inescapable. Third, he often began his studio tunes with these beautiful stride pieces that brought the band in at a time that couldn't happen more appropriately. He built tension on the intro that was so tight, and then the band would come in and the tune is elevated at that moment to a chemical reaction. He had his perfect band during those years, and he had worked out every detail of his songs, many of which were already in is repertoire for many years. Lastly, he brought you to city as he knew it. You can hear the city, streetcars, on several great tunes. That also is some of the enthusiasm I'm talking about. Altogether, nobody swung as hard as Monk. He will always be the top. Nobody can make me dance like Monk. Check out those Columbia recordings.

i laugh when i hear people say Monk lacked technique. Not even Tatum, Peterson, Bud, Jarrett, Corea had better technique when it came to rhythmic effectiveness, within the scope of their own musical vocabulary. Monk invented his own lines, completely changed the jazz piano approach to comping, had his own technique and he executed flawlessly, live, made us DANCE. Play me even once, the descending whole tone lines as crystal clear/in the pocket, go ahead homie. make me dance.

I think it was Coltrane who said that if you ever lost your place in one of Monk's complex structures, it was like falling down an elevator shaft. You had a hell of a time getting back in.

I'm struck by how the other players meld so seamlessly into Monk's style, temperament and energy. It's amazing that even though every bit of his genius is evident in his solo piano work, the musical impact can be enhanced so well by the ensemble. What's been documented here is a treasure to marvel over for ages to come!

Americas most original composer/ musician, certainly jazz wise, and that's playing it safe of the last 75 years. There is only, and will ever be one=ly one Monk.Strangely enough I like hearing other people play Round Midnight better than the man himself. The rest of the canon - One of kind.

I've been listening mostly to hard bop for years and recently revisiting Monk (who I wasn't keen on earlier).
I'm glad I gave his music a second chance, as his writing is very original and has a much different feel than many of his contemporaries. I feel like such artists deserve a second or third chance if you don't immediately enjoy their music. The payoff is wonderful - this album swings and also has introspective moments that I also enjoy. Superb music - American Classical.
