  • Is describing Eritrea as the "North Korea of Africa" fair? Fair to North Korea, that is? The Eritrean people fought for their freedom for decades, but under the leadership of Isaias Afwerki, they have only been repaid with impoverishment, degradation, and enslavement.

    It's so sad to see such a thing happen to any country, especially Eritrea! Their unique location, culture, architecture (e.g. Massawa) really make it a gem. Wish the people of Eritrea the best

      North Korea is utterly horrible. I hope no one thinks we are saying otherwise. But I don't think it deserves to be seen as some sort of uniquely terrible place. There is at least one other country that is arguably worse.

    I spent 3 weeks in Eritrea in 2019. It's actually insane how scared the population of the country are to speak about what is going on in the country.
    I was definitely toeing the line where I could have gotten myself in trouble. The government control over all facets of life is wild.
    I met members of the Eritrean diaspora who were jailed for 3 years when visiting family for simply going to the funeral of a suspected anti-government activist.

    Thanks for another video, interesting to hear about your experience of immediate post independence Eritrea and what a contrast it is to now. I know an old man who has traveled to many countries and he told me that Eritrea was hands-down the very worst country he had ever been to. When he got to the airport the man who needed to sign off on an important document had already gone home and then the old man and his friend were detained in the police station by day, hotel by night for three days for having incorrect paperwork before being fined and put on the next plane back to Ethiopia.

      Crikey, what an ordeal! I had no problems whatsoever during my stay in Eritrea. I had to get a visa in advance, but that was it, and the border guards were friendly and efficient (I crossed by land). But from what I've seen more recently it's a much harder place to travel around in now. It's a shame because it is honestly a fantastic country. Glad you liked the video!

    Another fantastic video Fredo. (Beat me to it! :-) I had been planning to cover this for ages.) It is such an interesting case. And it is great that you have brought out the tragic failure of the country. I remember when it became independent. There was indeed such hope. I knew a number of academics who were training up its diplomats. It is so sad to see the way it has become so isolated.

    • @FredoRockwell
      @FredoRockwell  Před rokem

      Thank you! I'm sure yours will be much better! The real tragedy of Eritrea in my opinion is that the EPLF/PFDJ has never been able to end the wartime footing. They'd rather stay destroy their country with excessive control than let its people live a normal life. It's such a tragic waste.

      @@FredoRockwell Still avoiding the elephant in the room i see. Why has the international organisations and the arbitrators of peace failed their duty and let free the western allied nations to attack Eritrea and unfair sanctions based on no evidence. Eritrea will never kneel down to pack of lies and condemnation when it's right to peace isn't allowed. Failure to tell even the truth, this is the sad mindset that prevails many researchers and so called humans that lack any shred of humanity when an entire nations right to peace is refused. We deserve peace like everyone else in the world and fair treatment. Eritrea never provoked any conflict !

      @@bambooboobamb3335 The elephant in the room, in my opinion, is an unelected regime that's stayed in power for 30 years without even pretending to hold a national election. Without any democratic mandate whatsoever, the "rights" of the Eritrean government shouldn't be a priority. Instead, the priority should always be the rights of the Eritrean people. What do they want? With no democracy at all, there is no way to know.

      @@FredoRockwell no peace no war situation that Eritrea was dragged into never had any role in it, I see you cherry picking the story that fits your narrative. It isn't wrong to err but to keep treating a whole nation's struggle for peace as such is sad. Don't let the mainstream media views triumph over the truth that Eritrea was denied justice and forced to face sanctions based on no evidence. Try to give humanity a chance.
