I am all for Bill as a comedian and I think time will put him up there with the greats of all time. But I think this show is a bastion of discussion and to all the crew of Real Time and guest.. you guys are all true stars of modern humanity. Well done.

I almost wish that these segments would be part of the main episode. Some of the Overtime discussions are so insightful and interesting that it's a shame that more people don't watch them. Having five guests at once would definitely be a headache, but in this case I think this was some of the best material in the episode. Truly a very seasoned and intelligent panel and guests this week. If this Overtime discussion was five hours I probably would've watched the entire thing.
Still confused why the show is setup this way. Keep your first guest on for the whole show. Don't make them sit on the sidelines until you do overtime.

As a superintendent I listen to both the labor and management. Neither one likes him.

It happens during the week so they will have to ask for the day off.
And most of them can't afford that.
This country is already more liberal than it is conservative. but 1) liberals are lazy and don't vote. Bill is right in his new rules bit. Liberals are the first to screech and howl on Facebook and Twitter, but they don't show up to the voting booth where it matters. If mandatory voting was a thing, conservatives would rarely win. 2) Gerrymandering and 3) The electoral college is what allows small racist states to wield more power politically than California, the 5th largest economy in the world. Rural areas tend to be conservative and as your population density goes up, they tend to be more liberal. So it's just a matter of time before red stronghold states become purple or blue because their bigger population centers will be larger than the rural areas. 4) America is still very prejudiced against brown skinned people and women. Anytime someone of those categories runs for office, they've automatically got a disadvantage.

NIELS MICHIELS I see your point. Let me ask you this? How much do you really care? I am not accusing or attempting to call you out. I have heard a lot excuses for not voting. Yes excuses. The only real people with issues voting stand with the poor and minorities. Do you fall into one of those categories? If you do I do I sympathize. The rest of us just don't make time.
I can not wave a wand a make it easier to vote. I do understand the gerrymandering. Part of the gerrymandering process is disenfranchising people from voting. That means they won the fight. While it easy to point to items and say look what they have done. In reality the only way to win is to fight. Not with fists but power of the people. Starting in your own neighborhood School Board City Council state elected officials makes a much bigger difference in our lives day to day.
I early vote. I never vote in the primaries but I should. And I carry no party affiliation. But I vote in every god damb election.

I'm an Italian living in the German speaking part and working in the French speaking part of Switzerland. In my country 25% of the legal residents doesn't have a Swiss passport. 66% is either a first or a second generation immigrant from at least one parent (yes, a lot of Swiss are married to immigrants). The United States, at the moment reminds me very much of the Roman Empire. Think of it: Rome conquered the known ancient world, brought leadership, architecture and roads, wealth to the world. Other countries feared Rome, but they also respected it and wished to copy it. Roman culture spread throughout the ancient world.
After WWII, the United States picked up the leadership that Great Britain laid down, and brought leadership, technology, and wealth to the 20th century world. American culture was exported to the world and everyone wanted it. The American Empire reigned supreme.
But as all empires rise, they also fall. An empire can withstand attacks from outside for so long, but can they withstand the faults from within? When the Emperors figured out all they needed to silence their critics was bread and circuses, Romans didn’t pay attention to what the Emperors were doing - they had a full belly and entertainment. They were happy, and silent.
And that’s what the US has fallen into: the 2016 election wasn’t a thoughtful discussion of issues and how the US could become a better version of itself. If it ever existed, it is LONG gone. Particularly since there are no restrictions on finances. US elections are an auction between bidders. Let’s see who can buy whom!!

You are almost right. Maher, like so many thinking Americans on both sides, is beginning to gravitate to the attitude of DESPAIRING, not desperate.
When first elected, after the shock wore off, Maher and many others laughed Trump off and made side bets about whether he’d last 100 days. Eighteen months later the jokes have an edge of frustration and anger. Thanks to the capitulation of the GOP, Trump's administration is systematically dismantling America's education system, environmental and scientific institutions, and social services. The rich, both individual and corporate, have been freed from paying their fair share of taxes, with the result of a huge deficit in years to come and the establishment of an elite whose children will inherit the wealth that hard working Americans have created. Trump breaks faith with America's oldest allies and legitimizes the regimes of America's enemies, countries run by murderous thugs like Kim and Putin.
And yet, his popularity is actually going up, thanks in large part to the right wing media that has indoctrinated millions of uneducated rubes for decades, part of a carefully orchestrated and lavishly financed long-term plan.
We are nearing a crisis: if Trump holds congress in the 2018 mid-terms he will be validated among the financiers like the Kochs who initially opposed him, and the criminals who ran his campaign. Their fortunes will be even more closely tied to his, and the dismantling of democracy in this country, already well underway, will become the Administration's top priority. No wonder Maher is despairing. But desperate? Never.
