Don’t Put Your Address on Your Dog’s Collar

  • Every responsible dog owner puts a tag on their pet’s collar, but being careful about what information you inscribe on a tag is important. Michelle Kimball got a text out of the blue from a total stranger trying to chat her up. When she asked how he got her number, he told her he got it off her dog’s collar when he was petting the German Shepherd while it was on a walk with Michelle. Never put your home address on the collar, just a phone number.

    That's exactly how my obsessive ex-husband found out where I was living after our nasty divorce. My mom took care of my dog while I was at work, and she would let her out in the fenced yard for a little while every day. Apparently, he had someone knock at the door to distract my mom while he ran to the fence and took a picture of my dog's tag. That night, he jumped the gate (at my GATED community), and showed up at my front door. SCARY!

    I might suggest with your pets veterinarians permission: Putting your veterinarian's phone number and adress on your dog's collar, instead of your own.
    That way, you can let your vet know if you lose your dog. And any person who finds them can drop them off THERE instead of at your home.

      Pamela Bronson not everyone checks for a microchip. Not even the shelters because it really depends on how much the person who's doing intake cares. Just relying on a microchip also can get your dog spending time at the shelter instead of being returned home immediately. Not to mention the fines or boarding fees that you may get because your dog got out. Your dog is also exposed to any diseases that might be at the shelter at that time. It's extremely stressful for most dogs to be there. Definitely not an experience I would want my dog to have if I could avoid it.

    • @Beadledom2024
      @Beadledom2024 Před 2 lety +17

      Except a vast majority of people would find that errand far too inconvenient (ex: no time for such an errand, don't want dog hair in their car, it's at night time and won't take the dog home until vet/shelter opens in the morning, turned off by the audacity, or it's a kid or someone who doesn't even have a vet, etc) and will just let the dog loose again to go on about it's lost way. Many wouldn't have the resources to take your dog to a vet/shelter (no car, not enough gas, no money, homeless, a kid, disabled, can't keep the dog until the vet opens the next morning or Monday, etc).
      Frankly, I think your choice speaks to niche entitlement.

      Yeah and do you think all shelters scan it? I have read stories here where the shelter didn’t even bother to scan, this one story said that the shelter got their dog euthanised before they could even know, just because they didn’t scan. Microchipping doesn’t sound like a good idea from all these stories here.

      Just so you know for future reference you don’t need a collar to still get the dog home. Had a giant mastiff at the top of my moms neighborhood, saw some high school kids trying to get the dog in the car. Made my mom stop so I could help, only I found out it wasn’t their dog and they didn’t even live in the neighborhood. So they literally were going to steal someone dogs. I made my mom go get a leash, and I walked him down the hill 20 minutes to my house. No tag. I called animal control and asked for them to send a unit out to try and scan to see if he had a chip. BUT I made it very clear that even if they didn’t find a chip I wouldn’t let them taken (you should always keep a lost pet in area you find them at). They came out and scanned him, he had a chip but no one was answering. They were super sweet and said we will drive around and see if anyone stops us. Ten minutes later they came back with a grown man crying. He had ran out right in front of them. He hugged all of us, and explained that he was from a high crime area, and for some reason the dog did not like police belts, so he basically told us we saved the dogs life.
      So please don’t give up you don’t see a tag.
