"Those claps did nothing for my self-esteem"
Glad to see Jerrod coming back to doing stand ups. He has a really unique style and delivery.
I love his energy n style!!
He's just a dull white influenced Black man who isn't funny
he is super lame couldn't even get me to smile
@Johnson Matthew I feel the same way and his sitcom was the same thing,It just wasn't funny to me and I'm not even a simple minded person when it comes to comedy..
Yes, isn't it great that all of our comedians have emotional problems? How fun!
this was maybe the smoothest snl opening monologue I have ever seen, relaxed, confident, touching on current events, vulnerable, a good callback and funny af. kudos, really impressive.
Well put!
Yeah this is top tier.
Norm MacDonald was the best host!
Came here to say ALL of this
💯
Note that he never said "Will Smith", "Chris Rock", "Oscars", or "slap". And, how he so effortlessly segues into his own story, and ties it up so well at the end. This was one of the most sharply performed AND written comedy monologues on SNL in recent memory. And he was also great in the skits! No, I didn't know who he was until a few days ago, LOL. But I am so impressed with this guy. I'm gonna watch his special tonight.
I didn't know who this guy was until I saw this on CZcams! I'd never heard of him but I agree he is really gifted.
@@davemclellan4019 34 r
Agreed ☝🏼 💯
@@davemclellan4019 He had his own show called The Carmichael Show with Tiffany Haddish, Loreta Devine, Lil Rel Howery, David Alan Grier
JC is a true pro.
the way he alluded to "it" without ever explicitly saying what "it" was, and closing with the same punchline @Obama, was just brilliant.
Yeah. What was “it” that he was talking about?!!??!!!!????!!!!
@@renenowicki pretty sure ‘it’ was will smith slapping Chris rock
I wish they kept it like this the whole time instead of getting explicit
And Obama did come out to. White House event
@@renenowicki “It” was about coming out as a gay man during his HBO special, Rothaniel.
SNL needs to do more of this. It's nice to see an actual comedian, and one not super famous, hosting the show.
But wouldn’t the show’s monologues be watered down, if they do it as often? It needs to actually bring certain comedians on, from time to time.
yes "actual comedians" this guys is no comedian acting gaeyyy to be funny
that's the opposite of what they need to do. I only want to see super famous hosts.
@@chrisfinch8637 I dunno about watered down, but the show would certainly suck
@callmecatalyst it's not the audience's fault if the quality show they came to see ends up sucking because someone followed your terrible advice. it would be partly your fault, and partly the producers.
He should get the John Goodman and John Mulaney treatment and be asked to host every season as far as I’m concerned he’s brilliant
You’re only saying that because he’s gay
He's always been a GOAT
His timing is very subtle.
His showed was underated.
that's one of the worst, least funny, least entertaining monologues I've ever seen. he is no John Goodman, and I dunno what John Mulaney's claim to fame is that makes him worthy of hosting so many times, but at least he's entertaining.
Not gonna lie I’d never heard of him, but in a single monologue he became one of my new favorites 😂 He’s hysterical!
You gotta check out his show, The Carmichael Show. I was so hurt when he ended the series. You will be busting at the seams lol
This doesn’t compare to his stand up or his show on nbc
agree !!!
Me too. Takes one thing, DOESN'T actually talk about it, builds his whole monologue around it, and manages to be hilarious. That's talent!
I think the Carmichael Show is on Netflix now. it is great, co stars David Allen Grier as his dad.
That was seriously the best, most lighthearted, genuinely funny without doing a schtick monologue ever. Great job, dude
I concour. I had no idea who this is, but man, he crushed it. I will be watching his HBO special fo sho
That's actually his Schtick ironically lol
He was in a good mood and feeling confident so it made me feel good too
Didn’t know who he is , but now I do & it’s refreshing to see someone that does this naturally and so good !!
Same!
@@lbmartinet 😘
Same here too!
He had his own show. You should watch it, the Carmichael show.
This dude’s confidence on stage is next level
Arguably the funniest host monologue in a very, very long time.
woooot
Yes! For a long time the monologues on SNL have been "meh" at best. Jerrod really drew me in and had my full attention! He is amazing! 💙
so true!
FROM THE BIGGEST UNKNOWN...HIS WORDS NOT MINE...I KNEW WHO HE WAS...LOL...BUT WHO AM I🤣🦚
facts
I have never wanted to watch an opening monologue more than once… until this one. It’s so blasted good!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️
I love your haircut!
@@celieboo 🙂Thank you so much.
So charismatic. Hadn’t seen any content from him in a while, glad to see him again
Yes, yes he is, charismatic Perfect description. .
He's so, so cute.He looks like Ebay from "Good Times."
Jerrod is deadass hilarious. He needs to come back and host again next season. I’m genuinely gonna go watch his special after this.
Yeah going to watch his special. Never heard of him before. But he was hilarious and liked his style.
he also had a very good sitcom on nbc called the Carmichael show. he really is am amazing comedian and has not had enough of an audience to witness it in my opinion
Quit using the term “deadass” people! 🤮 Makes you sounds so ridiculously stupid..dead ass. You probably use the term “feels” too lol
Prepare to be wowed.
To people discovering Jerrod from this, if you're into black sitcoms please watch The Carmichael Show, it's honestly one of my favourite sitcoms till this day.
Not just a black sitcom, it was a great sitcom. I don't normally watch any sitcoms but the Carmicheal Show was fantastic. I was really surprised it ended so soon.
And leave O'Bama and Politics out of your routines....
Thanks because I immediately liked him and want to see more of him.
@@johnsjohnson448 Are you joking if you’re serious though get over it but I hope you’re joking
Big names too--David Alan Grier plays the dad! He an All Star
I have no idea who this guy is, but I like him. He's obviously confortable on stage and he knows how to land a joke
he's a comedian
This HBO special is his 2nd one. He really truly is underrated. You should check him out
@@drewt8138 3rd actually but yeah check them out.
not even a single idea eh
@Nik Zahui yes
I remember his short lived sitcom "the Carmichael show" and thought it should have received more publicity. It was clever and funny.
Agreed!!
100%
Right it was pretty good.
The Carmichael show wass great
🎯
He talked about it, without mentioning it and making the point without talking about it. Which is quite clever. He talked about division, homofobia and the lack of hope and leadership. Very intelligent and subtle.
I agree.
I'm going to be honest: Jerrod could straight up be a cast member at SNL, he gives off that vibe. I missed last night show and saw the Rainbow Bush skit first, and I really thought that he was a new cast member!
I thought the exact same thing lol
That would probably not happen since he has already had his own network sitcom, the Carmichael Show. It was awesome, by the way. It was on Netflix for awhile too.
@@jeanestewart6439 well one guy has been on all that, wild n out, mad TV, snl soooo
@@jeanestewart6439 yeah that would be so weird for him to go backwards like that he’s too good they need to let him write another show
I always pictured him being a writer on SNL that sometimes appears on-camera on Weekend Update, but gets promoted to cast member either because one of the main cast members left/got fired or because of positive feedback.
Or he could have been one of those comedians who auditioned for SNL and didn't make it, like Jim Carrey, Aubrey Plaza, Donald Glover, Jordan Peele, the cast of "Fridays", the cast of "Kids in the Hall", even some celebrities who probably wouldn't have been a good fit, like Sandra Bernhardt, Kathy Najimy, Bill Maher, and Lisa Kudrow.
Never heard of this guy, but something about his energy makes what he says amusing even when he's not really even telling joke.
This HBO special is his 2nd one. He really truly is underrated. You should check him out
That’s pretty much his whole brand of comedy
@@drewt8138 he has like 3 on HBO, and a TV show and produced a bunch of other TV shows and comedy specials
Well done! Jerrod is sensational!
Brilliantly hilarious. His use of the anticipatory silent pause in his stand up shows is amazing!
“i can’t even heal my family, how am i gonna heal the nation????” omfg me too bestie
Hilarious
This is my favorite monologue in a long, long time. I'm sure I'll watch this another 10 times by next Saturday
This guy is ADORABLE! I didn't know who he was but I will be looking for him. He owned that monologue! Instant fan ❤
So impressed with Jerrod Carmichael. This is the best opening monologue in a long time.
Jerrod is SO underrated, and has WAY too much potential. He’s gonna take the world over.
Um. No
I actually agree hes amazing
That was one of thee BEST opening monologues ever!! 👏🏾👏🏾
His timing is super nuanced and impeccably challenging. It’s on par with Chappelle not to compare but I have always loved it. It gives the audience time to think and respond on their own and then he confirms what you said in your head or he completely flips it and there in lies the social awkwardness that everyone loves and hates. It’s genius. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💜💜💜💜
🔥
“The Carmichael Show” was the last great, extremely well written, funny, thoughtful, traditional sitcom I saw on network TV. Jerrod is absolutely brilliant.
Give abbott elementary a try. I loved the charmichal show and I think Abbott elementary is very funny!
Yes!!!!! I miss that show
I am so happy that someone else remembers the Carmichael Show. Ditto to every point you made. I wish someone would bring it back.
@@freestyl2oo7 :Where is abbott elementary available?

This was an incredible good SNL Opening Monologue where Jerrod said plenty without even directly mentioning The Incident...very clever!!!
I could have sworn I heard
Jada's name come out of
"Putin's" mouth. Haha!
yes exactly
This was next level writing and absolutely superb delivery. I had no idea who this guy was, but now I know.
What incident? 🙈🙉💩
Reminds me a little of the Horse in the Hospital bit by John Mulaney.
I'm laughing so hard & loving this guy! Admit I had to Google him yesterday, bc I'm 64 LoL! He's fantastic, def watching special tomorrow!
I typed "who is J" and Google knew what I was asking. XD
I'm 60, understand
I’m 52 & idk who he is, either. I’ll look him up, tho. Because he’s worth knowing about. Great personality & delivery✌🏾.
Watch his earlier stuff for his comedy IMO the new special is kinda heavy
It's amazing that SNL can unite fans of all ages!
Never seen him before, but he's just MAGNETIC!
One of thee best monologue openings in SNL history.
Give me a break
"It feels like it happened somewhere between Jamiroquai and 9/11." Nailed it.
Fantastic monologue!
That was my favorite line.
@@andreadaniel8792 Good Jamiroquai references are hard to find! :)
@@elizabethlarson9655 I’ve been on a Jamiroquai bender for the past couple of months - loved this! ❤️
I won't lie, I had not heard of him before today but he got me crying laughing!
Jerrod is a legend!
He had his own sitcom, but it flopped. I always thought he was gay because of his mannerisms. Hollywood loves gay people.
His earlier specials on HBO are great and I'm not sure if The Carmichael Show was considered a "flop" or not, but it was fantastic and got great reviews (87% critics, 91% audience on RT)
He kind of tried to make a black Seinfeld. it was decently funny in dealing with social issues.
Give the Carmichael show a shot... is already cancelled, but its such a great sitcom
“I can’t even heal my family…..” 😂
That is one of THE BEST monologues I have heard on SNL in a LONG TIME! It feels like the old SNL with a modern perspective.
dude he's so much more comfortable on the mic than earlier in his career. Always loved this dude
Yea way more comfortable on a mic now lol. Huge fan of jerrod though. He’d laugh at that joke
He's finally living his truth...
I had no idea who this guy was, but I haven't laughed that hard at a monologue in years! GREAT JOB Jarrod.
Totally!
Same! Didn't know who he was before this monologue but he is hilarious! 😆
Best opening monologue in decades. Didn’t know who he was but going to get to know Jerrod now. 💕
Whatever
Never heard of him until last night watching SNL. Right after I immediately watched the HBO Special and loved it. He's so handsome and delivers so smooth. Thanks SNL for my intro of this soon to be Superstar!
Wow this monolog is refreshingly great! He is the king of making scripted speech look and sound like improv! He is not the typical comedian and that is a good thing. So relatable.
Great work!
Such a refreshing opening monologue. I love Jerrod and happy he's getting this exposure.
PS: The Carmichael Show was cancelled TOO SOON! It was incredibly written.
Noooo! It was cancelled?!?! I liked that show. Great cast and writing.
It really was
It was really good. I was so upset when I realized that they had cancelled it
The fact he made this whole monologue around this and people in a few months will watch this and not know what we arn't discussing is hilarious.
Never even thought about that… that’s the genius of “It” fr
Watching this in 2024 and had to Google what the it was about lol
Him. “I’m not gonna talk about it.”
Me: “Awww man.” 🙁
(Proceeds to talk about it) 😂😂😂
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Ayo it’s Preacher
But he didn't talk about it though 😂.
He indirectly did by keeping on mentioning the days he was thinking about it
yooooo Preacherrrrrrr, we need you to host snl someday man
Props to Jerrod for making a whole monologue about the slap without really talking about the slap lol.
Also he joked that's he's not *that* famous but iykyk Jerrod is hilarious.
I have never heard of him. His Monologue was Terrific!
Least famous SNL host? Not anymore! Perfectly summarized the trajectory of the week post slap!
His show is so funny.
You just had to say the s word didn't you?

His sitcom “The Carmichael Show” is one of the best tv shows of the last decade no lie. It’s so underrated
Yeah. Miss them. They talked about real ish!!!
One hundred percent.
Agreed, great seeing Tiffany and Lil Rel and now Jerrod getting a bit of recognition but that show got way too slept on , was really brilliant chemistry between all of them and great writing.(also haven't watched his latest special but the last one was amazing.)
This entire episode was a 100% winner. Bravo to writers and cast. And Jerrod.
This was a stunningly well done monologue. Ive seen a lot of monologues come and go and this is the one that stands out. It wasnt a particularly easy one to do either. I kept waiting for him to stumble on the material and get derailed, and it was like he was born to do this. If SNL doesnt bring this guy back to do another show, thats ALL ON SNL.
That's the beauty of his stand up. He pauses and makes you listen. He reminds me of Greer Barnes, different but similar style.
He's so smooth at delivering his lines and even his mannerisms just flow. And yeah how he was able to talk about a topic in a way we can all relate to without mentioning once exactly what it was, I thought was genius. And that ending! Did not see that coming but super hilarious and the 100% truth of what the nation needs! 😆
I went from "Who is Jerrod Carmichael" to "SNL needs to scour the earth for these unknown comedians like Jerrod, my now-personal-favorite, and let us feel hope/sadness/painful laughter all at once" in about 6 minutes.
Watch the Carmichael Show
That monologue was so funny but he is spitting facts !! So real!!
He was very good.
Dude already had his own sitcom! Not really unknown .
because the nation needs to heal. xp
Very self-aware -- "I'm the least famous host on Saturday Night Live." That took a lot of humility to say that in a culture that is so full of braggarts. I like this guy.
Bravo!
Good to see Jerrod back on tv and living his truth. The Carmichael show was so great. Kick ass monologue.
Thank you! Finally! He had a whole eponymous show on a major network and everyone talm’bout Never heard of him. 😆
That is easily one of the best monologues ever on SNL, wonderfully poised and Intelligent but most of all truthfully funny.
I didn't know who he was, but this monologue is both very funny and brilliant. He actually talked about it without talking about it.
This HBO special is his 2nd one. He really truly is underrated. You should check him out
He's right. I never heard of him before this, but I love him. So poised. So funny.
This young man killed it in one of the best guest opening monologues ever. Maybe THE best.

Totally agree 🎯👍
Didn’t know this guy before, he’s GREAT!
He is under rated, He had a comedy show on NBC about 4yrs ago it was so funny.. Look him up on youtube, He really is great..
I had no idea who Jerrod Charmichael was until this appearance. He absolutely killed in every skit. He approached his host duties like a job, and not a stunt or promotional gig. There were no unforced errors, no obvious cue card reading, and it just seemed there was excellent collaboration with the writers. The doll bit was the funniest SNL skit I had seen in a long time.
Why have I watched this set six times?
Wow. This was one of the best monologues on snl I’ve ever seen.
One of the best monologues in years, and from someone I had literally never heard of until now. That was a home run

This was a really good monologue. Fantastic job. It was entertaining from star to finish , not a single second wasted. Loved all of it
I’ve never seen Jerrod Carmichael this fly!!! I love how he comes out as gay and then the fashions level up. Like he’s free, free!
Man I love it when an artist who is under the reader has a chance to finally get the spotlight and KILLS IT. Props to you Jerrod:)
One of the best mono’s I’ve ever seen. Congratulations young man! Nice to finally meet you, that suit is lit 🔥
That was a kick ass monologue!
Actually it was a slap face monologue. 😆
Yes that is what Chris Rick should have done to Will when he turned his back. Kick Ass !
I'm so glad to see him back on TV. The Carmichael Show was vastly underrated and didn't get the attention it deserved. I'd love to see it come back on a streaming platform.
I know, I missed that show and was totally broken when it was canceled, This guy has a dry humor that I desperately need in my life.. love him..
I hope so too!
It is streaming on Hulu
Was he straight on that show?
It is on Hulu.
"I have to be the LEAST famous host in SNL history" he says, right after I Googled who he was. His stuff's so amazingly smooth, confident, and hilarious, how have I not heard of him before this?
His HBO special “Rothaniel” is very likely going to win an Emmy this year 🤞🏾. It’s BRILLIANT. Watch if you haven’t. It surpasses Hannah Gadsby’s powerful (Emmy-winning) “Nanette” special. So brutally honest and still laugh-out-loud funny at times… We need more comedians like Carmichael. Absolutely believe the hype!
One of the best monologues in a long time. Flawless.
Definitely one of the best opening monologues I’ve heard in years. Congratulations to Jerrod Carmichael! Can’t wait to watch more!

Surely the best opening monologue I’ve seen in a decade at least! Absolute incredible and love how he engaged so deeply with the audience
BRING HIM BACK! he’s so naturally talented and funny. what a joy!
He is awesome, but I want to add to that, his first HBO special came out in 2014. That's not just 'natural' talent. He has WORKED at this his whole decade-plus career, he EARNED the talent he has. It takes a really good stand-up to make it look that natural and easy.
