So funny to hear everyone's takes on the movement keys. As someone who used to mainly pvp I didn't have a key for moving backwards but, now that I play more pve backward movement can be useful for slight adjustments on dodging ground swirlies. I use e for forward s and f for strafing and shift d for moving backwards, saving d for another ability bind. I find having the movement keys shifted to the right opens up more keybinds.

The most important thing is to put off GCD buttons on easily accessible binds like mouse buttons or E, F, R. For example, when I play WW, sometimes I have to pop fort brew, karma, tiger, images, and maybe an interrupt as well, and your key binds need to enable that.

    movement: esdf
    rotation abilities: aqwrtgvcz12345
make capslock ctrl, use ctrl and shift with pinky for healer click binds
CDs: on open rotation keys or extra mouse buttons as needed (druids...)
ctrl and shift with index finger keys (rtgv5) for CDs
This maximizes keys easily accessible near the movement keys, particularly pinky. Since pinky isn't needed for movement. Their scorn for esdf movement is funny; it's better in every way. Most keyboards even have a bump on f, making it easier to find.

Taunt on E (while tanking, otherwise its a clickable somewhere on a bar),
Q is the rotational button that is only pressed once every 10 / 15 sec (Purifying brew),
R is always bound to some type of frontal aoe skill like Firebreath or Typhoon
For some reason my speed-up / mobility enhancer is always on V (Velocity).

And the best idea is getting a keyboard that has a split Spacebar, with a Function key in-between the two Spacebars, so you can use F1-F5 (or F6) on the same keys as your regular number row, except you just have to shift your thumb that's sitting on your Spacebar slightly to the right to hit the Function key. I use 1-6, Shift + 1-6 and F1 - F6 for my abilities, and my fingers never have to stretch for anything, and my hand remains in the same place for all of them.

Imo its super personal preference. I try to make it generic and with some reason, but I'm also inconsistent with multiple keys because of habbit. But I do use modifiers alot rather then more different keys, its easier for me to press Shift/Ctrl/Alt + 4/T/G which is my farthest away keys from WASD. I have remacrod my numeric keyboard and some F-keys to my mouse. So I might have normal 1 for something and Mouse 1 for something else
    I like WASD Movement
Mobility : Shift + Space (WTF?) and most often F, except DH which has blade dance here, dono why.
QEF2 For rotation cause I have short fingers and they are closer than 1 2 3 4
I like having kick realy easy to click like they talk about so I have it on the middle of my mmo mouse keys so button 5 + shift modifier for focus, but I use Ctrl+F for mouseover kick, because i dont wanna mouseover and press a button with the mouse at the same time.
Stun R, If u got a 2nd stun usualy Shift+1. For Rogue it's 1 because U have to be in stealth for cheap shot anyway (Or Dance)
I always have Trinkets on V and Shift V
    Racial G
    dps pot/pvp trinket shift+X
Health pot CTRL+G, Stone 4 (no logic here just what I use)
Covenant class ability shift + mouse4 - This I Know I should swap because sometimes I accidently use it when I've used a shift modifier and going to a spam ability on 4. I just havnt figured out where I should change it too yet.
    Ctrl+E for covenant ability
Shift + 2 for Purge except for Mage which has it on C, which mind fucks me alot but when I try swapping on the mage I instead fuck it up out of habbit
Major CD Shift+Q : Which probly is to easy to click for how often u use it but I very rarely accidently press it
T and Shift T is some kind of Mobility ability or cast while moving (so mobilityish) like Monk/Lock teleport, place the spot with Shift + T, use it with T. Mage/Shaman cast while moving is here too.
Rest of my keybinds is abit "random" but not realy I just don't know how to explain them in generic terms.

I slowly added more and more hotkeys over time. At the moment I have 42 keys between modifiers and stuff on my mouse I can hit. I rebound a lot of stuff all around WASD. Pretty much anything left of H has been rebound and scooted around. Example, I use R, CTRL+R and ALT+R and move that to T. I also use CTRL+T to set focus.

QWE is the superior movement setup
this allows u to hit A and D without having to take your finger off your movement keys
try hitting E while moving with D.. you have to physically take your finger off the key
binding Q and E to strafe right/left allows u to slide into A and D much easier for a stun/silence

I use a gamepad and an mmo mouse... My movement is a joystick on my left thumb on the gamepad... x.x; Rotational abilities are 1-3, and 5. Spenders are 6 and 7. Movement abilities (ghost wolf, blind, roll) is 4. 8 is covenant ability/neck ability/legion artifact ability. 9 is defensives. 0 is taunt/rez/utility. A lot of my major cooldowns are on macros, like ctrl+alt+1 is wall, ctrl+alt+2 is big 3 min cd. Shift 1-4 is aoe rotational stuff. Shift 4-7 are utility stuff/stuns. My healthstone/healthpot/kyrian phial is also macros ctrl+alt+5 and 6. ctrl+alt+7 is kick...
Gamepad also has B, C, M, N, space, tab, shift, ctrl.
Easiest way to explain is my main is brew. So 1 is BOK, 2 is tiger palm, 3 is rushing jade wind, 4 is roll, 5 is keg smash, 6 is breath of fire, 7 is SCK, 8 is kyrian ability, 9 is celestial brew 0 is taunt - is RoP.
Shift 1 is crackling jade lightning, shift 2 is transcendence, shift 3 is teleport, shift 4 is leg sweep, shift 5 is paralize, shift 7 is tigers lust, shift 8 is trinket, shift 9 is purifying brew, shift 0 is target statue and taunt, shift - is revive.
ctrl+alt+1 is zen med, ctrl+alt+2 is purifying brew, ctrl+alt+3 is invoke nuizhao, ctrl+alt+5 is healthstone ctrl+alt+6 is healthpot ctrl+alt+7 is kick ctrl+alt+8 is gateway toy, ctrl+alt+9 is hearth.

ctrl F is so easy for me to press. I press ctrl with my the palm area right under my pinky. Outside of my main rotation, I'm pretty comfortable with anything left of G with ctrl and shift modifier. I dont use alt. Q E to strafe cos there's always good real estate when I need a new keybind.

WASD for movement (though I still have A and D as turn, and use the right mouse button to hold camera steady, which converts them to strafe buttons--thinking of changing this).
tilde for dots (sometimes for charge, wild charge type abilities), 1 for short cooldown rotational abilities (judgement, shadow dance, etc), 2 for filler spell, 3 for rotational buff ability or other short cd ability, 4 for weaker/spammable spender, 5 for big spender, 6 for situational or longer cd damage ability (not major cds though)
-all of these are based on which finger has to press the button, so I want my strongest finger pressing the "strong" button, and I don't want to have a spam button on 1 because that's my pinky/ring finger.
-all of these have a ctrl mod variant that is for aoe filler (ctrl-2), covenant ability (ctrl-4), aoe spender or execute (ctrl-5), execute if not on ctrl-5 is on ctrl-6, then some more situational buttons are on ctrl-1+3, usually with a semi-major cd on c-3, and a ranged ability (for melee) on c-1, with trinkets sometimes filling the gaps.
Q and c-Q are defensives, E is interrupt, c-E is usually a CC ability, but that depends (always a targeted ability), c-tilde is usually a utility ability. F s-F c-F are all movement buttons, with covenant movement on s-F, primary movement on F, situational or specialty movement on c-F (on druid I have dash on F, stamp roar on c-F, soulshape on s-F)
The rest of my buttons are on my mmo mouse, I have the g-600 so three large mouse buttons, plus mouse wheel that clicks and rocks left or right, then a grid of 12 buttons. The two buttons below the wheel are profile change and bags. The third big mouse button is the g-shift (which changes the function of the grid buttons). The grid is bound to F1-F12, g-shift grid adds shift to that. On this grid are mostly utility buttons (and major CD ability that doesn't fit into c-1 through c-6), but this is much more varied by class. Basically there is no button that has to be clicked. I do have a sort of pattern I follow but utility varies so much it's hard to explain the pattern. In general, the non-shift buttons are standard utility, shift buttons are like healthstone, health pots, shapeshifts (s-F7 through s-F12), other rarely pressed buttons, or just things I want visible that I don't press a dedicated keybind for. Button 5 (rock the wheel right) doubles up pressing the same key as F (main movement ability).
Shift-Scroll up is dps potion, Ctrl-Scroll up is random mount, Ctrl-Scroll down is specific mount, depending on character.
I also have a few OPie wheels: shift-B is for teleports, mouse button 4 (rock wheel left) is for certain utility (mostly hunter or warlock pet stuff, summon stone, lock rocks, gate, tame beast, flare, etc.), shift-R is for targeted raid markers with a jump slice for banners (I usually just use the MRT raid bar for banners).
    Boss button is on G.
Things shift slightly for tanks/healers, though tanks basically just have to slot in an extra defensive or something. Taunt is on 4, active mit on 5. For healers, all of my targeted healing abilities are done using Clique on whatever unit frame I'm trying to affect (raid frames, party frames, target, player, focus). All of the left-click buttons are the sort of "manual" single target heals (heal, flash heal and their equivalent in each class, like vivify/soothing mist, etc). The stronger of the two is on shift. Ctrl left click is usually a trinket or other class-specific type of ability like pw: serenity. Right click is usually a hot or pw:s, shift right click is a stronger hot, weaker/spammable aoe button, or WoG, ctrl right click is a stronger/cooldown aoe button like wild growth. Middle click is dispell (on friendlies) or soothe/purge (on enemies). Button 4 (rock wheel right) is an external defensive, the rest of the middle mouse button stuff with modifiers depends heavily on the spec. All of the non-targeted healer stuff goes on dps buttons that aren't used for the dps rotation, so things like efflo, healing rain, Light of Dawn. Raid CDs are on the mouse grid.

@Reulorics Pressing shift requires me to move my whole hand, so I try to avoid pressing the actual key for things I'm going to be pressing a lot. Also my g-shift button isn't actually the shift key, it just enables a second layer of buttons that happen to be bound to shift+something.

WASD to move forward/back and strafe, 1-6, shift+1-6, Q,E,R,F,T,G,C and shift variants of those, side mouse buttons for trinket/racial, middle mouse button ptt. ctl comes into play when shifting forms. if I need more I can incorporate V or X. Z is a little too akward for me to hit so I don't use it.

Lemme put you on. I'm an fps gamer so my mouse only has middle click and 2 mouse buttons on the side. the ones on the side i use for movement abilities, and the middle click is usually a stun. Tilda is the goated interrupt key, E and q are the goated healthpot / defensive key. Also on subtlety I had eviscerate on 3 and then black powder on shift+3 so all I would have to do is hold shift if i wanted to switch to aoe, it was surprisingly convenient.
Then again I put my immunity on F4 so wtf do i know lmao

Put your left hand on the keyboard. Where does it land naturally? ASDF, logically S and F would be strafe, E is forward and you don’t back peddle. S and F also have the little bumps so your hand finds itself where it should be off of feel.

My keybinds are awful but I learned all of my ability keybinding muscle memory from Diablo 2. I use 1-5 and f1-f4 for my main abilities, plus ~ and a handful of other more modern binds, but the biggest thing is having a 12 button mouse I can use along with modifiers.
Honestly wow just has way too many abilities. I don't feel like it would lose anything significant if you could bind everything you need in less than 25 binds.

I would like to hand out a pro tip myself for keybinding! I made a spreadsheet where i ranked keybinds 1-3 depending on how easy they were to press. THEN i put in spells/Abilities depending on how important they were into a keybind slot. Like Mount, not very important (Shift+H for me), ranked 3. Insta heal, Rank 1, needs to be fast and easy to use(G for me). (for example)
Also another tip is moving your entire left hand 1 "click" to the right. This free's up a whole lot of combinations on your left side while you can still reach your modifiers. Like who uses Caps Lock? Yeah noone, so there you instantly have free 3 combinations with modifiers
