  • Hi and welcome to todays video from Ruatapu to Ross via the historic Hokitika to Ross railway formation including the impressive Totora river railway bridge along the West Coast Wilderness Trail on a stunning West Coast afternoon along with a stop at the Chinese gold minors memorial garden non the shore of the Ross lake that once was a open cast gold mine that was depleted in 2002 and filled in with water to become a lake and wildlife reserve.
The village of Ross was established in the 1860s and was the centre of one of New Zealand's alluvial goldfields in the late 19th century.
The railway line from Hokitika to Ross was closed in 1980. Today the railway line is still in operation from Greymouth to Hokitika and is primary used to move tonnage from the Westland Dairy Products Factory in Hokitika to Christchurch. I have videos of trains operating on this unique railway line on my channel.
Today Ross is a popular destination with the Start/Finish point for the popular West Coast Wilderness Trail that links Ross to Greymouth, along with a rich history of Gold mining and interesting walks and places to explore on the doorstep also the Ross Top 10 Holiday Park is a must visit with its interesting accomodation options right on the shore of the Ross beach.
