      I'd say it's in the ballpark around 60-70% but you'd definately notice the absence of the Tristereochorus, stereo pitch detune and the parallel/midboost sound of the Tyler guitar. As Richard said: the sound of this video (and Dann's recordings) is around 30% the guitar.

    Very nice, thanks for this continuing tone journey! Fascinating listening, and great pointers.
    For a theatre production of Rock of Ages a week ago, I built something close to this in the Line6 Helix, using parametric EQ to emulate the mid-boost on the guitar, a model of a Soldano clean amp used DI, with micro pitch shift going into the TriChorus model, multi-tap delay and reverb, all fully stereo out to the PA. I needed a Floyd Rose for some other parts of the show, so I used my Charvel SoCal HH, but the mid-position pick-up selection (both inside coils) got me pretty close. I also blended the DI sound in with the Soldano crunch channel - with a cab model - to give more definition to the distorted sounds.

    Another great video Richard! Your playing is immaculate as always and that guitar really suits you! I have also discovered recently how much of an impact the James Tyler configuration has on the Dann Huff (and Landau/Lukather) signature sound!*

    • @SessionGold
      @SessionGold Před 3 měsíci

      * I am still so amazed that only James Tyler is doing this series/parallel (and even midboost) on strats! I have seen some Suhr and Anderson guitars have something familiar but that's it... why has Fender for example never done this? I think it is an awesome way of getting more (awesome) tones out of a strat. I don't think it will be too expensive also...

      Tom Anderson calls it the Switcheroo. There is a tiny DIP switch inside the control cavity for each pickup to choose between parallel and split. Center is off, down is series, and up is the chosen DIP mode. The 'blower' switch overrides the toggle setting to bridge series. He's had it as an option for over 30 years.

    These are seriously some of the best tones i've ever heard anyone make on the tubes. The complexity is amazing. Immediately this reminded me of 2 tones that I always loved and never could get. One being the late 80s Bad Brain tones (LA style) and the other being Stone temple Pilots Core. I had zero idea that the mid-boost on the Tyler guitar was a Demeter! STP played a Demeter preamp. Brains used a Mesa Boogie MK III or something similar. Amazing info and tones my friend!

      I have a Demeter TGA-3 70 watt head and the ProCo Rat to go with it - I've spoken to James about my amp. He only made 200 of all TGA types. It's a 2.5 channel amp- the gain channels share controls, so they're not fully independent. I don't know what DD used for modulation, but it was almost certainly a harmonizer of some sort.

      Hey man! You're absolutely right- ridiculous that I failed to mention that. So, there was compression from two sources- a little on the way in via my preamp and then a logic 1176 style compressor added to the guitar bus (cleans only). I tried using my Wampler but placing it after the loaded down amp raised the noise floor too much.

    Incredible video, and glad to see you’re friends with Mason! Could you explain, guitar-wise what it would take to go from a stock 2nd position start tone to get to what this is doing? Are the middle and bridge in series or parallel with Dan’s clean tone?

    • @RichardWatson
      @RichardWatson  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey man! So, as far I know, Dann would use just the bridge in parallel when in the 2nd position. I'd say the mid boost is a massive component though as, when turned down, it almost acts like a buffer and gives you these "hi fi" hyped highs and lows.

  • @joshtomlinson8169
    @joshtomlinson8169 Před 2 měsíci

    rich..you really are the best to ever do it - such taste, such touch on an electric guitar.
    as you said before, a lot of us are prohibited these tones.. i know the pickups aren’t too expensive but with just a normal single coil strat: how could we achieve these secret mid boost settings?
    perhaps a mid boost in the signal chain? demeter fat boost? what are your thoughts?
    does he split his humbuckers or does he always use series parallel because that’s pretty different

    • @RichardWatson
      @RichardWatson  Před 2 měsíci

      Hey Josh!
      That's very kind of you, man- thank you!
      So, a couple of things to consider...
      Firstly, you can order a Tyler spec mid boost straight from Demeter (for around $100 or so) - you'd just need to find a competent tech or, ideally, luthier (as it would require routing out a battery compartment, unless you put it underneath the pick guard).
      But, if we take the boost out of the equation, what the mid boost is doing for the majority of Dann's clean tones is not actually adding mids, it's hyping bass and treble. Because you're introducing active circuitry at the source, it's producing the same effect as introducing a buffer. Most of those 80's session players would have the mid boost active but turned all the way down. The only clip where I actually used the "mid" part of the mid boost in this video was the "L.A. Funk" segment.
      So, if you were trying to get close to these sounds without different pickups or the boost. I would be going for a SUPER clean sound (no break up), hype the bass and treble with on the amp or with an EQ pedal, mostly use position 2 or 4 on your Strat, go for a fast attack, low threshold compression (and A LOT of it), micro pitch shift in parallel, Tri Stereo or Dimension D chorus (or both), digital delay (probably a dotted 8th or a 1/4 AND a dotted 8th) and a plate or digital hall type reverb. Blending in a clean DI makes a massive difference and I've seen some folks get close using an acoustic simulator (basically you're removing the filtering effect the cabinet would usually have).
      Re: The humbucker, for cleans I think it would always tend to used in conjunction with the middle, but I know Dann would use the humbucker by itself (and in parallel) for certain lead tones.
      Hope that helps!

    Some lovely tones, great stuff. Would be super curious how close you could get to the single note line tones you did at 6:10 using a BOSS EQ pedal (or the EQ in something like the HX Stomp). I.e. what the mid boost switch is doing using a different guitar.

      Hi, have same quest. For what's it's worth couldn't get anywhere close with the boss ge7. Demeter did to a special fat control pedal with a Tyler switch. But are as rare as Unicorn poop in the UK, so have never heard one. I am currently using a Ehx soul food klone as a clean mid boost, cheap reliable and as close as I've got. Interested in anybody elses experience, hope this helps ,Cheers

      I'd be very curious to see if you could get close! The thing with the mid boost is that, when it's active but turned down, it adds a bunch of highs and lows (almost like a "hi fi" mode) before it does anything to the mids. The boost itself is SUPER powerful and I found I only really used it in that one instance, turned up a 3rd of the way. Try hyping lows and highs first, to see if you can approximate the "active but turned down" tone!

    Hey Richard! You are a tone historian. Dann said he used up all his chorus in the '80s! I have an ancient Sony HR--MP5 that has a program that gets _really_ close to that pristine, shimmery tone Dann used on "See You In My Dreams". I typically use my Anderson hollow DropTop for just about everything, and aside from the midboost (which is a Demeter mid boost), it has all the features of the Tyler Dann Huff model.
    Tyler used Tom Anderson necks in the late '80s, as did Pensa-Suhr, and Sadowsky.

    Great tone....also check out Corey Hart "Boy in a box" album...I believe that was recorded with a Rockman (the Michael Byron-Hehir would have to confirm that) Amazing Michael Casswell taught you...he was an amazing player with unbelievable feel and the "Mr Mister" Valleys Arts guitar is killer...keep up the fantastic content!

    Amazing job as always, quick question, how do you fell not having a tone knob on that guitar ? I would have the same thing but squeeze a tone knob because I use it a lot.

      Thanks man! I actually found I didn't miss it at all, but that's likely because I rarely use mine!

    What overdrive/distortion pedal did you use on the LA funk portion of this video? I know this video was primarily about Dann Huff’s clean tone which sounds fantastic but so do the overdriven distorted guitar parts you played on that LA funk (commodores) song portion 6 minutes in. Thanks for any info on that

      The drive sound was from my Mesa Boogie Mark IV (lead channel) - any kind of Boogie architecture (pedal/amp sim) should get close!

    Great tones and playing! Could you sharevthe Primal Tap settings? I have been using Echoboy mainly and PT is rather unknown to me even if I have it.
    Cheers!

      Sure! One side set to a 1/4 note, the other to a dotted 8th, depth and speed on the modulation set to around 10 O'clock, feedback around 50%, "X" control at zero, low end cut by 50%.
