How to connect NDI with Zoom

  • In this video tutorial and blog post, you will learn how to connect Zoom with NDI. NDI is an IP video standard used by many video production professionals. Zoom is of course, the popular online video communication solution. By connecting these two solutions together you can create some very interesting and powerful online communication systems. Connecting NDI and Zoom bridges the gap between professional video production solutions and consumer video conferencing.
How to connect NDI with Zoom
First of all you may want to read up on a few of our past blog posts to get up to speed. We recently published a video tutorial explaining how to connect OBS with Zoom and how to connect vMix with Zoom. OBS, vMix, and many other video production solutions including Wirecast, xSplit, eCamm Live, and MimoLive all support NDI and virtual camera outputs. With a virtual camera output, software video production solutions can bring a bunch of awesome features into your Zoom experience. At the StreamGeeks, you may have noticed that we capture our Zoom video conferencing sessions inside of our live streams. This allows us to live stream our Zoom video conferences to multiple CDN destinations such as Facebook, LinkedIn and CZcams.
Here are just a couple reasons why you would want to connect Zoom with a video production software:
    1. Higher quality video recordings
    2. Higher quality video inside of Zoom (Color Correction tools and other video enhancements)
    3. Higher quality audio inside of Zoom (VST 3 plugins and other audio enhancements)
    Bringing NDI video into Zoom
NDI video is actually easier than NDI audio. NDI video is captured simply by using a virtual camera output. Most software solutions that support NDI also support a virtual camera output option. You can select this virtual camera output option as your webcam inside of Zoom to use it. In many software solutions, including vMix and Wirecast, you do need to enable the virtual camera output. Another free way to ingest video into Zoom is the free NDI Virtual Camera Input tool. This tool is only available for Windows. In our tutorial video we sent video with the NDI scan coverter tool and received it for Zoom with the NDI Virtual Camera input.
You can download the free NDI tools here: ndi.tv/tools
    Bringing NDI audio into Zoom
Audio is covered in more detail in our OBS to Zoom and vMix to Zoom tutorial videos. Most NDI sources include an audio option which can also be brought into Zoom. More importantly you need to consider how you will bring audio in and out of Zoom. There are essentially two systems to set up for this. One is a single audio and video system with a microphone and speaker. The other would be using virtual audio cables to bring audio back and forth between your video production software and Zoom. Again check out our other blog posts listed above for more information on this.

Many thanks! Great tutorial. A question: So far I have used virtual the Audio Cable
with the steps below for the same result - What's the pro (and cons) using NDI instead?
    1) install Virtual Audio Cable
    2) go to Settings and set OBS to monitor audio using Virtual Audio Cable
    3) in the mixer's advanced properties, set audio sources that you want audible to Monitor and Output
    4) set the audio input in Zoom, Skype - whatever to Virtual Audio Cable
    5) Use Virtual Audio Cable as mic

Hi Paul, I'm a pastor in CT, and I have a question. With our church we plan to use Zoom with ProPresenter and we want sound to go directly into Zoom from our churches sound system. Currently, as stop gap, we have a PC connected to Zoom with an ambient microphone set up in the church to capture the sound that is coming through the church speakers, etc. Of course this is just a stop gap until we get ProPresenter up and Zoom would be one of the Channels, along with the Cameras 1, 2 and 3 that are connected to the Atem Mini. We purchased a Focus Rite Scarlett Audio interface with the hopes of using that as the medium to get the audio into Zoom and we are just running into a wall. We can REALLY use some help!!!!

hi Paul... ok let me start with a short description and what i have done... i have setup vmix and vMix desktop capture and zoom on a seperate machine..... then i have my main vmix laptop... setting up the video is easy and working well with no issues.... my major issue is the audio... as soon as i add the audio and i might be doing it wrong hence me asking for step by step guide on this is that as soon as i add zoom to my vmix and a vmixcall the vmixcall gets there audio back on there device... also tested zoom with a webcam connected directly into my main vmix laptop and i get the same as soon as u talk then u get your feedback... if i take zoom out of the loop all is working well between vmixcall and local camera and audio..

Thank you for making this video.
    I have a question.
I need to stream one zoom webinar to 4 other laptops with their own zoom accounts in real time.
    Scenario -
I login through my zoom account and deliver a webinar . I have 4 other laptops that have seperate zoom account logins of my 4 other affiliates with their own audience.
I meed them to handle them individually and share their own replies.
however I want the stream of my main webinar to be shared on all 4 laptops so that they (with different zoom accounts) can see my feed in real.time)
and yes,i have to use 5 different zoom accounts. I simply cannot increase the webinar limit.because i want everyone to join a different webinar .cannot mix people.
So what solution do u suggest?
    thank you

Hi there! Would you happen to know the easiest way to join a Zoom meeting while running sound through OBS and an audio interface? I have an artist that is running vocals and guitar through Focusrite and OBS, but will need to join a Zoom meeting for a concert... is there a simplified way to do this? I can set it up through other platforms, but I don't use Zoom much, unfortunately...

Helpful tutorial, especially for the audio routing bits. However, unless I missed it, it looks like this is still a Windows-only solution. I'd love to be able to do this sort of thing for presentations for work; however, company provided computers for my team are macOS only and connecting to a company Zoom meeting with non-company hardware is discouraged. Hoping the NDI folks work out a way to add Virtual Camera support to macOS.

in OBS NDI. I had installed (i) OBS, (ii) obs-ndi NewTek (windows installer
version) and (iii) NDI virtual input (received email for installation) into my Lenovo
notebook x1 Gen 6. However, I selected the NDI Output Settings to OBS, the system
tray for OBS virtual camera was not able to show OBS output, it showed remote
computer only. Therefore, there was no audio input (i.e. Microphone) sound
output from OBS to Zoom meeting. Many thanks.
