I agree that there is an anti-EV bias in Canada as well. Although anti-EV stories aren't perhaps as blatant or as frequent as the Daily Mail piece they do exist. What is most disturbing is that the comments sections accompanying these pieces are populated by so many self styled experts repeating absolute rubbish that is easily disproved by even the most modest research. It is absolutely exhausting trying to counter these clowns without resorting to profanity because it seems that no matter how often the facts are presented these people are immune. One other thing I have found annoying is that many comments sections have an arbitrary time frame to accept comments which allows much of the spread bullshit to remain unchallenged.

And if each car in the UK fills up once a month on average, that's ~1,600 million kWh of energy a year.

Number one of course is the drug companies and honestly I don't think they have any skin in the game what number two and number three is the automotive companies and the oil companies and combined they spend even more than the drug companies do. I can imagine that the guys in the advertising sales part of the company is constantly telling editorial hey you guys need to do more Aunty Evie stuff to make it easier for us to sell our ads

I’ve made this comment all over social media for years, EVs didn’t invent pot holes or even make them more prevalent. It’s funny how bad road quality and potholes weren’t a national media trend until after Tesla/EVs gained mainstream popularity. And somehow the only solution was to charge EV owners more taxes in equivalence to the fuel tax a gas guzzling full size SUV that travels over 20k miles a year. As if all roads were pothole free and perfect before EVs came around. No studies done or long term data were provided to support this claim. Just lobbying politicians and lawmakers to put pressure on EV sales in order to reduce their market success.

Can't have it both ways. Which is it? Small number - no effect? Or small number - major effect?

The media doesn't need to add fuel to anti EV; the reality is they are heavy and use more mining so they aren't green or zero emission; they have fake range claims, and Chinese EVs are trash. The only thing moving EV sales has been big subsidies which are unfair to those who can't afford a new car; helping to pay some that do with zero justification because EVs aren't green. EVs need to get their weight down; find a less impactful chemistry; and vastly improve build quality.

Simple comparison. Tesla m3 is in the same class as the BMW 3 series is, 3,600-4,000 with fluids is the Weight range for both model's.
Tesla model s LR is the same exact weight range as a dodge charger hellcat is. Both weigh about 4,400#
Ford lightning, tesla ct and rivian r1t are 6,000-7,000# and compete against the ram trx&raptor R which weigh? 6,000-6,800# with fuel.😎
A Chevrolet bolt ev weighs the same as a Ford focus se with options and fuel does. Same segment compact 5dr us built hatches!
A lucid air weighs 4,600-5,300# any competing luxury ice 4dr full size family sedan will weigh a similar amount with options&fluids.
Evs can weigh more in some cases but it's come down a LOT over the past 5 years and will drop below ice competitors within 3 years.
Another example geely radar r6 ev mid size truck weighs less than a mid size Ford ranger does!
