      I am gathering all the ingredients, but when I am trying to order unhulled oats or barley, it gives me oat grouts and barely grouts, can I use this ? Also the chart is showing 40 grams of wheat grain, but you where showing 30 grams, when adding it your mixture. Sorry for the long reply, but I want to get it right.

      @@Just_Lurking8 if the groats have the same nutritional value, it can be used in place. I am not sure if I said it in the video but for the recipes I recommended the grain of amaranth, however I had used the inflated/popped amaranth. that’s why I lowered the amount of some things in my food mix

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  Před 3 lety

      Raw lentils contain lectins which, some lectins are not beneficial, but almost all the grains and seeds we eat and are also known to be safe for hamsters and other rodents, have them as well. I wouldn’t rule lentils out for that just as I wouldn’t rule out wheat or barley for that reason either. In adult gerbil diets they only have a small percentage of it anyway! As for growing gerbils, the larger portion is fine as the majority of the “toxic” chemicals are unlikely to be harmful for them. :)

    Do you find that the mix goes stale after a while? Do you ever can it or store extra in a ziplock or sealed airtight container? Do you usually make such a large batch at once? I currently feed my hamster pellets and they definitely smell MUCH fresher when I first open the bag… but a small bag lasts him months! I’m planning to get 2 gerbils so I imagine they will eat at about the same speed as my hamster.

      Dried carrots actually contain more sugar than they do fresh, and peas can be included but they have their own guaranteed analysis, so you would have to make sure you are not exceeding their maximum needs of protein, fiber, and fat. As for the mix, you should really mix the ingredients very well. Shaking isn’t suffice, manual mixing is going to be better.

      Correct! While it seems out there, a lot of the fiber is coming from seeds high in protein and so it balances out. Crude protein and crude fat are more important to look at, at least with the information we have. It is also believed that gerbils have low dietary fiber needs, but it’s a huge part for them in the wild as their natural foods are rich in fiber. They eat a lot of grasses, roots, grains, seeds
