- The American company General Dynamics within the framework of the exhibition AUSA-2022, held in Washington from October 10 to 12, 2022 showed a prototype of the new American tank Abrams X. If you look back a bit in history, this company's recent work to update the US main battle tank, all those Abrams SEP v3 and SEP v4 were frankly disappointing. All this was a frank marathon - sensors, thermal imaging sensors, and onboard electronics were updated, and something was done to the suspension and powertrain. At the root, it is still the old Abrams, a tank from the 80s of the last century.

I think the end of the video is a key: what sort of active armour will be used? If the trophy system is not a good current defense, what's next? Without viable active protection we might as well design a remotely operated vehicle. Perhaps an attritable companion vehicle too. That's probably the next design and why we have another Abrams rather than a clean sheet design now.

After watching everything but T-14's fail in combat over the last two years, and Chine announcing it has some wonder weapon that can stop tanks, is it time to re-think the tank. I don't think its time is past, more along the lines of something entirely different. Huge main guns may give way to drone launchers? I don't know, but the 70 ton monsters may have finally met their match?

It's good but only a stopgap until the optionally manned tank comes online. Along with advanced AI it will be a game changer. I 'm pleased that my time with the colours is over. The current and future battlefield is changing rapidly. My hard won skills are quickly becoming less relevant by the day.

My guess is that unmanned tanks are already being developed. One challenge would be how to securely control them.
@@thebestlayahead7331 Yeah, I would rather they have a Abrams that is simply armoured to protect the electronics and rounds and unmanned, if disabled, it can blow itself up.. This tank would be much much lighter and can move very fast as it does not have to protect any human.. Of course controlling it securely via radio is a challenge.. Some kind of short range laser comms systems so that basically the tank commander is offset from the tank maybe in another follow up vehicle from a distance.

All it does is catch up with modern threats, barely. It seems that the USA waits a very long time before fielding newer weapon systems than others. The Abrams X is that example. It might be too little too late. It still lacks some weapon systems like a indirect fire capability and only one Anti infantry weapon and most likely very limited anti missile system. The Armor is much lighter meaning survivability is dependant on a single system. The crew would need to evacuate quickly but Im not seeing that option. The front of the tank which is lightly protected now becomes a target.

Tanks are on there way out. Oh don't get me wrong they still have use, but not in the environment like the Israeli's are fighting in in Gaza's high density urban areas. Past wars are still dictating design. Maybe tanks should evolve into something totally different that integrates with front line soldiers remotely controlling them. What's the old saying; necessity is the mother of invention or something to that effect.

Israel don' use Abrams, only Merkava, the ones which has been sent to Ukr are Abrams A1 old gen from the 2000's The X is reserved for US forces first and it is not deplyed yet.
