Here we have ‘Monkey’ by Wu Ch’eng-en, published by the Folio Society. This book is translated by Arthur Waley, has a new introduction by former curator of Chinese collections at the British Library Frances Wood and is illustrated by Taiwanese American artist Mu Pan. This edition was published by the Folio Society in 2023.
The book comes with an illustrated slip-case. It is bound in fine blocked cloth in a nice dark blue color making the gold line-drawings look magical and enchanting. The book is Smyth-sewn in a slightly tight binding. The paper used for this edition is Abbey Wove paper. The paper is smooth and thick, and has a nice warm creamy-color. It is of course acid-free, pH-neutral. The text size is fairly large. The book is printed and bound by Gomer Press in Wales. There are seven illustrations by Mu Pan and one fold-out map. The illustrations are printed on slightly textured photographic paper with low amounts of gloss. The fold-out map is printed on wove paper in a grey-ish brown color.

So wonderful that they have used the Arthur Waley translation, it's a fabulous read, witty and subtle as well as teeming with wild adventures. But the covers, how beautifully engraved with gold, what exciting and colourful pictures and its long tall shape, a real tour de force in design. Thank you so much for showing this to us 👏

I don't know why I'm holding back on this. I've been a fan of the Monkey King since the awful English dub of the brilliantly animated film, "Saiyuuki" re-titled "Alakazam the Great" for American audiences.

I didn't hesitate to buy a copy when the Spring collection released. It's definitely one for art lovers. Although the size matches Three Kingdoms and Outlaws of the Marsh books I am still hoping that Folio will one day release the full modern translation of Journey in the West as I feel that would be a better accompaniment to the those Chinese classic sets.
I need to get hold of Three Kingdoms somehow 🤔
Hey, I'm just seeing. I just finished reading journey to the west volume one, but this is the abridged version so it is the shorter version right? So if I want to read the full story I need to get the other two right?
