- How do different microphone positions influence the sound of a guitar amp? Well, it turns out they change quite a lot 👀 #LEWITT #MakeYourselfHeard #microphones#guitar #guitarrecording #microphones #guitargear #studiorecording #recordingmusic #recordingstudio #homerecording #homerecordingstudio #musiccreation #musicgear #fender #lewitt

This is actually where most for the tone we recognize comes from, unlike what most people believe
True
Yep

Does the mic-cord somehow "replug" into the back of the amp or something? Is the Amp essentially reproducing a "Mic'd sound" from the mic being placed in front of it, or is the sound coming from another source rather than a reloop?
I hope you understand my question, because I don't understand how miking works, as dumb as it'll make me sound..
@@Strato13 All good man, we all start somewhere. The path goes computer-> interface -> mic cable ->microphone. You then place the microphone in front of the amplifiers speaker in the position that sounds best, I like to aim halfway between the speakers cone and cap, then place the microphone about 1 to 1 & 1/2 inch away. So lets say you move the microphones aim from that spot over to just the speaker cone, it changes the sound. Its just putting the mic in front of the amp in different spots to change sounds, you can even record the amp twice and mix the sounds together.
i would never have guessed that the first two positions sounded so different.
Surprising how that works!
And people still think string gauge and maple vs rosewood fretboards matters.
Difference in tone is like 98% the pickups, amp, speakers and mic placement. The other 2% is your imagination.
It might even be more than 2% 😂
It matters more on clean toned, but you're mostly right
frets is 70%. try some alu frets on your guitar. your gibson les paul will sounds like the 2 years old kid toys
A good setup also matters, bad intonation, high frets and truss rods all play a part as well
even minus the amp, most of the time
Considering the speak is WHERE the tone is, this video and any like would be a great point of topic. Thanks
Had no idea it was that drastic
Goes to show how many tonal options you have even with just one or two mics 😀
I wonder how the tuners influence the sound...
Ikr
Not really. Its mostly mic placement. Wood doesn't do anything with tone.
@@djsusan00 no, ya goof. They are making a joke that her guitar is significantly out of tune. Whoosh! 🙄
@@djsusan00that went over your head
The weight of the headstock significantly effects sustain, so if your tuners are really really heavy you can get like 200% more sustain. There's actually a 5/5 star praised product that clamps onto the headstock to add weight. Con? Really bad neck dive so you need to use a strap with really grippy shoulder pad. It's absurd how clamping a weight to the neck improves sustain until you learn the physics.
I love guitarists, first 5 top posts are like "Duh, of course" and "Tune your guitar". The rest of us are learning the practical effects of microphone positioning.
Right??
Wow, the difference is crazy
Please do more videos like this.
More electric guitar focused videos or more mic technique videos?
@@LEWITT-audio mic techniques or sound comparison videos in general. This video and ones like it are great to show people people that have no idea how much thought and work goes into making music sound the way it does.
Thanks for the feedback!
@@LEWITT-audio more vids with Maria shredding. unexpectedly delightful
We'll consider it ;)
That straight up position sounds like a direct input. I would of never guess that it was going to sound like that.👍
I would've said WOULD'VE.
yeah off axis mic’ing removes much of the low rumble end leaving room for the high end
Please try different brands or types of mics in those exact positions next.
Thanks for the input.
We needed this one 🤘
I liked all of the possession but the first and the last are my favorites
Finally!! Great demonstration!!
Thanks for watching!
Proximity effect. Distance is just as, if not more, important than the relative placement to the center of the dust cover.
True! Defintely changes the low end quite a bit
Thank you !!
dont forget its going trough audio interface aswell 😅 that make sound clear and diffrent then phone camera mic
Bro if she uses a camera mic, it's the mic that's the difference, the interface doesn't change it that much lol.
@@braceyourselvesfortruth2492 trust me it does , when i record from audio interface sound much much better then mob phone record ,
Hey. I recommend palm muting the strings at the bridge, makes the chugs tighter
are you saying we do not djent?
@@LEWITT-audio If it helps.
Epic short
TUNE THE GUITAR
good enough for punk rock 🤘😅
I like the sound. It's tastefully out of tune.
"Tastefully out of tune" is a genre-defining description 👌
Fix your ears. There's nothing wrong with the tuning. It's your ridiculous need to troll.
There are more tuning systems then your mind is accustomed to. Learn Music.
Distance and angle are very important details. I use IR’s cause I’m still bad at mic placement, or I need better mics?
Happy new year Lewitt and co. 🎉
That Engl sounds good at any angle
🤘
I made some IRs and I realised mic placement actually was kind of easy. The problem was EQing the amp to sound good through a cab/speaker/mic combination. Most of us EQ the amp paying attention to the room sound where we stand listening, while we should pay attention to the sound through the mic. IRs didn't have the handicap of being tied to any amp EQ. Try making your own, especially at different distances, I found it really insightful and fun!
What is that cabinet?
Angry bees
what about mixing a micd amp and a neural dsp plugin
You should try it!
What about placing the microphone pointed at the very center of the cabinet about 2 ft away?
Typically that will make the sound very bright and thin.
This is useful information even if you're using a sim!
If it offers mic placement options, yes absolutely!
@@LEWITT-audio Yes, a lot of them do these days, but it just adds to the indecision when trying to dial in the sound you want! At least people who watch this video won't just be waving it around and hoping for the best! 🙂👍
That second clip sounded so nasty.
Very simple let the grill and the mic grill kiss at the middle
What's the sound pattern on that mic?
MTP 440 DM is a cardioid mic
What microphone r u using?
MTP 440 DM
Straight up is the least muddy sounding
Yes, it has the maximum amount of treble.
1. Hardcore punk 2. Pop punk 3. Grunge 4. Thrash
God damn
That much?! Damn
You forgot to center the mic in between all four speakers…. 😂
Or mic the amp head...
Ramones in third posición Lol
It’s taller than me 💀
This is literally the basics of studio engineering, take any engineering class and signal to source is the first thing they talk about.
True!
Is that a bass cab?
That's a 🤘 cab
Is that a shur57 mic?
It's a LEWITT MTP 440 DM!
Turning a guitar up loud does not make it sound better it just makes you go deaf. Distortion hides lazy playing those who can sound badass with no or only a little distortion are more interesting yet rock just as hard listen to acdc those guitats have basically no distortion do yourself a favor and tone down the volume and gain you will be amazed at how your playing improves and recordings improve and sound more unique.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. How does this relate to different microphone positions?
@@LEWITT-audio 🙄guitarists
I'm not sure who else does this but i actually prefer placing the mic a couple feet away from the amp
Nice! That definitely has it's own unique sound. What kind of mic do you like best for distant miking?
whats her story?
are you hungarian?
Hi there. Not really. You have two more guesses ☺️
2 positions sounds best to me.
are you the girl form chicago music exchange
Just put it backwards
wow.. all this technology at your disposal .. only to make your playing sound as unclear as possible..
we are savages 😁
Hi, may I know why you place a mic in front of the cabinet? Isn't your guitar connected to the Amp Head anyways?
For recording
Guitar>amp >speakers>mic>recording.
Weird voice
Fake😊
Ask your boyfriend to tune your guitar
Try this again but with proper gain compensation, proper tuning, better tone, and maybe sweeten the pot with context within a mix, like, “why would you choose this position?”
Ya welcome
🤌🤌
