I know SNES development was difficult and expensive, but other simulation developers like KOEI were aware of the exact size of their niche markets, and could turn a profit from a limited run dry history lesson that otherwise would have been priced out of the console market.
Domark had the potential to market themselves as a prestige simulation developer, even if it meant fewer sales at a higher price point...surely, this would be a safer gamble for their long term brand than the SNES version's aggressive mediocrity?

I was checking out a few F1 games on both Genesis and SNES recently, and I noticed that Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing on SNES runs really smoothly while pushing some of the nicest and most consistent visuals of these F1 games on both consoles too.
Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing is a solid 30fps on SNES, full screen and updating everything on-screen each time. And it seems Newman-Haas Indy Car Featuring Nigel Mansell on SNES actually runs even smoother at a sort of 60fps, but only updating half of the on-screen elements each frame. I think that was the highest frame rate of any of the more standard-style F1 games I saw. F1 World Championship Edition shown here was actually the slowest I saw at 15fps-20fps.
Most of the Genesis F1 games run at around 20fps, like the first and second Monaco GP games (the first one is also in 256x224 resolution). Newman-Haas Indy Car Featuring Nigel Mansell on Genesis manage around 12fps-15fps, but there's some noticeable forced blank there and the dashboard takes up a large chunk of the screen. Formula 1 F1 on Genesis is around 12fps-15fps (or 15fps-20fps in Turbo mode), and there's some forced blank there too. Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing is a solid 30fps just like the SNES version, but it appears to have a little forced blank at the top and bottom of the screen looking at your other comparison video. And F1 World Championship Edition shown here on Genesis is 12fps-15fps.
And, if we go into Mode 7 racers like Super Mario Kart, Street Racer, Exhaust Heat, and F-Zero, we're getting full-screen 60fps on SNES. And these are without doubt some of best playing racing games of the era, so you get both the smoothness and the gameplay there.
So, in all fairness, SNES is holding up just fine when it comes to these racing games.
The base Genesis can definitely push more polygons around at a higher frame rate than the base SNES though. And having polygons is indeed interesting from a technical point of view. But generating proper 3D like this comes at a clear cost on these old systems that just weren't made for it ultimately, and it certainly doesn't hold up by today's standards. I think we're better off sticking with much newer consoles if we're going to focus on great 3D racing games to be honest.

They pulled all the stops presentation wise for the Genesis version. Intro animation was cool. Also very colorful for a Genesis game especially the background stills. Seeing your pit crew work on car as you adjust your race settings is a nice touch. The HUD was clear and easy to read with a fuel gauge. Plus the changing elevation, weather, 3d buildings, articulating suspension, and reflective mirrors. However I see what you mean about the gameplay. It's like the Genesis Madden NFL games where your pretty much playing the same game as last years but with a fresh new coat of paint to make it seem different.

This is the engine also used in Kawasaki Challenge. The SNES version of that game also has some 3D objects but less than the Mega Drive version and no sprite scaling or as advanced track markings.

SNES could do the engine that genesis is doing without a superfx chip. SNES cpu is comparable to the genesis cpu despite the clock speed difference, it would have to be coded to the snes and use the hirom cart or else the snes is not running at full clocks.
The Snes version is just a bad port or version, since the SNES can do better.
Tl/dr: It's up to a good developer to get the most out of the system.

@@StanislaoMoulinsky79 Not exactly, the genesis does have a sight clockspeed advantage and some math advantages but it’s not that big.
The Snes 65C816 is modified with addition of 16-bit multiplication and division units, which the stock doesn’t have.
65C816 is more efficient than 68000 heck the 6502 can be faster per clock or when clock to the same levels, but the 68000 has a lot more experienced coders and board support. It’s in a lot computers, arcades, and embedded platforms.
Yes devs for those 3d polygonal snes made bad software, especially if it was Atari port pawned off to 3rd party dev or if the main platform was genesis development. They’re won’t lazy, they had either no time or experience or both usually.

Like for the previous Mega Drive game, you're talking about a "3D engine" while it's not. It's not because there are some polygonal objects displayed that it means it's a 3D engine. It's very much a 2D engine, with some kind of sprite scaling and rotation. A 3D engine would allow you to turn around and drive the track in reverse (which this engine can't technically do), and without an additional chip like the SVP, the frame rate would be way too choppy for a racing game (look at LHX Attack Chopper for an example of how a real 3D engine runs on the stock Mega Drive). The game is still impressive for a Mega Drive game though. It's just not a 3D engine. Pseudo-3D I can agree with ;)
Also, would it be possible that the frame rate is significantly worse in the sequel because it's a PAL (50Hz) version, and you probably tested the NA (60Hz) version of the previous game ?
A comparison of both games in their PAL version would be nice :)

You can't conclude much of anything about the capabilities of the Genesis or SNES from this comparison, yet people try to all the time and it makes no sense. Stop choosing shoddy games from inept companies. I would also add that often times a game will be made for one system and then handed off to another company to be ported to something else. If a game wasn't built from the ground up for a particular piece of hardware it isn't going to be very good either. You would honestly be better off comparing what are considered to be some of the best Genesis racing games with some of the best SNES racing games.

That SNES port is horrible. I suspect that because the genesis had more raw power in CPU and an already developed 3D engine, it was easier to make the Genesis version look good. I suspect it would be a different story if the SuperFX chip was used for the SNES port.
It also always confused me why the same publisher had different intros and music for the same games on different systems. I understand that the tools to produce the content were different, but you would think they would work off the same basic roadmap or storyboard and share assets where possible. Instead, they always had entirely different teams working on these projects. Most of the platformer games got this right, but other ports were so different it made me wonder why they couldn’t come up with a better way to release the same title for multiple systems.
