    Criminal that we are not still heli-logging the Coast in a coordinated and sustainable way.
    RIP Best Coast: When coal is banned, all you'll have left is a few dairy cows to milk, and tourism. :(

    i was working at the patea dam site in the 90s when they helli log out of the back of the lake ., massive natives came out graeme carted it out big climb out of there, great history here be great to see if there was a video when they were there at patea, big russian chopper could here coming up the valley miless away.

    Now that IS the back of nowhere. Wicked stuff. Tap-dancing Payloader/Michigan, vodka drinking MIL chopper. How things got done. Didn't catch the name of the railway yard - does that line exist today please? Kind of doubt it. Thanks to you and Peter for sharing - I'll take more if it exists :-)

      Ill see if i can find out about that rail yard Peter. Inland Taranaki is a great place search up the Forgotten Highway

      Its the Whangamomona rail yard, the yard is still there but the line has been closed for years

    was the helicopter the Russian heavy lift jobs from Taupo, I saw those choppers with Alan beck some years ago at the Taupo airfield, The story Alan told us was that the pilots would lift heavy logs down Westland and wind the throttles up past where they should be and in a couple of events the rotor blades folded up dropping both chopper and load
