Jake, that’s what I’m talking about! That looks outstanding! I can definitely hear it your voice! That’s what you call motivation! What kind of gun did you use for sealer, base and clear? Good job brother.
Highspeed Noble's Garage thanks! I Used transtar sealer. Cromax base and clear. Warwick with 1.4 tip for sealer base and clear. I’d have to go look at the part numbers. If you want them let me know.
Jakes Shop Appreciate it brother. Looking the gun up now.
Highspeed Noble's Garage there are a couple different models. I’ll look mine up and let ya know
Highspeed Noble's Garage Warwick 881h. I have two. One I used for sealer and base. Other just for clear. Probably overkill two have two :). Used cromax 7175s for base and cromapremier 72500s for clear
Appreciate it brother. Going to look them up.
I'm a former professional auto painter myself, and I would say you've earned the right to be very proud of your hard work and a great first paint job. Congratulations!
Nice color ,I still have my 68 to paint can't wait to see more
@JakesShop ~~ I totally agree with leaving the doors ON when painting and masking them off the way you did! You did an EXCELLENT JOB PAINTING THIS CAR! The imperfections you were focused on are simply part of the reason the Buffing Stage is done on ALL paint jobs. No matter what, there will always be places that need to be perfected on every paint job, after the clear coats are on. Spraying a car is an exhausting job. Most people don't realize how much strength and endurance you need in your arms, shoulders, and upper chest/back to control the gun. Years ago, when my uncle had his own paint and body shop, he didn't initially have the money for a fancy "custom paint booth". His spray booth was set up much the same way you did yours and it worked great. One thing he did build to help him conserve muscle energy/endurance.....He built a simple "Deck Stand". He built it out of 2"x12" x 16 Ft long framing lumber and plywood. He ran the 12" sides perpendicular to the floor, so the 2" side of the board was resting on the ground; added cross braces 16" on center down the length of the box which was 24" wide overall. Then he added 3/4" plywood to the top as decking. This was just the right size to give him extra height/width stability to shoot the top and upper portions of the cars, down the full length of the vehicle...without straining his shoulders or altering the way he handled the spray gun. When he was ready to move down to the lower part of the cars, the Deck Stand was simply flipped up on its side against the wall. He mounted a couple of 2" x 4" off cuts to the studs that swung down and anchored the Deck Stand on its side, firmly out of the way until he needed it again.
Thanks for sharing your experience and progress!! ~~Christy~~
Love the mention of My Friend Pete! Learned alot from that dude!
Great job for you first paint job!
it's nice to see someone on here that is willing to show where they screwed up. this is how we learn from each other. if you wet sand it with 600 and do one more light coat of clear you will be amazed how good it looks.
Almost at this stage with my 68. My first time also, I'll be happy if mine turns out as well as yours did. I'm more of a mechanic and will be glad when I can get to that stage. This has been a long learning process, each step (at least for myself) understanding there are no shortcuts, and so much more to painting a car than I had first realized. Thanks for tutorial. Your car looks fantastic. ((sub'd))
@@Rick-O-Shay60 appreciate the comment yeah I wasn’t much of a painter, but I had a lot of buddy’s with experience to guide me.
@@Rick-O-Shay60 and yeah, there’s reasons why shop will charge 20 grand or more to do bare metal and paint a car with this quality or to this quality
All that hard work is looking awesome 👍
thanks!
Very nice!. Once it’s buffed you’ll be amazed. Nice first one
Very Cool Jake!
Love it
Dang I like this channel glad I found it
Very nice Jake. Looks really good. That sealer went down great too.
Dam good job 👍
Great to see the color on the car! Great job!
Lee Kielblock thanks!
Your first time looks better than some people that are in the biz, I've seen a lot in my 40 years working in shops. you should be proud.
@gunther Hoffman. Thanks much appreciated! I’m very happy with it as well.
Jake for the first time looks amazing iam getting to do my 68 this summer, nice video A+
Looks awesome brother great job
I had a great time filming and helping out. It was overall a really good day, bro. The paint came out great for your first car! Nothing a good cut-n-buff won't fix.
Fred Niess yep after a good cut and some guidance from Someone like you she’ll be a diamond.
For the first time you did an excellent job
Love pete.
Great video
Hard to believe it was his first time doing a full paint job. The car looks fantastic, well done!
Thanks!
Jakes Shop, and thanks for sharing all the details and steps of the build, top notch work across the many video’s and video production work for this project. One of the best series on CZcams!
Not too many people can say they painted their own car. Great job! And I see what you did with the jambs now.
Awesome first paint job!
Dad's Toy Garage thanks!
You did a fantastic job overall. Buffing will make it perfect! For the runs, try the blade method. I show it in 74 Chevy Nova Update - Cut and Buff -1- Cutting the peel (Literally) Ep 104. Around 4 min mark.
i think the car looks great. would love to do that to !!!
Great video always a stressful day when it finally is painting day. Something to keep in mind you should tack cloth your masking. Things will settle on it and get stirred up into the air when the spray passes by it!
That looks like so much fun , I would love to restore some awesome car . Im sure it cleaned up well . The problem is it might be to pretty to drive around like a normal car
Nothing that won't sand out. I like the SS hood, most run cowl induction. I liked it black, but looks good.
Great video. And great 1st time job. I'm hopefully getting ready to spray my 71 Impala soon. It's going to be my 1st whole car. Plus I'm doing a custom candy paint job.🤦🏿♂️ Keep up the great work.
Going for a candy on the first complete. That will be fun. :) Sounds like a great project. Glad you liked the video!
Awesome job....awesome color!!! Well done young man! One thing to keep in mind about that "new" paint shaker you have.....always put your body filler in there too! Shake it bout 5 minutes, it'll be warm from the vibration, and it'll spread and sand far more better than straight out of the can :)
Great tip
Great paint job.. wow.
2014 Corolla thanks!
@@JakesShop I've tried painting a few times, it's so easy to screw up, but you have to keep trying to get better.
Great job !!!! runs are ok for 1st time painting !!!! SO what rt !
You got it! a little work with a razor blade and some cutting and buffing and all is well. Thanks for watching.
You should get Jimmy to Buffett! Seriously, great video. Says a lot about you that you shared the few drips as well as the generally awesome job that you achieved on your first go. Well done.
The Fig thanks!
Jake you did a great job! You should have seen mine! Thankfully wet sanding and buffing saved me. I started at 10 in the morning and finished after 7 that night, I never dreamed it would take that long. I was like a zombie when I was done but I was happy, runs and all.
The only thing I noticed was you didn't have a torpedo heater going to help it dry...:)...remember that one?
toolmike100 ya! yeah I opted out for a flame on in the background :)
Good job for a beginner
The car came out great.Be very proud you did a great job
Nice job taping the jams from one CZcamsr to another
Mustang Rebuilder thanks!
Finally lol this video made me happy brother glad to see some paint on it and i know this sounds crazy but use a razor blade and get most of those runs before you buff it out looks awesome
Tw1st3d-0ne thanks! Fred is going to come over here one of these days and show me exactly how as well as cutting it and buffing to show quality. We’ll probably video it. :).
@@JakesShop respect brother looks good like the color its different im sure its going to pop in the sun
Dude, if this is the 1st time painting a car, well you better quit while you are ahead! That thing looks marvelous!!! So a couple of runs in the clear coat... Wet sand them out and on with the day. I hope my truck turns out that good
Thanks Terry! Someday I would like to paint another project but that's a few years out after I make my shop bigger and build a custom booth in it. Good luck with your project!.
When I paint mine ima do black with silver racing stripes
Joe dirt said, that sheet will buff out...
U did great just tune in ur fluid flow next time and air pressure up some
Looks awesome! Awesome video! Curious to know if you had any overspray problem on the outside of the barn once the fan exhausted the paint and clear coat? Im looking to do the same concept however i would have to vent out towards the front of the garage and i really dont want to get overspray on the doors or the siding. Thanks
Thanks! Yeah. My old barn is just that.. Old. And dark red. I But I never noticed any overspray outside that stuck to anything besides the grass. but it was mostly just dry dust type of thing and was un-noticeable after a rain or two. I'm also pretty lucky because 90% of the time the wind is blowing from the south and the fan is on the North side of the shop.
@@JakesShop Excellent...I guess if I invest in a good filtration system for blowing out the paint/clear then i shouldn't have much of a problem with changing the color of the house or having a shiny driveway...thanks for the tip and great work with the video. Keep up the awesome work!
Jake good first time....but you move the camera too fast as were inspecting the paint. Was a bit crazy....let us linger over how good it looks
Much thanks paul!
Awesome job. I'm doing the same thing about a month behind you. Here in Puyallup. What sealer did you use? I shop at the same place.
petemoss100 olympia. Wa. I used transtar stuff and it was awesome!
What brand of sealer did you use? Im alittle confused about the sealer process. Some people say that sealer is just a wet primer that has more reducer in it?
Chuck Beaumont. I used Transtar quickseal. Yes some guys use it on bare metal before spraying primer. And some primers are not made to be shot onto bare metal so you have to use something on the bare metal as you need a metal etching product to grab onto the metal for the primer to stick. Problem with sealer is if you let it setup/harden for more then a day or so it gets to hard and your supposed to scuff it before painting over it. This is why I chose a 2k primer that was direct to metal. Then shot sealer before paint for two main reasons. It’s tinted closer to your paint color. Like darker or lighter to help with paint coverage. And also fills in micro scratches from your final sand.
What did you use for fans/ventilation? Positive or negative pressure?
Negative
Hey Jake, I’m building an engine similar to what you have. Did you have any problems with that intake making contact with the hood? Any other issues? I have a 68 Camaro with 2” cowl hood. Any response would be appreciated, thanks
Nope plenty of room.
Hey man. Hey man. Hey man. Hey? Why didn't you use a DeKup when you spray?
Mainly due to cost. I hear they are great and a time saver but since I don't paint that often I opted not get into the DeKup system. If an whenever I decide to paint more often or after I get a real booth I'll probably go that route.
Looks great how did the booth do during the clear coat ? Did it clear it out pretty well or were you standing in a fog ? Still kicking around doing a booth like you did.
It cleared out great with my setup. Felt like a commercial cross draft booth. I would recommend using automotive painting plastic. It's has it's draw backs as you need to tape where you staple it since it's so thin. Also tears easily if you drag a tool across it or have your kids poking there fingers in it constantly... Good side of it is it's easy to repair with tape. And it's static keeps dust clinging to it so it doesn't bounce or float off into your work like regular plastic would. Only thing i wish i would have done differently was have lights down low so i could see down lower along the rockers. it was quite a trick to get those areas. Started to ware my headlamp while painting..
Jakes Shop thanks, I wear a head light and I just bought a gun light so we will see how that goes thanks 😊
Oh yeah even better. I saw those gun lamps. Probably worth the money if you ask me :) be curious how you like it. Post a video when you do. :).
Jakes Shop will do
Do you have any footage of the booth build? What exhaust fan and filters were used? How much filter area was built in? Saw a quick glimpse of it in the video. Looks like a good setup to emulate. Thx, keep the great content going.
clearcoat should be applied as a fine mist.not heavy.
What color# What clear are you using ?🔥🔥
Thanks. It’s in the comments under high speed noble. I replied.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can you tell me what the paint code/name is for what you put on the camaro?
It’s a 2018 Volvo color. I used croma base product. Flamico red.
whats the kolor called?
I want you to do mine
@cooter Brown much appreciated man. Unfortunately I don't do cars for other people really other then a few close friends here and there. Still working to get my 68 wrapped up possibly by the end of summer. we'll see. If your taking about your 69 it looks like a very solid car. Nice find!
@@JakesShop well ill be looking for more updates on your beautiful car. Keep up the good work brother.
What color is that
Flimaco red. 2018 Volvo color
What color
Flamico red i believe it was a 2018 volvo color
You know anyone who can louver a hood
Steve Vermillion that’s old school tech. I’ve heard of guys around that have an old machine that could do it but I haven’t looked into it for awhile
I may know someone who does know. If i find out i'll forward you the info.
I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler with an in-line 6 and they tend to retain heat in the engine compartment. Trying to eliminate the heat...I am old school.
