5 Signs It's Your ADHD, Not Laziness

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (or ADHD, for short) is a condition that affects your focus. It can make focusing on everyday tasks and routines challenging. For years, people with ADHD were labeled as lazy, procrastinators, flaky, or irresponsible. These labels only produced shame and prevent those with ADHD from seeking help. To help reduce the stigma, we made this video!
Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes and not intended for self-diagnosis. If you believe that any of the points apply to you, please visit a therapist for a proper diagnosis.
Reminder: Do not let these labels prevent you from seeking treatment. Remember that these labels, whether they plagued you in the past or follow you in the present, do not represent who you are. You are more than that. So, if you ever need help, please reach out to a medical health professional for assistance.

don't be scared of anxiety, this is why you get panick attacks. Embrace it when it gets too much and it should go down. On the other side of your max level of anxiety is euphoria believe it or not, the nirvana state of mind.
Emotions are much more simple than we think, but it's a double edge sword attribute. Love and hate are the same chemical, anxiete and laughter, fear and bliss. They come in pairs, the way they manifest is all about how we perceive things. To me true "happiness" is being able to control and know how, where and when to let go of your negative emotions. So that you don't have to live with constant lingering anger or anxiety, every single day, for the rest of your life.

Relatable. Except that I am actually really good with money but for the same reason. I hyperfocus on my bank statements and have systems set up for bills, and check them constantly. Even when I have a splurge, I focus on how i'm gonna pay it off. But. as I mentioned in another comment, my impulse control is so bad in other ways, I can set a timer for 15 minutes, and 20 minutes later realize the alarm has been going for 5 minutes, and I only got 3 minutes into the scheduled task and done 5 other unrelated things meanwhile. With work stuff, I feel overwhelmed because I'm trying to please everyone and work on all the projects at once. If I'm doing this project, I feel like I should be doing That project, but when I'm doing That project, I feel bad I'm not working on this project. and email notifications feel like taser arrows, cuz i just know something has gone wrong to ruin all my efforts. Do you have dreams about the work you have to do?

My brain has a natural tendency to get distracted by imagining things, even at times when it should pay attention. I can concentrate on tasks but I often need music to focus, otherwise it is impossible. I have dozens of unfinished personal projects and sometimes when I focus on something the rest of the world disappears completely. I don't know if I could have a mild form of ADHD or it's just because of the way I grew up, I used to spend a lot of time alone, so I was killing the time imagining things. I don't really have a problem doing important tasks, just personal ones, like projects or TV series.

As a child, I was in trouble often for being distracted, not focusing unless I was interested in subject( hated Math) and bothering other students. I was labeled lazy, disruptive, no conforming and a pain in the arse. One nun in particular, gave me things to do physical things, that warded off my disruptiveness. BTW..I usually was done with my classwork way before others, so I was bored. This nun was way before her time, as punishment was the answer in the 60s and early 70s. Procrastination was my middle name and disorganization...boy was my desk a mess...still is, but now it's an organized mess. I took up writing early on which seemed to help...still does. My active mind was full of ideas I quickly turned into stories( this started at age 7) I feel overwhelmed so often that I go into my do nothing mode and feel exhausted...
It wasn't until college I was quickly diagnosed with ADD...my concentration was awful and had to read reread a paragraph 2x before I could comprehend it..I'm also a fast reader and was tested at 5th grade to be 12th grade + reading level. One hobby was to read the dictionary daily, to learn new words. I used that tactic with my elderly patients to find a new word daily and it became the Word Of The Day, where we would find ways to use it all day long.
As a Psych nurse( retired) and Spec Needs teacher, I used many of my tactics with patients. They all worked.
Now I'm much older and my concentration is way worse and fuzzy brain is often. I was on Adderall for awhile in college, so I'm back on it now.
It does help but wears off quickly. I can see the difference in all areas when I'm on it.

I am 65 and Im pretty sure I have ADHD even without a formal diagnosis. But we shall see.
I was looking up autism/Aspergers syndrome and it also mentioned ADHD. Talk about a ‘lightbulb moment’. I tick nearly every box and one of my constant things to say is, ‘I know I should do such and such but something always stops me’ even though I desperately want to do whatever it is.
Procrastination is my middle name and for decades, I have moved through life with a stream of unfinished projects in my wake. I dropped out of university in my second year despite the fact I was getting good marks on the assignments I HAD managed to finish. I just couldn’t ‘get my act together’, and I was ashamed and viewed myself as lazy and good for nothing as I always have.
And in 2007 I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder. But I’ve known for some time that there is ‘something else’ overriding that dx.
My ex used to say that my slowness would lead to my downfall and despite him being a rotter, he’s been proved right. I could have had a short story published but procrastination got in the way. I nearly lost my home but.....well, you get the picture. And the list goes on and on.
So I’m seeing my GP next week and asking for a referral to a specialist. I hope I am successful, but if not, I shall go private despite the cost (I am in England where most treatment and consultations are free on the NHS)
Good luck to anyone out there who is seeking a diagnosis late in life. Whatever has gone before has NEVER been your fault.

Girl, you and I are from the same mode.
I am finally a writer/author after yrs of procrastination, 1 story published ( my first submission) and every English teacher up to college, telling me I'm gifted in writing.
I too have Bipolar ll, and always knew there was something wrong. Meds helped alot back in the day( age 50 diagnosed) but nothing works much now. Many have a combo of BP and ADD. I'm very depressed mostly with few manic or slightly manic...
Finally, the pandemic and a leg amputation has led to me writing FT and submitting again. I have alot of work ahead of me as writing is a very compelling job...the writing part is a breeze but putting on a laptop, editing, formatting and learning electronic submissions.. total hell.

I have heard about the word adhd. But I just know what is ADHD in recent week. I always thought that I am a lazy person but after know much about this, suddenly I can relate to this. This is my symptom:
    1. Forgetful. Sometime when people give information, people can relay that perfectly. But I can't. Most of the time, when people relay message, I just remember part of it or forget about it all. Even the message was just relayed 5 second ago. Also, I constantly forget what I'm going to do next (ex: I go to my room to take my phone, but when I enter the room I forgot what I'm supposed to do) and this happend daily.
    2. Hyperfocus and focus easily distracted. Sometimes when I'm on my computer or I'm reading a book, I can't hear people talking and calling to me. My focus often distracted and I can't get focus at one thing at a time. Sometimes I'm working on project the next second I'm watching CZcams. 🤦‍♀️
    3. Sleep schedule is messed up. It has been few years that I can't sleep early. Even when I'm doing nothing, I still can't fall asleep. If I sleep early, usually I can't have a good sleep because I often wake up suddenly. I also have vivid dreams.
    4. Lethargic. I often feel like doing nothing because I doesn't have the mood to do so. Sometimes it's going for days. Laying in my bed. It was like my soul is gone.
    5. Hard to follow schedule. I have made schedule once, but following the schedule seems like it's never gonna happen. But within last minute, I can working under pressure.
😔There is so many symptom that I can relate to ADHD. If people say 10 symptom, I might as well have all of them. I'm planning to see psychiatrist next month. Wish me luck 🍀

I have had this for decades now and haven't really been aware until 2010. The BEST thing you can do, and it's the same thing Joe Rogan did a long time ago when he got into martial arts, is find the thing that interests you the most (no matter what it is) and pursue after it. Along the way you should discover your life's purpose. Joe Rogan does a podcast that is world renowned now, but if it wasn't for the martial arts he pursued which led to commentating for the UFC which led to his TV shows which led to said podcast, we wouldn't know who he is. When you find something that absorbs your focus you can excel at it and become top tier, and there is ALWAYS room for people in any market space that are top-tier regardless of how the economy is doing. If it doesn't hold your attention, you have to let it go; and that can be difficult in the short term, but the long term pay off is higher than you can possibly imagine.

I was told by my parents about my conditions when I was really young and i realized later on that I got bullied unnecessarily for these traits. Some of my classmates thought I was too stupid to learn, or was intentionall trying disturb class. This caused alot of inner turmoil for me, I started to feel anxious of what people may say or think about me if I made simple errors or mistakes. Like if I was walking or moving too fast. I didn't want pity, I hated it but I didnt want to use it as an excuse for my short comings. I was always envious of my classmates for being able to do so well in multiple things while it seemed like I just kept struggling to get the basics. Thanks to some breif therapy, help from my mom and a real friend who wanted to help me improve, I got significantly better with managing it overtime. In the end, I hope anyone else who has this condtion completely believes that they can live a normal life. One where they can improve over and over again.

I was visiting this person for self-harm and even suicidal ideations and a long lasting deppresion but they where digging up an entirely different issue. Me myself have always suspected I might have ADHD but the old sturdy stereotypes about ADHD kept me from actually believing I could have it. Only in recent years when ADHD in adults have become more a thing have I suspected that I had a different form of ADHD than the very stereotypical ADHD kids in my class. I really have to thank you Psych2Go for bringing this valuable knowledge to the people in a beautifully animated and fun way. Even if the subject is more serious than just entertainment it's still fun to watch.

I totally did not randomly find this channel in my sub list, click this video and not even watch half of it because I was reading comments, all while looking for another channel that I subbed quite a while ago.

I see now ! And I thought I was being unproductive often because I was lazy but I do get distracted A LOT (especially when I am on my computer or outside). Pretty much all my life, I have struggled with organization and I would get scolded every school year by my mom because of her tendency to always be organized, no matter what. Therefore, I just felt defective in part because of that.
I was diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) of the autistic type as a child and I learned recently that a comorbidity existed between ASD and ADHD, also, they did say in my diagnosis that I had a terrible lack of focus and organization so I don't know, since I relate to all of the signs I may have ADHD, I guess I will have to check it out myself later in my life.
Anyway, thank you for this informative video as always.

Definitely a sign, been really doubting myself recently, always thought I had ADHD but never ever took it further than a self assessment..

Omg the alarm tip, I always use alarms. When the alarms sounds I simply thank my past self because I totally forget what I needed to do.

I sat still in the most inhuman position watching this video and still sat more still then I would if I watched a school provided video, not only that, I actually learned more than I would from a school provided video

to all of them but I'm also diagnosed so no wonder :D still, I love to watch these videos and to feel related to.
Important to notice is that it's not always ADHD/ADD but the way you grew up or something else. So please don't diagnose yourself! When you feel you might have it and it makes your life feel problematic like you really struggle with it, you should try and see a psychiatrist. Not everyone knows about ADHD yet, there are a few that specialise in it and I warmly recommend to find them and talk to them :) Even more a reminder to just do it even though hardly anyone else would say that. ADHD is hard to diagnose because it overlaps with many different psychological problems or character traits and it's hard to differenciate (especially when it's ADD). Whether you have it or not, don't give up on yourself (or if you do, you can get to the nice part of life you deserve!)
