Ukraine War: key Crimea bridge hit in serious setback to Putin and Russia

  • It's the only road and rail link between the Crimean peninsula and Russia: a vital artery for military supplies to its soldiers occupying the region and fighting in southern Ukraine.
Who blew up part of the 12-mile Kerch bridge and how is as yet unclear. What is not in doubt is that it is another serious setback for Vladimir Putin.
This report contains scenes some might find distressing.

They are deliberately making a veil to detonate a bomb there themselves and then blame Russia for this. It is obvious how Russia is fighting, even the bridges in Ukraine are intact, as is the entire civilian infrastructure. But the Ukrainians are bombing everything behind them, and bridges, and even nuclear power plants. not to mention the bombing of their own fellow citizens. This media noise is a cover for a future operation under the false flag of Russia.

    Civil engineer, here.
Judging from photos and videos of bridge damage this was a "controlled demolition" which in practice is akin to a demo contractor setting pin-point charges at weak points of bridge and then setting them off in a controlled, orderly manner.
As far as weak points. Weak points are the places where the span segment, I.e. deck, connects to supports, I.e. bridge piers. Charges were attached to bolts, gusset plates connecting decks to piers.
So what do I think happened ?
This was a special forces mission which used combat sappers. They used the advantage of a long overall span of bridge as a way to evade detection. Russia has no resources or will to adequately patrol entire span, they have no discipline to properly protect this chokepoint. Their navy ran away back to Russian mainland after naval defeats so marine patrols of bridge suffered as result.
Special ops used cover of night to setup. And set off charges remotely at opportune time when fuel train was passing by and very early in morning to avoid civilian casualties. 3 dead is a small price to pay.
Do you agree or disagree? And why.

number of EMD units are in Kherson. It would make sense that they are using them. Especially as they need 4 crew members and unit manning is therefore different. I think your point that older equipment is accurate, but in this case, I think the volume of T-62 is related to the units involved.

If you look at the surveillance video at the time of the explosion, the force and fire of the blast moved upwards from below. Originally (after the car/truck bomb theory), it was speculated that the explosives were in a boat. But an explosives expert more accurately guesses there were charges already placed on the road and rail structures by special ops, detonated by remote command.

Between the pylons and the road above. All reinforced bridges are very hard to destroy. It would be much easier to use the bridge's weight against itself. Lift the bridge off it's supports, with explosion's underneath the bridge. Set the explosion so, as the section lifts and shifts, the force of the explosion is redirected at the train-tracks and the passing train. Brilliant. I would love to know (exactly) who is responsible for all of Ukraine's brilliant moves and planning, of late. Obviously the west. Probably the U.S. but exactly who or what organization. Brilliant.

But the Ukrainians are tricksters par excellence at this point, and after all, this is a hi-tech war with awesome Western weaponry, training, and Intel. Putin has an off-ramp, and always has had one: he should resign his post, retire to his dacha, write his memoirs, no doubt blaming everybody except himself, and consider he's got off very lightly in comparison with the tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians whose lives he's ruined. Of course he won't do that. The best that Russia can hope for is a military coup by middle-ranking officers for whom realism is more important than tsarist-era ideology, and in that case Putin's off-ramp will come screaming at him from the barrel of a gun.

      I disagree about the off-ramp.
Once he loses his grip on power, criminal investigations into countless murders, embezzlement of enormous amounts and corruption will point at him as the man who committed, commissioned or at least authorized those crimes.
And even if he was lucky enough to get a very generous successor, the new government would be under tremendous international pressure to hand him over for starting a war of aggression and for ordering or condoning war crimes.
If he's unlucky, he'll end like Nicolae Ceausescu or Muammar al-Kadhafi.

Too bad the bridge was not damaged a lot more. Good psychological effect for sure. Taking out a large bridge completely is not a trivial thing.
As for replacing generals, well I guess there is much to be said, but remember that USA replaced a lot of high ranking officers - generals - during WWII and it could be said the performance of US generals was better in WII than in later wars (listen in to Thomas E. Ricks on this for example). Many generals were rotated, true, and some wer relieved due to illness, but still some were relieved to optimize performance with no injuries or illnes involved. Now high ranking generals does not seem to relive other generals, civilian does.

The security is on high alert over the bridge now , it will be more difficult to reduce it to rubble.

Great job! I would also be happy to see more of the bridge go under for a larger set back but that it is good delay to Putin.
