  • Have you been curious about the question "are lights with more lumens better?" but couldn't find the answer? This video will be a huge help! Here, KC breaks down what lumens actually are which will give you a good understanding of how to analyze the performance of a light when you're shopping for a new off-road light. In addition, we cover other terms such as Lux and Candela that are often used to quantify the output of light. Understanding all three of these terms and looking at these specifications will give you a great understanding of that light!

    It’d be nice to have a list of generic purposes for certain lights. I see guys with spot patterns for the side of their rig for camping and a flood for their bumper mounted bar. For example:
    Ditch light preference: flood with X lumens, X candela, X LUX.
    Forward facing light: flood/spot combo with X lumens, X candela, X LUX.
    Etc.
    Some sort of generic list like that and then of course everyone can do/get what they want after that. But I think a generic list would be a great starting point ESPECIALLY for all the new people getting into off-road who ask the same questions all the time on Facebook.

    i want to buy a led headlight so what should the lux be?

  • @Dr_Xyzt
    @Dr_Xyzt Před 4 lety

    So, how are you computing the Lux and candelas for certain lights?
    For example, when I buy a FLEX fixture from you folks, I get that bright spot, then the dimmer peripheral region. If I need 500 lux to see something, and the fixture has a 600 lux peripheral band with a 1500 lux spot that holds a pretty solid 1500 lux throughout that circular region, then you have a lot of marketable light for that fixture.
    -- Sometimes, I inclined to ask for a cardioid lux map. But really, a picture of the beam on a wall with a measuring tape is really all we need to pick a great beam.

    I understand lumen and lux but not a candela 😞. Anyway, can I use smartpone's light sensor to measure my flashlights lux count? All I do is putting my phone 10 meters from my flashlight?🤔

  • @jonmanilenio
    @jonmanilenio Před rokem +1

    Candela = Lux x distance squared. So candela is the strength of a light hitting a surface at a specified distance. For example, a light measured at 1000 lux from a distance of 10 meters has a candela rating of 100,000 candela.

  • @richardmarkinco1475
    @richardmarkinco1475 Před 3 lety

    So if I understood this correctly, the best light would be one that is high in lumens, a large LUX value, and a high Candela amount. Right?

    A metric you can use is candela per lumen ratio. You see that one light has 50,000 candela and the other has 10,000, but they both have 5,000 lumens. I'm sure a high quality lighting company like KC Hilites lists the candela of every light along with lumens, right? More candela for the same lumens is a spot, and fewer is a flood. Lux tells you nothing. Candela is lumen per steradian, or degree of an arc. This is also know as throw. The longest throw flashlight in the world right now puts out about 700 lumen, like a 2 C-cell flashlight, but it has a candela rating of over ten million candela and can throw over 3 and a half miles. Lumens tell you how many photons and candela tells you how tightly they are packed. You need both.

  • @CaptnHampton22
    @CaptnHampton22 Před rokem

    Seems strange then that we use Lumens and even Candela for flashlight ratings. Isn't Lux more helpful? Candela makes sense when a lot of light is being produced over a huge area in all directions - you wanna know how much is getting on your book vs. the back wall. Lumens makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint. But shouldn't we all care about more about Lux for flashlights? (very specifically speaking about flashlights).
