- WTF Happened To This Celebrity? - The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!
For over two decades Mel Gibson was the king of Hollywood, from his launch to stardom in the MAD MAX movies and the LETHAL WEAPON franchise, to his acclaimed and successful shift behind the camera with BRAVEHEART and THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. But his battles with booze and inner demons eventually got the best of him, and his shining star was all but extinguished after publicized drunken tirades in 2006 and 2010. Although he has since returned as both actor and director, he retains only a fraction of his former A-list power. Gas up the V8 and find out “WTF Happened to MEL GIBSON!”

His villain in Expendables 3 was actually the best part of that movie, he was really menacing, him and Van damme were great villains in that trilogy
@Nolan's Innocent Seagal was suppose to be the main villain in E3, but he turn it down, and also Willis is replaced with Ford for being too greedy
Royal dano was tribute to a bad man 1956 with James Cagney
@@itachi-kun7736
And thank god for that...
100%
That was a bad movie but Gibson was awesome and by far the best thing about it.
This got me wondering... Are we not allowed to say stupid things, anymore? Do we always have to say the right thing and parrot current opinion? We're people not robots.
Drunkenly too. Jews r cool too Mel just remember!
J's have been thrown out of every country in history hmm i wonder why?
Please inform yourself about the difference between stupid and offensive.
@@markussitzmann Offense is taken, not given. As for stupid, I'd say stupid is two guys arguing on CZcams. Mel's comments were very unpleasant, and I'm saying we've all made stupid comments that someone will find offensive. Assuming it's not a constant barrage of hate, let's move on.
@@FatNorthernBigot to imply someone cannot be purposefully offensive is silly
Mel Gibson is a real real person, warts, scars, sugartits and all. He is human, unlike most freaks in Hollywood and he gets back up ready to bring on the pain to provide us with moving, thought-provoking and funny-as-hell entertainment. Keep it coming, Mel. We love ya! ❤️
He is by far my favorite actor, he can make me cry and laugh at the same time. Great presence and great talent. His work ethic is outstanding. Even at his lowest point I never lost faith that he could redeem himself. I play his movies over and over...they never get old. May he keep acting and directing....
I have collection of his moves and keep watching them . He is the best

Pretty cool how Robert Downey Jr. stuck by Mel when, years later after Mel insured him out of his own pocket, RDJ was given an award of some sort and chose to have Mel be the one who presented it to him in front of everyone. And he then spent the entirety of his acceptance speech asking that Mel be forgiven. This moment was mentioned at the end of the vid but I thought I'd go into a bit more detail because it's just such a goddamn heartwarming moment to see actors actually stand up for each other for a change.
RDJ stuck by his Avengers costars telling cheap Marvel to give them a salary increase or bye . Marvel did .
Not all actors are like that, but those two - they are sure great people.
It's always great when friends/fam have your back.
@@robzilla730 No not all people are like that but faith and respect is what forms alliance and friendship.
Mel Gibson in the MCU? Everyone else is... :)
He is a legend, as actor but even more as director. He is the complete package.
Absolutely he is the best of the best ever ❤🎉
I fell in love with him when he was on the Sullivans (our tv series regarding a family living through the First WW.) Then he was in Gallipoli and Tim and Mad Max. He was cinema gold in Australia way back then. Such a good looking man and brilliant actor.
He might not be the best person, but he's far from the worst. Hollywood really needs good talent like him so we can have something good to watch besides most of crap they call entertainment these days.
Thing is he said all that stuff while out of his mind on drugs and alcohol . I know lots of wonderful human beings who say nasty and stupid things when they're under the influence. The difference is they're not famous and nobody cares. Everyone has a dark side and controversial ideas and thoughts . The only people who think they're perfect are the woke/radical feminist brigade and those are some of the most racist, sexist, misandrist and hateful people you'll ever encounter
He called out communist pedos long before Project Veritas did, and that's why Hollywierd, the communist pedophiles, black listed him and canceled him for it. But he's not the "best person". Just saying, not an attack on you.
He's a good actor, but far from the best. They are a lot of great actors who could've done just as good if not better in the roles that he played. If the world had never heard of Mel Gibson, there would still be plenty of great cinema. You don't have to be an axe murderer to be excomunnicated from Hollywood.
Nah he's literally as bad as it gets.
@@-pROvAK read a history book
Growing up in the 80's - 90's, there were a few actors that were in God mode, Mel was one of the best of them.
Well said.
Also in the early 2000s
@@Locadel2003 yeah, I hindsight it's weird to think they ended his prime years because of some drunk remarks and a phone call with his eastern Europe girlfriend.
I agree, I think Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise are the only actors that hit it big in the 80's that have been really consistent and still putting out great stuff.
Right bro 👍
Jesus…..Dude has SOOOOOOOO many great films. One of the best actors of my lifetime and a great director aswell.
Honestly the man himself is as epic and iconic as any of his characters. And one day no doubt, someone will play him in a movie. Just hope that person will do him justice!
Depends on qui fund and distribute the movie
Oh God, I hope not.
Mad Max and Lethal Weapon movies were what I remember the most about Mel. He never failed to provide the best of his acting skills. I thoroughly enjoyed many of these sequels during a time when my mom was still alive and she had HBO. (She died in 1989 from cancer at age 42)
BTW, the host in this video is really funny!! I enjoyed watching this very much! Thank you for bringing all of these fantastic memories back!
So very true ❤ Sorry about your mom 😪
Braveheart gave me goosebumbs!
Mi mum just died, gang.
Mel Gibson is a genius wether he’s in front of a camera or behind one! The guy truly has brought us many masterpieces.
He lost half of his $$$ to someone who did not deserve it, though.
@@antonboludo8886 Did that happen with his crazy cunt of an ex-wife?
He is a fucking lunatic legend. I love him for that.
100%
Mel Gibson has a pathological hatred of the British.
His films are the same formula of British bashing.
His portrayal of historical events are great cinema but biased to his own pompous bigotry.
In the movie the Patriot where the evil British are trying to recruit Mel's slaves with the promise of freedom they proclaim they are already free and just want to stay on Mel's plantation. Awww aint that sweet .
Mel Gibson is one of those actors i can watch over and over, The Patriot, Mad Max, Ransom, Braveheart, Maverick...he has such a presence, such a charisma, even his bad movies are watchable because of him, one of my favourite actors of all time.
And yes i am gonna mention Lethal Weapon, god i love this movies, watched more than 40 times and still always entertained, i love it more every time...
@Oodles of Noodles Hahahahaha I agree, I was like hold on hold where is Lethal wea... Oh there it is! 😁
Who cares.
@@DensilGrant I do
Absolutely. Talking about Mel without mentioning Lethal Weapon or Mad Max is impossible. And that makes us 2 Arthur. I've seen Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 at least 100 times. Mel is one of the best actors and directors out there. Period. To me his best movie will always be Braveheart.
Dont forget the legendary Mel Gibson phone calls between him and Oksana. They're pure dark comedy gold.
Like him or not, he sure makes great films.
Braveheart will forever be one of my favorite movies of all time ❤️
I very rarely watch longer YT videos but I've always been a fan of Mel so clicked on this and 53.5 minutes disappeared. Great pacing, humour, info and your summation of the movies was bang on. Also a nice, un-biased tribute to the man himself. Nice work mate.
You just can't manage the attention span?
Interesting and puzzling how a well crafted, comfortably narrated YTube piece on Mel, which has at this point almost 2k comments, received under 20 likes and only 1 comment acknowledging it's value.
Fickle masses?
People forget how Gibson was 1 of the biggest stars in the world from the mid to late 80s up to the early to mid 2000s

What a great video! Thank you JoBlo. Mel truly is in a league of his own. Actor, Director, Producer almost everything Mel touches turns to gold whether critics seem to like it or not. Seeing his movies growing up I only yearn for more. Long live Mel Gibson!

I want him to direct more movies. Hacksaw Ridge was incredible.
I believe he will direct the sequel to Passion of the Christ next year. and then will probably do that Wild Bunch remake
Yes it totally was
He has to direct a Mad Max movie...eventually, when George Miller isnt around anymore.
There was a Viking movie he had planned to make with Leonardo DiCaprio. sadly, that project got shelved, I mean imagine his ultra violence direction in a viking setting. that project would be like a match made in heaven for him
@@v-trigger6137 I'm not too disappointed in that one not happening because there is another excellent viking movie from Robert Eggers coming out early next year called The Northman. What I really really want to see is the Wild bunch remake and another epic like Apocalypto, anything set in ancient times is cool because there are not really many ancient epics like that any more. And lastly I did read somewhere that Mel is considering directing Lethal Weapon 5 and I think that would be a fitting way to end the series even though the original director died, I'd still love to see this happen and I think if ever it were to happen Mel is the only one that could and should do it.
Mel Gibson is a legend. He is one of the few in Hollywood whose work has (without exaggeration) changed my life.

The infamous (staged and deliberately publicized) DUI arrest came because he made The Passion of Christ, and those running entertainment industry wanted to make an example out of him because of that. It was their Payback but they couldn't completely kill his career as they planned. The guy was and still is a legend, in front or behind the camera. Mel Gibson is an exceptionally talented human, but nonetheless human. One may choose to cut him some slack, or not. I will not judge this man by some of his worst days and continue to count Mel as a national treasure. Also, looking forward to more JoBlo videos
I met Mel once. I was backpacking up the Thai/Burmese border (as you do) and got into a small town around nightfall, dirty and tired. Looking for a bed for the night, we found out a film crew had taken over the town. No rooms. I was able to negotiate a spot to crash in a barn and went to look for food. We (my travel companion and I) found a small local place, completely empty. It was pretty trashed and the owner and her help were cleaning up. They got us some simple food, and we had a beer. There was another place down the street that was crowded, packed even. They been in this bar a while earlier and it was a mess. After a while some people moved up from there, and three white dudes walked up to the table and Mel asked if they could join us.
The two with him were dicks. Loud, and full of it. Mel was very polite and interested in what we were doing there. We had a few beers and the rest of the crowd came up, all falling down drunk, so we left. Turned out they were filming Air America. I found him very down to earth and ordinary.
My sister met him in Fiji. Similar circumstances. Mel is great with fans
I have to ask, how tall is he in your estimation?
Jeez, sounds like Mel was more in control of himself than the rest of his crew that night! How pathetic his crew was! And the fact that they rented out a whole village is disgusting. I bet Mel would have provided all of the town folk with food and drink while staying there. I don't understand the obnoxious, arrogant, holier than thou attitude for just making MOVIES.
air america was great i would of stayed

I was a summer camp counselor in '95. "Braveheart" had come out. I distinctly remember kids yelling, "Freedom!" before they dramatically stabbed into their chicken at dinners. Yep. That's what kids got out of "Braveheart". Probably not a kid's movie.
When Brave Heart came out everyone wasn't acting like a bunch of douches yet, so it was common for kids to watch a movie like this with their parents. Plus most average households only had a few tvs.
I had long hair as a teenager and from 1995-98 I was called William Wallace by the kids in my Boy Scout troop.
I was 6-8 when I first watched this movie, it was instantly my favorite movie.
I don’t think there was anything that made it inappropriate for a kid, nor was it to complex of a plot for a young child to understand.
This is a real piece of work, EXCELLENT work, thank You!
Great content 🙌🙌 Thank you

What a great compilation!!! I watched all the way to the end. What an amazing talent! I can forgive him for his mistakes and transgressions! As an alcoholic myself, I have “gone off”, and done and said things I would never do or say with a straight mind. I really like the gritty, indie movies he’s been doing lately. If he keeps doing stuff like Blood Father or Dragged Across Concrete, I wouldn’t mind at all.

I wouldn't say it was exactly brilliant, but it was defiantly a worthwhile watch and fairly decent for an sci-fi action movie.
For those who haven't seen it, It's basically like Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow, with the protagonist, having to slowly develop into a John Wick like character, through "trial and error", in order to save himself, his ex-wife, his son that he barely knew and eventually the entire world.
Mel Gibson = GOAT
I was raised on Mel, I don't remember a time when I hadn't seen Lethal Weapon or Mad Max. Movies like Braveheart, Payback, The Patriot, and Signs are some of my all time favorites, and even his most recent stuff like Dragged Across Concrete, Blood Father and Fatman had me thinking about what a shame we haven't been Blessed to watch this man work for the last 15 years, all the great roles that went to lesser actors. The fact of the matter is some guys are movie stars, they have a presence on screen that makes them a joy to watch, and Mel has that in spades.

First of all. EXCELLENT VIDEO young man! Thank you for a job well done. With regards to the subject matter:
When you think of actors with the best range of character abilities like, John Lithgow, James Woods, Michael Keaton or Tom Hanks and the star power of a Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Newman, Redford, Nicholson, Brando, DiCaprio etc... Mel Gibson is most definitely "in, On and among" that list considering his overall accomplishments and success in the industry as long and consistently as Mel has. His 13 MAJOR movie awards can not go unmentioned. As for any or even "All" of his lows and detractors... Well, The man is only human. Many fans can relate. Everyone has moments in their lives where a lapse of reason occurs. "'We are all actors, you and I, in a play which nobody wrote and which nobody will see." Mel has definitely been obscure and prominently in the public eye. or as William Shakespeare put it “All the world's a stage, And we are all merely players in it" or something to that effect.
Braveheart, the Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto were the most interesting films I’ve ever seen.
I for one saw "The Professor And The Madman" in the theater (in an early afternoon viewing), completely ignorant of the controversy, and had a great time. The entire cast is wonderful, and Mel and Sean Penn have great chemistry.
Didn’t both of them famously lobby for this film not to be released?
I agree though - I enjoyed it.
I would like to add, that I admire how Mel and Penn both went all the way into their characters, and in my opinion gave one of the best performances of their lifetime, what a delight to see them sum-up so many years of excellence in acting in such an intense and intricate portrayal of their respective characters, complimented by a perfect chemistry between them two. A sincere, humble, genious and cleverly nuanced performance from both for characters very different from their usual ones. Not sure what the lawsuits controversies were about on that movie, but I for one didnt even want for the movie to end because it was so good.
What is the (unrelated) music track in the background when showing the Mad Max 3 cage fight?? I'm having a little trouble sourcing it.

Road Warrior is great but I love the rawness of Mad Max. With Road Warrior I know I'm watching a movie. Mad Max kind of makes me feel like I am living it. There's something about how it was made.
Is Mel Gibson your real name? Are you related to that actor guy?
@@1pcfred I love Mad Max also .... I stood in line the first night Road Warrior came out in theaters .
because I enjoyed the first film so much .
but you have to respect the story told when Mel Gibson only has sixteen lines of dialogue in the entire film.
@@qruqid Mad Max 2 or the Road Warrior is good too. But it doesn't have quite the impact the original does. Beyond Thunderdome is how Hollywood ruins things. I've seen worse movies than it though. Thunderdome has its moments. I have the Aussie cut of Mad Max on VHS. It isn't like the US release. Well it is. But the US release was dubbed.
This was GREAT! Well done!
I never paid attention to his personnel life, but grew up watching his roles and he is definately a top favorite actor of mine. The Patriot, Signs, We Were Soldiers (I think is title), Into the Darkness (or Edge of Darkness),etc...And then his part with Apocalypto, which is still an amazing piece of work...
Don't care what anyone else has to say about Mel. Mel this goes out to you. You are one of the few actors and directors I greatly admire. I grew up with your inspirational roles helping me to be more authentic and genuine in my life by how I look at life. I will always have your back.
Sincerely,
This cheeky fellow.
I love him as an actor and director , him being stop by cops and saying some rubbish it's nothing compared to Meryl and crew knowing what their friend Harvey was doing and actually helping him to get his pray , and also probably some of the victims did that with no remorse as they want a shot at the Hollywood, fame and fortune. Him doing what he did it's nothing compared to all that shit half of those perverting stupid people should be locked .
He talked about that in one of his interview back in 1998.
Absolutely man so right! And btw the jew thing is not a lie, still true!
He is more a brilliant director than he ever was as an actor. But what really sealed his deal also that most forget are those private Oksana recordings back in 2010... He like abused and hit that woman and their child and went totally nuts.
I bet hes still fukking nuts
@@clopper3753 What man doesn't use a whoxe like that for abuse? We man all been there at 1 point in our live!
@@kevingoeminne5922Exactly, they tried to ruin him for telling the truth 🙄 still telling the truth today.i ❤ Mel 🙂
This is, by far, one of your best. Mel is one of my top favorites. I didn't realize how many of his movies I have missed. Need to do a search for Mel Movies now.
I love Hacksaw Ridge, have seen it many times! Greetings from Lima Peru!
Thunderdome is under rated af.
Do one of these about Ray Liotta.
Hmm, No Escape was also underrated af.
this is what a fuck happend, not why the fuck didnt he made it 🙂 But yeah, I like him too. He was a very good actor, better that most, but he never became a star
Ray Liotta is hidden OP
His roles in "Blow" & "Marriage Story" were actually great and robbed for a supporting actor nomination
It’s crazy how many hit movies he’s been in.
I will always love Mel Gibson. No matter that he had problems not that long ago.
We all have had our bad moments. It's just that Mel's were aired out to the public by his ex and the media.
That movie where he played Santa Claus was so funny. Loved it!
Lethal Weapon is a great representation of the 90s era in cinematography. Its nostalgic and brings me back to childhood whenever I watch it. A movie with a similar effect is Big Trouble in Little China- although that is more for the 80s era!
Gosh i love the cinematography from the years between 1986 - 2007 especially the usage of film in those movies
It’s so much better than most of today’s HD stuff and CG FX over reliant stuff.
It is difficult to separate fact from fiction in the lives on these Hollywood A-listers, but one thing that stands out to me, and speaks to the character of Mel Gibson, is the support he received from fellow acts and co-stars like Robert Downey Jr, Jodie Foster and Vince Vaughan. These guys had a lot to lose by hitching their wagon to Mel Gibson, but they did in an unwavering and full-supportive way. So the guy mustn't be all that bad, even if alcoholism rendered him an arsehole from time to time. It's also been rumored that some powerful people in Hollywood were not happy at Gibson seeing fit to both circumvent their studio control and create hugely successful, independent films which threatened their hegemony to the very core.
When Charlie Sheen got roasted about the similar thing _he_ said, an extremely odd thing happened: an audience full of actors got _REALLY excited_ about having anti-Semitic sentiment being expressed out loud. I mean *_really_* excited.
It's very nice of all those non-Jews to have Mel's back. All while not saying what was right or wrong about what he said or how he said it, or in any context whatever.
It's one thing to talk about one's boss(es) in any forum. To do it & then make about their ethnicity is *something else entirely.* I've had bosses I hated & never _once_ did *I make it* about that. I'd love to hear what any one of these people would do differently or that they can't under present Jewish leadership instead of bitching about Jews existing.
Matthew Broderick kills 2 people in a car accident when he's on the wrong side of the road, continues to star in mediocre movies and later is featured in a multi-million-dollar Honda commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.
Mel Gibson hasn't killed or injured anyone, but he sure does come out with BS sometimes. He's a highly functioning alcoholic and artist, maybe people take what he says too seriously sometimes but also he can be a bit of a dick.
That he pissed off some high-ups in Hollywood goes without saying, and his ostracisation is totally to do with power and the fact he keeps on coming back just shows how talented he is.
I have been saying this since the beginning! Everything that happened was so sus!

Ok?
Gibson has brought us so many masterpieces
Mel is a great actor so many amazing films
That phone call was fucking hilarious. I laugh over that still whenever I hear audio of it.
I've been such a massive Mel Gibson fan since I was a kid watching Chicken run then to lethal weapon, mad max and the EPIC Braveheart. I love Mel Gibson
Same here! Those exact movies when I was 8-9. Even then I knew he was a brilliant actor and director
@@danielmashanic5738 ah yeah he's the best! The Patriot too, his simpsons episode was a favourite of mine as a kid too haha
Google "Mel Gibson phone rant" and that will change.
@@kdryan21 no I've seen that video before
@@Iankiely If you can look at a man who would break his girlfriends teeth while she was holding his infant son with anything other than complete revulsion then you may want to rethink your values.
Many have done worst . Mel is amazing 🙌🏻
Gotta love the voice-mail message 😅
Wait, there's a dark director's cut of Payback?
I got to see this.
I prefer the theatrical cut of Payback, much better in my opinion.
@@marcelomoura5644 I tend to agree
This is one of those times the theatrical cut is actually much better.
Yes and I have to say the theatrical version is better, less dark and less depressing at the end sorry for the somewhat spoiler
Yeah this is one of the very few movies where the studio cut is actually better than the director's cut. The exception that proves the rule I guess.
He's set to star in a John Wick prequel called 'The Continental'. So he's still getting work, which is good.
He is racist, homophobe and antisemitist.
@@Evil-Keks What?
@@d.m.w3447?
@@Evil-Keks you said he's a racist homophobe antisemite
@@d.m.w3447 I did. So what?
I remember watching the Road Warrior at a drive-in when I was a kid. It was awesome. Hollywood has hated him since Passion and it's us that keep him going. Money talks and his movies sell.
great review, and I loved "the Professor and the Madman" movie
