I usually watch your uploads whilst doing a couple of hours of zone 2 on the indoor bike. Last year I had double hip surgery which put me out for nearly 4 months (on the back of 5 months off the previous year due to the then unknown hip issues I was getting). Whilst on recovery from that surgery, I set myself a goal of doing Ride London (100 miles) in under 5 hours and the Dragon Ride Grand Fondo (130 miles with 11,400 ft of climbing) as an incentive to get fit again in 2024.
Last week I ended up in hospital with severe chest pain and got told I have inflammation around my heart due to a virus. Initially it's just 2 weeks of complete rest then a re-scan. If the inflammation is still there, it's 6 weeks rest with no exercise. If it's not better by then, then it's 3 months rest with no exercise and further investigation.
Feeling pretty down at the moment but your channel really does keep my chin up and keep me focused on my goals, (even when I'm watching my fitness slide away with nothing I can do to stop it). So thanks Ryan for putting so much time into the filming and the content of seeing someone who isn't super fit aiming to achieve their goals. I know everyone watching appreciates it a lot

Thank you Zebeddy for taking the time to write this comment and for being so honest. Comments like yours reminds me why I make these videos. The challenges you mentioned are inspirational (and sound incredible) but your ability to keep your chin up throughout your obviously challenging health issues is even more inspirational.
I genuinely hope you start to feel better soon, remember “it's always darkest before the dawn”.

As a 100kg+ rider myself my suggestion would be prioritise comfort, it doesn’t have to be the most aero or lightest bike. Get a bike with relaxed rather than race geometry, something that can fit at least 30mm tyres and ideally disc brakes as they will have more stopping power so you will be more comfortable and confident descending, I would suggest a gravel bike or all road bike rather than an out and out race bike. And if you can try and get a bike fit first. And congrats on your upcoming wedding

Love watching your videos. Much better than watching TV. Nothing better than watching a good person set and achieve their goals. We all love to watch our favourite sports stars but I have to admit that there is an equal passion to witness you win your first Zwift race.
As far as buying a road bike. Get a bike fit first. It’s about £200. You don’t need your own bike. You need to find 2 measurements that fit you. Seat stem to handlebars and top of seat to peddle. Once you know those 2 measurements buying a new or 2nd hand bike will be easy. If you have a budget of around 2.5k look for a 2021 Giant TCR or a Giant Propel. Those bikes comes with a Shimano Ultegra group set and a dual power meter. Most power meters will set you back £500 so to get it with the bike is huge.

Great goals for 2024. As a cyclist i would advice you to choose a bike which is comfortable. If you want some affortable bike look at a Cube or the Lapierre Pulsium. I am driving an Aero bike but that's not the best to start cycling outdoors.
My longest ride until this year was 230 km. This year on the 5th of august I wil ride 350 km. It's not an event. Just a solo ride from my house to our holiday destination. So this will be a mental challange.

Great video, please keep them up. I find you videos inspiration and motivating. I started following you when you were posting the winning on Zwift videos. You have motivated me to do a 5k this year. Unfortunately there isn't a park run culture where I live but there is a park with a gravel path so I'm going to do it there.
In 2023 I lost 50 kg through diet and Zwifting, from 135 kg to 85 kg. I was originally motivated because I had signed up for a 50 mile IRL ride for the previous 3 years and didn't do it because I wasn't in good enough shape to do it. I was able to both do that 50 mile ride as well as another one. From the little that I've seen you do in Zwift and your other videos and what I know about large group bike rides I know that you'll be able to do it and enjoy yourself.
Here is my suggestions for your bike. Either an endurance road bike or a gravel bike and a bike fit. Some bike shops will give you a fitting and will recommend bikes based off of the fit. I don't know if they do them in the UK but I had a RETUL fit done and it was the best thing that I did for my bike. A lot of time was spent on getting my cleats and shoes positioned so that everything was in line and comfortable. I personally ride a Giant Defy and I'm very happy with it. I also use it on my trainer for Zwifting so it gets used almost every day.

@@RyanCondon whatever bike you do get just make sure you get it professionally fitted. I made the mistake of thinking I could do it myself and riding was uncomfortable. It wasn’t until I’d had it done professionally that I realised it was like I’d been running in the wrong size shoes the whole time. I’d also recommend buying the bike from a local bike shop that does mechanics too. It can be a touch more expensive but in the long run works out cheaper because they’ll give support for small mechanical tweaks etc that ordinarily they’d charge for. Plus they give great advice for picking the bike based on where you want to ride it if that’s just on roads or sometimes on gravel too.

I started off watching because I shared your goal of breaking 30 minutes for the Parkrun 5K. I also share the self conscious teenage daughter who’s gone from getting up at the crack of dawn with me and loving any activity to getting up at the crack of noon and hating the very idea of running. I did manage a 29.40 parkrun but was then injured for 12 weeks and today I smashed 34 minutes ( 33.59) on my way back to sub 30. I was 66 this week so I don’t know if I’ll make it but the journey is maybe as much fun as the arrival. Anyway good luck in 2024 - I shall be watching all the way. Good Arrows! 🎯

Chances are you are going to absolutely love riding outdoors and if you buy something super cheap you are very quickly going to look for an upgrade. Mid-late 2010's 2nd hand carbon with a Shimano 105 level groupset is something that will set you up for years to come. Fantastic channel mate

Also, even though I think this sounds negative I want to say it: please take care and watch out for injuries. You might want to push yourself and do the best you can to reach your goals, but overtraining is a real possibility. For example I had feet/knee injuries that did not allow me to run/cycle for 1-3 months. That sucks so much and I would hate to see that happen to you. The fact that you watch them as do may others (According to CZcams over 30k people) I am happy with this progress and I am now seeing growth that I did not expect. I also see overwhelmingly positive responses and comments which I appreciate even more as this helps motivate me and others into trying new things and believing they can do things they may have otherwise thought impossible.
The analytics also show me that I have a good retention rate in comparison to other videos in this genre, so... Stats I suppose!?!
As I said in response to the OP (who asked a good question and my response is not a reflection of that question) I started Vlogging and Journalling my videos as I knew I had started something unique to me and I wanted to document it and I am very pleased I did. I also started with zero subscribers, it took me three years to reach 1k, I'm now about to cross 3k in less than two months (still tiny but it's growth). Not bad eh?!
It was a big decision I took to share what I do on CZcams, I make next to zero monetary for the hours of recording and editing it takes to make these videos and for that I like to talk about my progress. Thats it! Simple as that! I am not a fitness CZcamsr but I do make videos about fitness on CZcams.
I make these videos 50% to be watched and 50% as a way of journalling what it is I'm doing and why. That means "talk" even if it is "way to much in videos like this one".
If you're here just for the Zwift videos (and I'm guessing you are) then there are 100 other far better, far more explosive Zwifters that you could watch.
If you're here to watch a once hugely overweight bloke attempt the impossible whilst he chats about it then welcome.

I’ve got the same Zwift goals as you and I’m also buying my first road bike to start commuting to work (when it gets a little warmer!). As somebody who researches things to death, I think the the Triban RC520 road bike is a good option. Not horribly expensive, can take wide more comfortable tyres, has disc breaks, and a load of gears. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with your goals this year.

I've commented on this twice but they keep disappearing :-/ Anyway, great work Ryan. I was just going to recommend Decathlon's entry level bikes. Superb value, and as good as bikes costing more than twice as much. Several options in the £400-£800 bracket. Cade Media have some good reviews on here.

Excellent update Ryan. However, a drawback of so much aerobic exercise is the loss of muscle mass. Now that you are lighter you can perform exercises that otherwise would have been frustrating. You should add calisthenics and body weight to your current routine and focus more on body re-composition. Losing an extreme amount of weight may have taken a toll on your original muscle mass. Bigger muscles especially as we age have a huge impact on life quality and expectancy, health, and staying lean long-term. I agree, now that you are at 100 kg it is time to stop thinking about losing weight and redefine your fitness strategy. What you have done so far is impressive, keep it up. I enjoy your Zwift videos the most, I can't wait to see you upgraded to the C category.

    • @redkeyspoke
      @redkeyspoke Před 6 měsíci

Yes, something with plenty of tire clearance, but preferably smooth tread (assuming you'll ride on the road). Weight doesn't matter, but 'curly' drop bars will be best for long rides (like 54 miles) for different hand positions. Don't have to spend a ton, but something with hydraulic disk brakes will serve you well in all weather's. And, low enough gearing, maybe 1:1 ish would be good for that climb.
