The Fan Dance - How Tough Are The SAS?

The Fan Dance is a 24k military themed, route march over Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons. It's a brutal race against the clock carrying a 45lb bergen over some of the most hostile terrain in the UK. It is also part of the SAS special forces selection tests and I have decided that it would be a good idea to give it a go... Spoiler! It turns out that the SAS are pretty bloody tough! I was walking on Pen y fan that day the 3 soldiers died with my wife and i remember pointing out to my wife all the white frothy sick that was on the trail just below the summit . The group of soldiers were off to my left about 600 metres away heading downwards . One of the hottest days iv'e ever been up there so can't imagine how those boys felt carrying those bergens .

you did well geezer after being in an airborne outfit in the UK its a mix between physical and mental i would say the mental part is more important A SENSE OF HUMOUR IS A MUST AS YOU WILL NEED IT . spare pair of socks and for blisters carry some surgical spirit for things like this pop the blisters and straight on with the surgical spirit dries them out QUICK and cleans at the same time . worn in boots an essential and get yourself a bag of boiled sweets a slow release of energy or a bag of raisins even better , like the old saying goes NEVER TAKE ADVICE THATS IN NI POSITION TO GIVE IT . DEPENDS mainly on your pain tolerance took 3 teeth out myself with a bottle of gin afterwards to clean forget crap from the chemist a bottle of spirit the dentist is never open on a sunday or 3am in the morning when there playing up . got out of the airborne after realising this goverment is the enemy best wishes to all the people in the british military SAS soldiers have already died in ukraine i do hope that this load of lies does not continue and this insanity stops before more good people die .
Lol "we've started" sounding like hes blown his arse already
The death of those highly skilled soldiers were preventable. Things have changed since then, unfortunately it took the death of multiple members.
Having done the Fan Dance (none selection), more decades ago that I care to think about. My, has the instructors banter changed. Back then it would have been more along the lines of "congratulations on signing up and getting here. Were this for real. You have all proved you lack the intelligence for Special Forces service". Im actually surprised you had such good weather. I had maybe four hours of Sun when I did my two weeks in Wales.
Tougher than you ginge
My neighbour done this 3 weeks ago, said it was the hardest thing he ever done.
Fair play to your neighbour. Thanks for watching. 👍
Well done mate
Cheers 🙏🙌
First time coming to the channel....what a delight, (Ryan, not the event!). Awesome content, great attitude and sense of humour. Subbed! (UK hikers obsession with 'hiking boots' is insane! Sort it out!)
Thanks James. 😀🙏 That means a lot. 🙌
I went up Pen Y Fan yesterday. It is one hell of a climb. I want to hike the route of the Fan Dance just because, not run it, I'm not that fit. I just took it all in, and my thoughts were 'I'm hiking in the footsteps of giants'. I loved your video and have subscribed. Well done for completing this mammoth trek. It is definitely a leveller.
Cheers Chris, its a great route. Pleased you enjoyed it. Thanks for subbing, I really appreciate that sir.
4 hours is the cut off and it's actually quite early on selection - end of the 1st week.
Plenty zink tape for the feet and 2 pair of socks also wear comfortable boots. Altberg or Lowe boots are good they are like a pair of trainers also insoles are a god send. I wasn't in the Army I never went for selection I was in the RAF we walked it we had a day to do it and had plenty stops for fluids and foods it was a spot of adventure training for a laugh. It hammered down with rain the whole day and the wind just bullied you the whole day.
Stumbled on this Ryan. Wow! What a great vlog. Thanks. Love your approach. Your honesty. Your sense of humour. And for being slightly mad!! What an amazing achievement. You too are an inspiration. Thanks again.
Thank yoy very much indeed. Really appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. Pleased you liked it. 💪🙏🙌
It’s so so refreshing to have someone like you being so real. You are clearly a great communicator. I hope you can also influence many many people to be like you. What a great role model. Especially in the world today. We need more people like you. Please keep going!
Don’t be so hard on yourself, you did well…👊🏼
Well done mate. Horror show or what. I don't remember it being so "tidy" or the paths so worn that they've become gullies. I don't know if it's made it better or worse but it was always meant to be a mind f£ck anyway. New to your channel so subscribed and a buckshee comment.
@@nigelsailing Thanks for the comment Nigel. Brutal course. I appreciate the sub. 🙏🙌
Had a mate in my unit who went for selection. Came back after 3 weeks a drained husk of what he had been. He had trained for months to get ready but to no avail. Bought himself out of the Army six months later. Never heard from him again and that was 40 years ago.
Great video - amazing achievement... but what I like the most is your honest self-assessment at the end and lack of happiness at your performance - that's the attitude of someone who is going to continue learning and improving in life. Good on you!
@@shonunezekiel cheers! I really appreciate that. 🙏🙌
Well done mate, great effort. Have been looking at doing this myself. I'll have to do it this winter. What are the boots you were wearing by the way?
@@anand0212 thanks Anand. Its a great event, really enjoyed it. The boots were quickly dispenced with. Going to eventually invest in better ones.
blisters are the worst thing on these hill runs but experirance is learning
Been up pen y fan quite a few times luckily i only live about half hour away……i avoid thru the summer months too hot and too busy
Mmm when did it go down to 45lb from 55lb
The fan Dance is at the BEGINNING of selection, I did 'ex high walk' on my third day after completing my BFT (three miles total) & CFT (8 miles in 2 hours with full kit) a day before, the course can lose at least a third of the intake in the first week, we lost nearly a half.
Very well done. It takes a lot of mental strength to control your frustrations and anger when climbing hills and running with severe blistering. Only those who have had similar experiences could fully understand how well you did. (subscribed)
Thanks and thank you for the sub. 💪🙌
Congrats, I know that ain't easy! Dropped 50kg in 12 months, but plateaued. My problem was consistency, so I failed and yo-yoed...lockdown didn't help. Back to square one.
its only square one if you forget what you achieved. Good luck! Thanks for the comment.
@@RyanCondon Thanks for that. For me I just started walking to/from work (7mi a day), acted as a decompress as well. Going to have to break away from the home office and hit the Surrey Hills trails for a couple of hours a day...👍
@@LoremIpsum1970 walking is such a great start, I hope it all goes to plan for you.
@@RyanCondon Cheers for that👍
Did the fan dance in 2010. This was on the back of Cambrian patrol, which wasn’t wise. It was one of the more challenging things I ever did and I did this in winter, so was extremely weird. You feel hot and stressed, but it’s hypothermia. Fun times. FYI, a mate who now serves in H was 1 of the casualties in mentioned. Thankfully, he wasn’t a statistic. Note: for context, I did it on the pre selection course in late October for the January 11 Course
Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate that. Sorry to hear about your mate, hyperthermia is no joke. This route is brutal and anyone that does it is a beast. 💪🙌🙏
On my selection in 1994 we did this test on Day 2. My DS said, there’s only one way to guarantee you pass this test, that’s if you stay with me…. He promptly disappeared 😂 I went flat out, saw him again when he was returning. I completed the course in 3:20. Ended up passing selection and served my next 15 years in the unit. (B Sqn) great times…. But not always. Well done for giving the route a go 👌🏻
Three hours, twenty... Bloody hell! Welldone and thanks for watching. If you're a beast, I dont know what that makes your DS!? I really appreciate the comment. 🙌🙏

Thanks for watching and commenting. Jim sounds impressive, sorry for your loss.
Had to complete the Fan Dance as part of my Lance Corporal Cadre... Was killer! We had shocking downpours and boggy terrain to deal with rather than heat exposure. Thunderflash in our accommodation in the middle of the night, then bundled into the back of a 4 tonner and driven from Tidsworth to the Beacons. You did really well to complete it, well done mate.
If it was easy mate, then everyone would get in 22. Well done for giving it a good go, mentally hard and only yourself to push you.

The three peaks round is about 1400m of ascent. The low point is Horton at 250m, about 480m to Inglebourgh summit, from the valley above Chaple en le frith at 290m to Wernside summit is about 440m and from the low point of 260m to Pen-y-gent is 430m which is 1350m and given that the route is surprisingly smooth there is very little reascent, there is around 20m on Inglebourgh and probably the same between Wernside and Pen-y-gent. Inglebourgh to Wernside has virtually none and same on the descent from Pen-y-gent to Horton. You should by now realise that mentally it is much easier to go anti-clockwise as then you get that long boring bit done while you are still fresh.
I like that "boring bit", its horses for courses. I like clockwise (Ingleborough first) as I dont like heights and would rather get that done on the decent and enjoy the flats upto Pen-Y-Ghent. However anyone tackles it, I wouldn't consider it easy otherwise no one would do it. Thanks for watching.
Was that the pink house on the top of north hill I recognise?
Fan dance is just the start of the hills phase. You scratched the surface.
Not as much as i scratched my feet
well done mate that looks brutal
I saw these nutters one winter I was climbing up Pen Y Fan. We thought we were having it tough climbing up through some snow and slippery rock from the back side of it but when we got to the top we found 1) Loads of welsh people in trainers and shorts on a jolly with their kids and 2) A load of fitness nutters doing this race. As I remember it, some of them were carrying a pretend "gun" in the form of a bit of scaffolding pipe?
Sounds like a sight to behold.
hey Ryan. i saw very nice reviews about the pump and just waiting some promotion in order to get one and ditch the CO2 cartridges... look, i see some cyclist youtubers using a carbon fiber self stick which they lock on the bike (seatpost or handlebar), perhaps another better upgrade to make u hands free :)
Show your feet Show your feet 🦶🏻 👍🏻🇦🇺 good job Brother
If u do it again walk up run down I've lived in those hills all my life and no every inch of my mountain in every weather respect is needed ❤
@@ianpalmer5435 thanks for the tips.
Try tapping up ur feet first before you start
Nice day out! If you are tempted to do it again, start at Ribblehead and go anti-clockwise……that gets two peaks knocked off quickly and (as you have now discovered) gives you access to a reliable waterpoint at the car park toilets just when you need it. The hills also seem to work with you in that direction, I know that sounds strange but it helps!
I know thats a popular way round but Im not a fan of the scramble up Ingleborough that way. Ive done it three times now so not sure ill do it again. Thanks for watching. Pleased you enjoyed it. 🙏🙌
