  • I had never skated as a kid, picked up skateboarding for the first time at the age of 28. The first 6 months were horrendous, spent most of that time trying to Ollie. Now I will show you my last year, from 29 years old to 30.
    Skater @ 6:15 is Dragan
Skater @ 6:21 is Luke Tulip
Please support my "artistic" endeavours at: / adnancan
The aim of the video is to give new starters a little indication of how much they can expect to progress. Please bear in mind that I work full time and only was able to skate once a week. From this month onwards (August 2018) I will start to skateboard at least 3 times a week.
I hope you guys enjoy this 1 year skateboarding progression video. The next set of tricks i will learn is the 360 shuv, big spin, Tre flip, boardslide and inward heelflip, plus there will be lots of goofing around. So if you feel like it, subscribe!

On average how long (hr's) would you spend on your board each week? I've just bought my skateboard at the ripe old age of 36....and starting from zero! The aim....to ollie! :-) Any tips along the way would be brilliant. And great video by the way

Hey Philip. During the year, I was skating about once a week, 2-3 hour per session. Now I skate about 3-4 times a week. My progression is now starting kick into gear as expected. The Ollie's will take time, my recommendation is that you ride as much as possible. Then get used to sliding your front foot up from just below the bolts to the end of the board, without actually popping an ollie. This will get you used to the motion. Then start practicing the pop without landing your front foot. The pop is a very quick snap of the tail quickly followed by lifting your foot back up again. Then later combine both motions.

@@AdnanCan I used to skate as a kid, but now, after about 20+ years of NOT skateboarding, I'm 42 now, I decided to hop back on the board. I think the disadvantage is that my mind still remembers the tricks and kicks, but my body is nowhere near to be able to follow the mind. And I am physically nowhere near how fit I was back in the day. This said, no broken bones or injuries beyond few bruises. I'm still struggling with the ollie, but I am able to kick and roll around with confidense and not killing myself or anyone else. :D

One thing I've advised to guys/ gals just picking up a board for the first time ever is to not get caught up in the technical trickery of skateboarding! FIRST, get as comfortable as possible on just riding fast and swerving each direction without ticktacking, learn to powerslide, pivot around, while keeping your balance, pump up and down a quarter, perfect your ollie, ride the wave. Trust the process, it is just as fun as learning a new trick (trust me), THEN, tricks would naturally come. I've been skating for most of my life now, and have not slowed down, even with college and a fulltime position, I'm 26, so I've maintained a healthy exercise on my board and feel as comfortable as ever, so glad I haven't slowed down as I've learned my health and physique have greatly benefited from it - being outdoors is a plus.
TLDR: Tricks are secondary, comfort and style comes first, everything will slowly fall into place and you'll be thankful for picking up a board. Nothing like it.
    Peace

Can’t believe no one commented here. This is the best advice I have heard in a while. Picking up my board tomorrow I just bought after not skating in 15 years, I can still do a few tricks. Kick flip, shove it, and Ollie. But I will definitely focus on style and comfort on my board . Thanks man!

Agreed. I’m 25 and just getting back into skateboarding after a 8-10 year on again/off again break. And i definitely cant do all the stuff i used to do. Even carving around the park and riding transitions feels so unnatural now compared to when i was younger. I was more of a street skater when i was younger and was never very good at transition so i’m making transition skating my goal. Just going to get back into the flow of pumping around bowls, rock to fakies, and learning to roll over coping into transitions to start runs as my goal for the next couple months. Super stoked to be back!!

      @KENTOSI Před 3 lety

This is sound advice, but the thing is that for a lot of people, they just want to get to the cool stuff first. It's not till you have injuries & frustrations that you learn to take a step back and actually try to nail the basics and enjoy yourself.
      Great advice though.

Dude, that is actually quite fast progression. Excellent work. My only advice I could give you besides keep skating, is learn tricks while rolling on the skateboard as opposed to standingstill. I am 45 years old. I ate, slept, and shit skateboarding from the ages of about 12 years old until I was 25. I have been off of a skateboard much longer than I ever even skateboarded, yet I still watch skateboarding videos religiously to this day. I am completely blown away by the progression of skateboarding today. Skateboarding to me, is/was the best years of my life. I still have dreams about it. I still formulate tricks in my mind. I need to get back on a skateboard. Great job to you brother, keep thrashing and peace. I’m gonna go buy myself a skateboard! See what you did to me. I’m having a mid-life crisis!

LOL, bro. My history is pretty much the same as yours, and the biggest "critique" that came to my mind when watching this was exactly what you said--tricks are more easily done when rolling, especially ones that involve rotations, such as pop shuv-its and 180s. Very smooth ground such as that found in skate parks is great for learning. Neat video, though! It demonstrates to all those who have never picked up a skateboard how insanely difficult skateboarding is, as well as how fun it is at all levels.

He said this correctly. You are trying all these tricks with no board control. Don't drive to get coffee/store/close places...etc; ride your deck. You will be amazed once your muscles learn to ride the deck how much easier all these tricks will come. Get a short cruiser deck with looser trucks even to ride around. Trust me man... This is really important stuff. Think of it like this, pro hockey players will all tell you before learning how to be fancy with the puck, you need to learn how to skate around effortlessly. You may think you know how to flow around, but from the video, you don't yet.

    Yo bro MAD Respect!
I skated for like 15 years as a kid & was even sponsored by my local shop...
Anyways i got diagnosed with a brain tumor & had to relearn how to walk...
Safe to say i have NOT been on a board since then...
I wish you lived close to New Jersey!
I would totally sk8 with you!
I would be RElearning everything from scratch!
Man i WISH i could still Nollie Inward Heelflip.... Whenever i landed one of those it felt MAGICAL! As if nothing else in life matters!
I subbed! I look forward to more!
And hey if you want any help in learning to do some of these tricks faster I can help you with foot position and all that kind of stuff because it's still buried in my mind from when I was a kid... Please feel free to pick my brain!
For starters to get doing tricks while moving at speed, you're going to want to straighten your front foot out so that it is perpendicular to your shoulders... That way you have more surface area to bring the board higher up with you when you Ollie... At the present time you're just using your toe and you don't get enough friction with just your toe, so you're Ollie's are not as high as they could be!
Keep it up man I'm really proud of you!

Loosen up bro! You look super tense on that thing!
Personal opinion: I skated my whole life and am now almost 30. The things that improved my skating the most were getting better at riding the board instead of perfecting my flip tricks. Bomb more hills, spend time in pools/pipes, learn to power slide, and start ollie-ing off of bigger ledges/gaps/stairs. Spread those feet out and hunker down. Also, play with the tightness of your trucks. You may find that its easier to flip your board when they arent so loose. If you weigh a little bit more, tighter trucks will be easy to work with. Also, pay attention to the width of your deck. Different widths are typically important depending on the style of skating you're pursuing. Also if you have huge feet, get a bigger board.
Have fun, get some scabs, grow your balls. It gets me so stoked to see adults getting into skating, let alone perfecting it!

I believe that was his first pro model. Man... those were some good times. It was in some dirty pebble strewn parking lot of a restaurant in downtown Menasha, WI. (Nowhereville). I also remember where I was when I did my first 360 kick flip (Now referred to as a tre flip), My first hand rail, etc. There really isn’t a whole lot I’m all that enthusiastic about in life anymore, but man skateboarding, now that’s something i’ll just never be able to shake off! It’s amazing how important those years were for the molded me into the person I am to this day. And that’s one (albeit middle-aged) fun loving, mountain humping, bad ass motherfucker. • @Mtaalas
    @Mtaalas Před 6 lety +10

    Wonderful thing you've started!
I have a saying, that best "trick" you can do in skating in to start it. Worst is to quit. And everything else in between is just awesome!
There's this one thing I did notice... you have a tendency to bring your feet close together when you lose your balance or when you land... I know it's a normal tendency of humans to do that when they seek balance, but in skating, it's counterproductive and even dangerous. You lose your balance even more if you land on the board feet together because your body reacts to that sense of losing balance by doing that... always keep your feet well separated so you have better balance and feeling of control even when you fall.
It's going to take time and thoughtful effort to get that out of your system, but once you do, you stop feeling "on a knives edge" when you fall or in general when you skate.
Other thing to focus on is to keep your knees bent and loose at all times... even when falling If you straighten them out, you lose one direction of movement from your legs and you'll lose your balance or fall even more spectacularly.
People have told me that I have a funny way of walking since I bend me knees more than average... that's because of skating for so long. :D
    I'm 32 myself, though I started when I was 15.
And doing warm-ups, stretching etc. isn't considered to be a "skater thing" but they should absolutely be considered as one. Always remember to warm up, stretch your whole body before trying to do something more extreme. You'll save yourself from horrid injuries... I promise you that! :D
I hope you'll find a lot of joy from this hobby! :)

You are progressing really well. Ive been skating for 9 years now and if you ask me you should loosen your trucks a little such that you could take the turn at 06:50 as one curve. I dont say this because loose trucks are cooler or anything. However, being able to cruise around a park or spot smoothly will increase your board feeling a lot. And board feeling is just as important as the ollie itself.

I’m 32 years old. I’ve skated since I was 12 and it WAS my life for about 15 years. I haven’t skated in about 5 years. I was actually pretty good considering I did it almost every day for half of my life. I eventually got badly injured and never took care of the injury due to financial reasons( I have a bone in the bottom of my foot that’s completely obliterated due to throwing myself down stairs and gaps) I’m getting surgery soon and would love to put out a progression video. I’ve skated once ( about 6 months ago) and it’s crazy how much skill I’ve lost and how uncomfortable I feel on my board, when it used to feel like second nature. Can’t wait to hop back on my board and teach my little man some tricks! Awesome video btw!👌

I was skating when I was 16 years old, so around 1990.. but stopped 1991 because of an injury (I tried that "new trick" an olli 360 kickflip varial) while landing this trick I slipped over the nose with my foot and twisted my ankle very hard. That was one the the worst days in my life, because I was so much addicted to skateboarding.. however I finished this whole thing by selling my board then (it was a Frankie Hill Board) for 120 deutsche Mark... 2000 I bought me a new skateboard (Alien Empire) and was skating again for around two days.. but somehow it seemed to be too dangerous.. :( some days ago I found that board again in my cellar! :D I came across your video by chance (well done!! respsect!!), and now I am really asking myself if I should try again some tricks, just for the cause.. :) I am 44 years old now.. hhmmm...

Skating teaches you a little thing about life, I think. When you fall, get back up. Give it another go. It’s so satisfying to hear the wheels roll on the pavement. That’s one thing I’ve always loved about skateboards. Hearing the wheels on the cement. I had a blind board when I was 8. Though I never really skated. I just started skating this year and I’m 24. Getting good at my Ollies. They’re high, I just gotta land em. Haha. #Punk rock af.

Good work man just got to power through. I got my first board at the start of 2017 i was 13 and it was very challenging and even more with my weird build with long legs and tall posture, the board I had my dad gave me had cracks and dents each side of the board chipped badly. And when I went to the skatepark it seemed like everyone was better than me. I went with my friend who was a little better than me other wise I wouldn’t go to the skatepark because I felt embarrassed.
That year from 2017 - 2018 I learnt how to 50:50 50:0 and fakie and some simple drops. And how to kick turn... basically all the basics on a mini ramp
Didn’t get close to doing an Ollie even after all those hours trying
After that first year I felt bad but I was still wanting to get better the next year
The start of next year me and my friend got into a fight with some kids at the skatepark that tried to steal my mates skateboard my friend from then quit skateboarding and I quit also for about 6 months thinking I was done forever...
I started watching my younger brother skateboarding half way through 2018
and I felt more inspired to keep going. So I picked up the old chipped board and started again i got better at ollieing the and it felt good Christmas came I had 400$from all relatives and I decided that I wasn’t going to give up yet so with that 100$ of that 400$ I bought a carbon fibre board from skater hq and now at the end of 2018 I can finally Ollie while ridding and and boneless and kind of Nollie and sometimes do a shuv it
Moral of the story is if you train everyday on a skateboard for 5 years you are never going to get worse you are bound to get better. All those people like me out there keep on going!!!

Hi man, the main thing i noticed is that you look kinda nervous on your board, even in the later months. Try and learn that smoothy attitude. It is not just about acting cool, its about muscle memory. Like adding little personal style gimicks to your attitude and tricks helps alot subconsciously and will give you more confidence. Makes your brain be more at ease and more auto-pilot at some point because it goes more with the flow and prevents you from overthinking the technical aspect of executing the tricks. Also i may be wrong but i think its way better to learn tricks with speed than motionless.
I'm 32, i've been skating from 15 to 20. Watching you kinda made me want to bring back that dusty board of mine from the closet and i guess i'm not the only one ! Keep it up !

This is a cool video. People don't realize how difficult skateboarding is compared to "traditional" sports.
Can I give you a tip for your kickflips that really helped me when I was trying to perfect them? Practice learning kickflip to nose stall on a small ledge (2 stairs tall or in the 14-16" range). I know it seems like you need to learn kickflips on flat ground before you can try them into a nose stall, but its one of those counter intuitive things. Kickflipping to a nose stall will force you to flick it correctly off the nose of the board and you will develope proper technique.
Great progression for a year. Remember to keep your shoulders square (parallel to your board)
Have fun just skating and going fast. One thing I noticed was that you try to do a lot of tricks, but you still look squirrelly as hell on your board.
Keep skating and you will be amazed at your progression over this next year.
