  • The war in Ukraine seems to have reached a stalemate. Neither the Russian forces are able to declare victory nor the Ukrainian soldiers are able to push the Russians out of Ukraine. This stalemate is frustrating Putin as Russia warn of using tactical nuclear weapons. What are these weapons and what will be the consequence of using one? All this and much more in this week's DeCode.

There seems to be some confusion delineating the difference between "tactical weapons" and "strategic weapons". I'll try to clarify it as best as I understand it myself. "Tactical" is akin to "mobile" or "smaller" while "strategic" is akin to "stationary" or "large scale". Strategic nuclear weapons are those usually found in silos and in the bomb bays of planes and typically have a much higher yield in comparison. Tactical nuclear weapons are typically what you see on cruise missiles or the occasional artillery with the capability of firing specially modified rounds with nuclear tips. These tend to be of much smaller yields. Hope that clears it up a little.

A tactical nuclear weapon has more to do with the yield of the weapon, not the distance
it travels to target. A ballistic missile could also carry a tactical nuclear warhead. And a

Strategic nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles are to inflict mass casualties and destroy infrastructure and make it uninhabitable long periods of time. It would work using a long half life nuclear component in a tactical nuclear weapon. If you plan to send your soldiers to play in your neighbors' playground you just nuked! Putin is threatening to use low yield nuclear weapons like nuclear artillery shells or nukes on cruise missiles. Some of the first North Korean nukes fit into the tactical nuke category. The USA also has tactical nuclear weapons too. As one who grew up with the Bomb - I would say the nastier element of nukes is the radioactive fallout. The cleanest nuke is the neutron bomb and EMP weapons. Radioactive fallout has the same problem as chemical weapons... depending on the way the wind blows ... one could risk being hoisted by one's own petard. Any use of nuclear weapons would leave a radioactive signature. EMP weapons would wipe out civilians but most mil std stuff will survive to live another day ... if Putin is seriously thinking of deploying such weapons then you'll also see the Russian generals who are worth half a lick sending out Russian NBC monitoring vehicles into the battlefield. Most nuclear weapon ready military forces have these Nuclear Biological Chemical monitor vehicle to detect radiation fallout, chemical or biological weapons usage on the battle field ... they are used to tell central command and field commanders about the NBC risks in the battlefield. The military NBC soldiers wear PAPR w NBC filters and PPE bunny suits....you can't miss'em. NATO has tactical nukes too so there is a risk of a tit for tat tactical nuke exchange. I would say the biggest risk of a nuclear exchange is not the nuclear explosions themselves but a famine when radioactive fallout poisons the regional food and water supply. Btw: iodine tablets might not be all that useful in preventing radiation poisoning of the thyroid. .

This was a very well thought out explanation of the escalation process. Because it's speculatory, but thoughtfully based on actions, level of aggression, dominance, etc, it does paint the picture of what Russia COULD do. We hope that Putin does not go down that road, because we've seen where it leads. If he loses this and Ukraine pushes them out, hopefully, he accepts defeat. If not, I fear the tactical nuke is the next step and he's simply crazy enough to use it. The global response will be overwhelming. I hope the people of Russia who don't agree with what he's doing have the courage to assemble and do what needs to be done and take back their country. As others have mentioned though, he's got several other conventional assets and means to project war before the nuclear option, but based on the theater risk, pushback, and the length of time in conflict, he could choose to escalate sooner, hence "escalate to de-escalate", to force a surrender. But then NATO tags in and the $h!t hits the fan. I'm no geopolitical scientist, but I was active duty for 21 years, and I can say this wouldn't turn out good for anyone.

I don’t think article 5 would apply in the case of Ukraine. Also,, while the use of tactical nukes would be unsavory by any standard, it is doubtful that Europe would want to risk the destruction of its glorious cities which would be very difficult to rebuild. America can also not afford to risk the destruction of major urban areas simply because Moscow chooses to defeat resistance in Ukraine by making large rubble into small rubble. Unfortunately many countries have already made choices that very well may have foretold what will be russias most practical options for its survival.
The final question will be whether or not Europe and America will decide to join Ukraine in being destroyed by nukes simply to “teach Russia a lesson” or to continue to pretend that they are the masters of the globe able to punish this or that country with sanctions or military action and themselves remain without a scratch.
Arming Ukraine in the manner that was done was not enough to either prevent or defeat an invasion. This was done in the spirit of proxy war against a geopolitical rival.
Russia must prevail against Ukraine in order to either barter down the sanctions, or have a prize (the worlds largest garden) to defray the cost of catastrophic sanctions until collateral economic mechanisms can be developed to make up for same.
So if Putin needs to use nukes, he will, and or is unlikely the west will respond in kind. Russian cities are much easier to evacuate and rebuild than American ones. Russia doesn’t have the severe social problems of America so they will cooperate with each other to rebuild, America will resemble mad max.
So while it might have seemed like a romantic notion to flood Ukraine with too little too late stingers and javelins and military intel and drones,, all this has done is increase the damage to the infrastructure, that won’t be paid by Russia.
And has obviously shown Russian forces incapable of winning this war conventionally, so their remaining choice to secure the country may well be the use of tactical nukes.
Nobody wants this to happen for many reasons. But if nato is now scared of a no fly zone because it might draw them into a nuclear war,, why would Russia using tactical nukes make them less scared of this same fate, if anything it will make them realize how truly close to this end all of us really are.
The fact is that the west is not in as much control over the world as we think and the longer we deny this fact the more danger we remain in.

We're doing it anyway because it's the right thing to do, and sometimes you must suffer hardship for the sake of what is right. Our ancestors did the exact same thing during the Second World War, this is nothing compared to what they went through.
Secondly, you're overstating the social problems in America. By a long way. America is not on the brink of civil war lmao.
Thirdly, this idea that Russia has no social issues is actually hilarious. You genuinely believe the Russian propaganda? There has been mass protests across Russia. There is a tonne of Russian support for Navalny, who is in prison for opposing Putin. Russia has tonnes of social issues, they just don't show it often because they get arrested if they do. Tonnes of Russians are fleeing the country. It's economy is dying. Russia will be the worst place to live in all of Europe very soon.

Do you remember a little event called the Russian grain embargo following. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? It killed the American family farm in the 80s. Was our suffering here in America worth it? No.
We aren’t currently aware of how severe our economic damage will be or the collateral damage to the other countries of the world causing negative recursive economic effects to America or others.
Our ancestors weren’t dealing with a national debt equal to their gdp. They also were dealing with imperial Japanese and nazi germany not the Russian federation. This is an important distinction for two reasons, 1) the conflict with Russia has the potential to spin out of control to a global thermonuclear war in a matter of hours, days or weeks, and the battle space in ww2 was far slower moving compared to modern times. 2) a victory by imperial Japan and nazi germany would be a horrific trajedy compared to a victory by the Russians over Ukraine.
Are the Russians capeable of what the Japanese and Germans were? Obviously not.
(To understate) there would be some tax law changes, a flag change, and some national pride being swallowed, but the experience of a defeated Ukraine wouldn’t be the experience of a defeated Poland or Nanking.
Another words the negative stakes for a Ukrainian loss are much lower, and the negative stakes for an escalation are much higher.
I referenced social problems that would prevent us from efficiently rebuilding our cities not civil war. (I’m not sure where you got that reference)
I never said there were no social issues in modern Russia,, I said they don’t have our “severe social problems that would hinder our rebuilding of our cities after a nuclear strike.
Perhaps you think the citizens of Chicago would evacuate better and rebuild better than the citizens of Moscow?
Perhaps you think the collective masonry and carpentry skills of New York are better than those of at.Petersburg?
Maybe you think the citizens of Los Angeles would get along better after a nuclear blast than the citizens is Saratov? Interesting.

Since Ukraine is not part of NATO, Russia could probably use nuclear weapons without worrying about a nuclear retaliation since NATO isn't obliged to defend Ukraine militarily.

Allow me to point out a detail that requires correction, it is regarding this (unfortunately) ---> 7:31
Modern nuclear weapons have gone a long way since the beginning of the 21st century and the introduction of novel materials and other compounds.
Managing a nuclear let alone thermonuclear explosion while limiting its explosive energy to sub-decatonne range is a feat in its own, as well as a good indication of the level of practical understanding of the particle physics fundamentals.
As wrong as it might sound (exploding things with the purpose of killing other human beings is actually always wrong don't get me wrong) - but there is a much wider spectrum of practical use for the fission weapons of today, especially as deep ground or hard frontal defense lines penetration articles where the traditional ground/air offensive strategies would incur unacceptable loss of life or in situations where time is of critical importance for the initiating side.
    ***EDIT***
This was kind of perplexing ---> 8:46 ...all it needs to do is convince itself that something or someone poses an existential threat...all right...isn't that logical? I mean, because the way you presented that seems as if that's unreasonable or wrong. Should Russia instead opt for others to analyze, judge and convince its government and its people of their national security? That is surely a wet dream of the US and North Atlantic Alliance and of course that is wrong.

Thank you for your opinion, but if the U.S. and N.A.T.O. kept their nose out of ukraine, there WAR would've been over a long time ago. Since the U.S. and N.A.T.O. don't listen and just keep coming in with MISSILES, well the U.S., N.A.T.O., and ukraine will pay a high price.

Russia doesn't want to conquer Ukraine, what they want is to force Ukraine to recognise the territory from the south as part of Russia. Like they did in Finland.

I dont get it why would he use a nuclear weapon so close to his own backyard. The fallout would affect his troops on the ground and people in his own country. Tactical or not.
