It is absolutely criminal how underrated this film still is. The movie completely reinvented the game of horror. Literally explained why certain horror tropes exist in such a fun creative way!
I love this being a commentary on slasher films and how they needed to evolve. If you didn't follow the "formula", the ancient ones (the audiences) would be upset and they wouldn't get a sequel, their world would be ended.

This is one of my all time favorite movies, if only because it's hilarious, and they came up with a plot that can almost sort of explain nearly every other horror movie. It's a love letter to genre films and has so much craft and sooooooo many Easter eggs for major horror franchises. Just a brilliant job by everybody. I get it about the ending because it goes into absurdity, but I can't think of another way to end that movie either.
I absolutely love this film, I highly recommend watching it at least one more time. The first time I saw it I loved it, but hated the ending. Upon each rewatch I enjoyed it more, plus there’s just a lot going on and it’s fun to pick up new things with each watch. A criminally underrated film!
The directer said nothing else worked because all of the other sacrifices in orher countries failed (remember the children defeated the monster in their class room) if you watch ot closely you see all of the other places failed, it showed the pther countries. They only needed one group of sacrifices to go as planned to keep the Old Gods at bay. Since all of the others failed accross the globe and they were the last ones and they failed the gods woke up. I assume everyone in that facility died, if not by the monsters then by being crushed when the Old Gods arose.
I think you two are missing the point of the movie. The movie is a meta commentary on horror films. Note that the horror tropes are culturally informed - that is why Japan has the long-haired ghost, whereas the U.S. scenario is a slasher because these tropes represent the sort of horror films that come out of the respective countries. The thing about the characters in the movie is that they are archetypical characters in American slasher films. The archetypes don't accurately represent any of their actual personalities, but it doesn't matter because they are characters in the movie. The underground facility is the film industry that organizes these scenarios to appease the "ancient gods," i.e. the movie-going audience. These things are happening to the characters in the film because that is what fans of horror films want to see. The "blood ritual" is the movie itself - created to entertain the audience. This is why questions about how the monsters were captured and what not are irrelevant. This isn't a horror movie as such, it is a movie about horror movies.
I saw a fan theory that the planners messed up because Dana is the Fool and Marty is the Virgin/Final Girl 😉 P.S. The failure in 1998 was a reference to The Faculty. Hope you watch that one soon 😜

I kinda feel like you missed a big chunk of the central premise and that led you to fixating on some things that were either explained if you're paying attention or were part of the meta satire of the film and don't need explaining, but I'm not sure if that's the case or if that's just how the edit of the reaction made it seem. Still, great movie, the moment to moment reactions were mostly pretty fun and I'm always glad that people enjoy one of my favorite films enough that they might (one day) go back and catch the parts that they might have missed (or maybe you picked them up in editing this reaction if you do your own edits!). First time I've checked you guys out, I'll have a look at some of your other reactions!
This movie could perfectly explain why people make dumb decisions in horror movies and if it was canon I wouldn’t even be mad. This movie is a fun time and easily one of the best 2010s horror movies in my opinion .🍿
Also they have been working "with" the Old Gods since the beginning of time, humans have figured out how to keep them at bay, the deal was the sacrifies needed to be made in a particular way to keep them sleeping (they wake up once a year and require sacirfies to stay asleep and below the ground.

Ok the point of this movie isn't really about the orginization or the gods it's a comintary on how we as the audience are like the Ancu=iant Ones as we expect to see certaint things happen in our horror movies and if we don't we tend to rise up and destroy a career at times unintentionally. I do love this movie and it's twists and turns as well as the campy side of it. They do a good job of keeping it scary but also giving it a slightly lighter side as well. So many different horror movies in this one...Hellraizer,IT,Evil Dead and a few more that I can't remember now which is cool. Glad you had fun with it.
Also they organization hand picked them, there never was a cousin, they manipulated them to lure them. They used chemicals to make him believe he had a cousin and cabin.

The stoner guy is Fran Kranz. The only other thing I have ever seen him in is "Dollhouse" and he made me cry so bad by the end. Good actor.
