That is a fantastic video on jerkbaits. Thank you, and I learned so much. I found that many anglers don't trust jerkbaits, but through my simple experience those baits are one of the most effective, specially when you know the fish is there but it is not committed to any other baits you throw. It simple teases them so much that they've got to strike it. Before coming to Canada I had experienced the effectiveness on many fishes such as peacock bass, wolffish, snooks, and many Amazon region fishes species. Now, this is my 1st season here in North America, and it worked in every day I went out for fishing either for largies or smallies. Now, the only think I never saw in videos and I personally do, is that sometimes I use smallest jerkbaits, with 70mm, specially with clear water, with translucid, almost transparent colors. I think that the fish must realize that something is there, but shouldn't see exactly what it is. In that confusion, with all that jerk movement going on, they simply blow it. And event with this small bait I manage to get, 16, 18 and 19 inches bass with no problem. Since bass sucks it, if it is lighter it easily "jumps" into his mouth when they open it. And this 70mm have only 5 grams...

I retired after a long working life. When I was a kid, I fished everyday during summer break using a 10ft split cane rod, Nottingham reel and float supporting a weighted leader with maggot on the hook. Then sea fishing, which I found rather crude and more about watches, shades and shirts.
I've just discovered the fishing that you do, 58 years later! It is your fault! You cost me quite a bit in 2 piece rods, decent reels and things that are inanimate but wiggle!😉
I bought a medium moderate action spinning 7' rod, 3000 reel (for capacity), 1st mono for the grip, then braided for its small diameter with strength and fluro leader for its sinking quality.
(Psst! I did buy some floats and hooks/weights to learn how the rod behaves with the reel whilst maybe catching some "maggot suckers" before I embarrass myself with multiple hooks).
Going to an Okeechobee log cabin on a canal, next month for 6 days... armed with knowledge from you, an ultra-lite rod also, with a 1000 reel, (along for the light tackle days). A bottle of single malt, for no reason whatsoever.
Thanks for your explanations and talking "normally" and not as a smart-ass parent!
I'll be taking you with me incidently.... on my phone though, for the learning moments.
    Thanks again.

Hey Bass Geek. Never fished a Jerkbait before. Found 2 OzarkTrail 2 treble hook Jerbaits for cheap. The next Week fishing July 13th 2024. After watching your video. Felt confident to give them a try. I caught 3 Bass twice as long as the jerk bait it's self. But I caught some! I noticed the 2 treble hook baits come to the top of the water evenly. Trying to figure out how to add weight to the 2 treble baits to get them to sink at a slow rate. Then on the following Monday I ordered to J 300 KVD Stike King Jerkbaits. Haven't tried them yet. I notice the Jerk bait cast very well in a little wind. Threw them on a 7 ratio baitcaster on 30 pd braid. 6'8 MH FAST rod. It seemed to work very well from the bank too. Thanks for your info on Jerkbait fishing. Shawn.

@@BassGeek My favourite is Rapala X-RAP, the 10cm variant, the lake I prefer has very dark brown water, not muddy, just dark. Visibility is about three feet (approx. 1 meter?) and the fish there love all the crazy colors. This season I'm gonna try blue/silver and olive green and see how it goes. Last year the biggest pike I got was 100cm long, about 9-10kg one. Also the perch there can get quite darn big, not as big as bass you guys got in the US though. They tried to grow bass in some lakes but afaik, they didn't survive. Too bad, those things must be a lot of fun to catch. Pictures, sure thing! I always photograph my catch anyway. :D

Something else to add is generally with a jerkbait, fish are looking UP and they're going to be swimming upward to get at it so you'll want to use it a little above the level where the fish are at. You won't catch as many when they're looking down on a bottom bite. If they're feeding on baitfish like shad, you'll get more jerkbait bites. If they're on bottom, you're better off with a shaky head or jig

This 101 video was better then your crank bait 101 video. but it was not easy hearing or seeing what you were doing with your head and back turned. A bluetooth headset for computers or phones can often be used as a improvised mic if you have your head turned from the camera alot.

I just watched your video. I have a couple jerk baits in my box that I rarely use, and have fished them incorrectly when I did use them. I applied the techniques that I learned from your video and quickly caught my first smallmouth of the year (which was a goal of mine), and then got a small largemouth shortly after that. Thanks for the video! It was exactly what I was looking for when I came to CZcams to learn more about jerk baits 🫡

Suggestion sir, since you’re a Lew’s guy I suggest that you try their 6’7” jerkbait special rod. It is very kool for working these baits. It has a shorter handle so it’s not hitting your forearm all day, plus I feel like I have better control over where you place that bait.

When u finally figure it out, you'll not set it down. You can catch so many fish it's not even funny. It's so much fun when they are on that bite. You can get em on every cast sometimes. It's a good way to get a whole school fired up.
