I lost internet for about four weeks a couple months back and I have never been so productive. I didn't realize my addiction was that bad until it was taken away from me. Folks, this totally works. --V
Real, continuous visual progress on the wall in front of you is another benefit of finishing the tasks.. It works because whenever I watch CZcams, i can still see all the progress I've made and think about my job until my entire focus go to the work I still need to do.
That makes so much sense! And it explains why I have a wave of creativity while I’m at work, I work on an assembly line, it can be quite mind numbingly boring, but I noticed all of my best ideas or story lines have come from those hours of boredom. :) Thank you so much for the advice, I will definitely use this tip!
You’re very lucky! I paint a painting and stare at it for months before I decide if I need to do more or not. That’s the kind of ocd you don’t want. I finish always, but if I would have just put the original painting up, it would have probably sold by the time I posted the “ finished “ version.❤
@@CozzyKorner for sure! I've had so many times like that and what Dries speaks about in this video, and for me it's just too painful ... so my default now is to say what I'm going to do out loud, and then I just do it
Funny. I was just thinking about how important it is to be bord once in a while. My 8 year old kept telling me he was bored, so I had to explain to him that it can be a good thing.
boredom is my companion often..it is why i finally do something cause it is so boring and pathetic.. ...i run away from everyone so as not to be distracted.... away where i know no-one....hello boredom...loneliness....and finally creation.... not so comfortable..iti s what it is...
I agree, I use the box it every day, especially overnight (9pm-9am) especially so i dont reach for my phone first thing in the morning and fall into a YT/ social media rabbit hole for hours and instead get tonnes done I recommend the taller one so you can also lock away NSwitch and any other long console gadgets
Thank you… your content is really helpful and on point. This video makes me remember my old days when I was in high school and i didn’t like study, so drawing was much more fun for me. I could spent 5 hours drawing and not even feel tired or bored. But nowadays the technology has improved so much so I got so easily distracted whenever I’m online. You rephrase the unproductivity in a very relatable way and it’s easy to follow.
Boredom, it's a superpower. When we not entertained while using phone, watching TV and so on, we start to feel bored. I love it because it is when i have some new thoughts. When we are not entertained, we say it bored but i feel our brain starts to wander in the land of thoughts, experiences, knowledge that we have gained up until that point. Brain loves experimenting things and when it couples with our curiosity, it creates some random ideas based on our thoughts, experiences, knowledge. Such ideas would lean into what we actually think about during the state of boredom. Creatives behaves like a kid because of their curious mind and never want to stick to a rule. We want to experiment and never always want to stick to a rule. Kids are curious. They randomly do anything without thinking much and creatives should be the same. Adult behaving like a kid looks abnormal to the non-creative people. Be like a kid and see how our creative life changes.
I definitely think there is something to what you are saying. I created this channel with a couple of friends stuck in a house up in the hills with not much to do. However I would argue it is good to find a balance of distraction and focused uninterrupted work. Also when not creating it is important to do other very different creative things which will help to inspire the main creative focus.
My fear with this box is, my wife already cannot answer my calls in a timely fashion. If she uses this box and when I am hanging on a cliff and could only call her once to save my life, . . . . . . . . . . . silence.
Hey Dries, very real insights, i also wonder if that's why some of my best paintings were done when i was suffering from depression, grief, like a survival switch going off to make you create something completely opposite to how you feel, as if creating something to take refuge from ourselves. Keep it up fellow canvas tickler👩
I found your videos few weeks ago, keep watching them one by one ( or two three at a time:) really engaging and brilliant stuff you put out! This box is great..does it come in bigger sizes to lock children in?:) the benefits would be amazing, i wouldn’t get distracted and they would get into the powerful state of boredom:)) phones and everything else can stay out.
Same. Maybe it would be useful to print out a collage of the references. That way it is tangible and accessible. I saw some artists having collages or books near their drawing boards. When you notice that you need more reference you can always schedule the time to research more.
I can’t time what I do, but locking stuff up is a good idea, not just for creativity, but to find alternatives to entertain yourself. Idk why I keep watching “what to” art videos. I have chronic pain now and getting arthritic hands. Anyway, that “you too can be rich and famous” bit is old and unrealistic
Watching your videos is anything but boring, because along with making intelligent points, you are a natural comedian! 🤣 It's interesting how the author wrote "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" using the technique you described. A few other authors used a technique of asking their subconscious mind for ideas on new books before sleeping. One in particular would dream a new chapter every night and then type it out! I read of these authors in "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" by JM. Thank you for tips on starting the project, too.
