  • Cecil Day-Lewis often writing as C. Day-Lewis, was an Anglo-Irish poet and Poet Laureate from 1968 until his death in 1972. He also wrote mystery stories under the pseudonym of Nicholas Blake.
During World War II, Day-Lewis worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information for the UK government, and also served in the Musbury branch of the British Home Guard. He is the father of actor Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, and documentary filmmaker and television chef Tamasin Day-Lewis.
Saturday Night Theatre was noted as the major drama of the week on BBC Radio 4, until it was scrapped as a programme strand in 1996. Shorter plays continued to be broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday evenings from 1996 until the relaunch of the channel's schedule in April 1998 by James Boyle, when single dramas were removed from the Saturday evening schedule. Since 1998, the main weekly play on the station has been The Saturday Play, a daytime programme that runs for 60-90 minutes.
There have since been campaigns to bring back Saturday Night Theatre, but in the context of BBC budget cuts, that have included the 2010 axing of Radio 4's Friday Play (established in 1998, when Saturday Night Theatre was abolished), any return looks unlikely.

In a time when everyone seems too busy to find time to say vegetables and has taken to saying veggies instead I love hearing beautiful, interesting words, descriptions and dialogue that almost sounds like poetry! Its a Sunday dinner, Christmas morning and the 4th of July fireworks for the ears and the brain!!!

I know exactly what you mean. When reading a good book you realise just how many words have been lost or shortened. I particularly dislike 'kids' instead of children, why did baby goats seem a fitting replacement? Language is so wonderful, when used elaborately I'm often asked if "I've swallowed a dictionary". Shame.

I don't mind shortened words in general, but for some reason, that word "veggies" does irritate me; it sounds infantile somehow.

Nicholas Blake was the pen name used by Post Laureate Cecil Day Lewis ( yes ! Father of you know who ! ). He wrote a series of witty ,
      stylish detective stories featuring
      Nigel Strangeways. Well worth
      reading !!

A cold war spy thriller with nice domestic touches. Little Lucy really does play an important part in this exciting drama.

The play is based on 'The sad variety'
    Synopsis:
Nigel Strangeways is asked by the Security department to guard Professor Wragby and his daughter. Wragby has a secret the Russians are out to get. But by the time Nigel arrives, the Russians have already kidnapped the Professor’s daughter. I greatly appreciate all downloads of radio plays but a synopsis of the play would be of more use than a description of the sad demise of radio plays. If I buy a book I don't just look at the title but at the description of the story to see if it would be one that
    I would enjoy.
A pet hate is children being voiced by adult women, thank goodness this is no longer done.Having said all of this I do thank you for the opportunity to hear this play.

@@2msvalkyrie529 What’s with the snide remarks just because someone asks a legitimate question? I find the huge block of the same info over and over, along with the long lists of links to be fairly useless. It’s not the listener’s job to compile info or give a synopsis. And has anyone ever looked at those links? There’s one there about “eugenics”?????? Seriously? Do any of you even know what “eugenics” IS???? Every time anyone just asks if this so called Chesterton could a tiny synopsis or some basic info about a specific upload some of you people jump down their throats and insult them with snide remarks. Everyone has a right to ask and express an opinion. This Chesterton “person” is not just some guy. It’s an organization with an agenda. Do a little research.
