- Bill & Britt are big fans of Myst, the unique puzzle game from 1994, and they decided it was time for them to have their own version of the iconic book! But why stop there? What if it was a book, from MYST, that let you play MYST too?

LIV = 54 XD
Love the Myst series
I Have Been a Fan, for so many years & It's been amazeballs... BUT.. Please.. Please... Please tell me you didn't destroy that treasure of an old book - .... that makes me so sad... so so so terribly sad..
17:48 That moment when you realize you’re going to hell.
I got a question what kind of foam do you use
Very cool prop, but please don't destroy something antique to make prop.
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if thousands of antique book collectors suddenly cried out in terror
Kudos on your creativity, but instead of messing up a cool old book, maybe make and custom bind your own book? You are makers, and it is not that difficult. Hate to see an old book get ruined.
It's the Graphlex handle all over again =D
@@picklesnoutpenobscott3165 There's no real value to these books *apart* from the fact that it was used in Myst. They're literally just reprints of old magazine articles, produced as cheaply as possible. Usually you buy stacks of these kinds of books by the *metre* to fill out bookcases for set dressing, nobody is after individual books of this type.
@@JamesChurchill Whew, OK. I thought it was 100 year old hand bound books. Thank you!
Apparently this is a very common book, they made a lot of them and they are still available
As someone who has made hollow out books a few time. In the future, mix up 2 part glue, 1 part water. Using a brush you coat all the sides of the book. The water will help pull the glue in to the pages to help secure it. Let it dry. Then you can cut out to your hearts content. Then once you have your hollowed out area, use the same glue to glue in the side (similar to your epoxy spread).
Thanks for the tip!
Y'ALL... FANTASTIC WORK! And I have to say, I was so happy when I saw your box of resin tints/colorants. :D I can never seem to keep my resin tints or silicone pigment containers looking tidy.
We just had to accept reality and fill it with paper towels XD
Yay! Crafsman!
Yo nice to see you hear buddy
Awesome build. On a side note "issue LIV" means "issue 54" since L is the Roman letter for number 50
Thank you!
this is upsetting. i...i couldn't cut this book up >__
I totally understand! I had to keep reminding myself that there were thousands made, it's not valuable, and Harper's digital archive goes back to 1850. My palms still broke a sweat 18:35...
Aye. I loooove Myst, and I want to make my own Myst book, but I'd use a dictionary or thesaurus, not something like this, even if it were less authentic. Hurting books is a 'no'.
Same! I wouldn’t be able to do it. I haven’t made the Myst book but I have made other fake books using the boxes that are made to look like an old book. Cover it, age it and add tons of tiny details and you have a hollow yet sturdy book to use for anything.
Man, that intro was just perfect ❤ This game is so good, it's nice to see it still being talked about like this!
I about cried at the intro, so good to see that!
The sound effects when they clicked on the book made me shiver
@@aknee3042 Same!
Aww we're so glad you guys enjoyed the video!
MYST!? I haven't heard that beautiful name in a long time... Brought a tear to my eye to see this :')
Right? The nostalgia!
Go check out the trailer for the new Myst with optional VR! It's GORGEOUS.
@@IanWatson can you post a link please?
Myst was my very first video game EVER and holds a very special place in my heart. So many happy childhood memories of me and my dad playing through the series, solving puzzles together and and developing our own theories around the infinite amount of lore in the game. Sadly, not many people my age know it (I started playing it just around the time that URU released), so I don't get to talk about it with other people as much as I would like to. But every time someone even vaguely mentions Myst, it fills my heart with endless amounts of joy and nostalgia. Thank you for making this project! It made a weird nerd from the other side of the world very very happy :D
Aww that's so wonderful!
Pretty freaking awesome!!! I knew it would be. Been waiting for this one for a while now, wondering when you were gonna finish up. I remember playing MYST back in the day. A very cool game. And now you have made it even cooler! Thanks, guys!
Thank YOU for watching!
Fun fact, RIUM+ also has a DeLorean and cosplays as Doc Brown, he's a cool guy, I've met him at a convention many years ago. Of all the sources to use, his is by far the most detailed.
That's awesome!
Can confirm. He and I just finished making a Myst Island cake ;)
@@mekamade5614 And it is GLORIOUS :D
This is just one of the coolest props I've seen recently! Great job. My parents were really into Myst when I was young and then I played it later when I was old enough. Fantastic game with so much mystery and numerous good puzzles that were slightly frustrating, but a blast. Such good memories. Thanks for making my Monday better! :)
You're so welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
I took Myst down in a 3 day weekend marathon when I was in my early teens. It was a breakthrough for me at the time, having been diagnosed ADD. It taught me that I could focus, if I was interested enough. And man was that game captivating. Even more so the sequels. It has been the benchmark that I hold to my adventure puzzle gaming experiences to date. I played all the way through the third game, Exile, taking about two days each time. And Riven was such a leap forward, I actually bought the coffee table book they produced about its development, “From Myst to Riven”. I’d always hoped the world of Myst and the D’ni would reassert itself as gaming progressed, especially in mobile platforms, but sadly it seems Cyan has mostly relegated it to the “History” shelf for now, with only a simple app port of the first two games.
Fireproof games have released what I think of as the spiritual successor to the Myst series in their app based puzzlers The Room 1-3 and Old Sins. Worth checking out if you haven’t.
I've only just started watching this vid, but THANK YOU! If anyone was going to do a MYST build it was gonna be you guys! This game was pre-internet, back when PAPER books were mainstream, and was such a precursor to every puzzle-solving/adventure game that's come since. The fact that technology has now caught up to what was pure fantasy back then is amazing. Who would imagine that books could talk to the reader as if you where in the same room? Thank you Britt and Bill for making another old nerd happy, yet again!
You're so welcome! We have been wanting to make this for a long time :)
Super-great work as always, and I'm digging these inventive intros (MYST, AC). Looking forward to seeing what's next!
Thank you!! We try to have fun in everything we do :)
Riven being Britt's favorite = great taste in games.
Stay classy you two.
You too!
Nice game but 6 cd's swapping was sometimes frustrating.
GREAT intro, sound effect sent shivers. I must admit that Riven was my favourite though. Good choice Britt.
Thanks so much for watching!
I said it on Patreon, but I have to say it here too . . . OMG!!!!! This brings me such joy! I was a huge Myst and Riven fan (totally agree with Britt on Riven being the best). Spent so much time on these games. This was just a genius way to do this whole project!!!! Took me right back to one of my fondest memories and favorite games of all time! And the two of you are so adorable!!!
Thanks guys!!!
Aww thanks so much! We super appreciate your support :) It's been so fun to share our nerdy passion with so many people!
Love seeing you both do a project. You two have a great chemistry on camera that's quite unique to all the making channels I watch. Hope to see more.
Aww that's so kind of you to say!
This build made my day!!!
Awesome work!!! Lots of memories with this build!!!!
Aww thanks so much!
holy crap! i had both myst and riven when i was a kid! this brings back so many memories! thank youuuuuuuu!!!
You're welcome! So glad you enjoyed it!
Atrus would be proud. So much love in this video/build, right from the homage opening of the video!
GIR: Ooooooooooooooh!
Zim: A Hunter-Destroyer ma--
GIR: What is it?!
Zim: A Hunter-Destroy--
GIR: What is it?!?!
I'm mostly curious which port they install on the phone. I've seen a couple, but most are riddled with issues
It's called realMyst
That looks so great. Another project added to my list.
I might try for a tablet. Maybe try embossing and gilding the cover. I haven't done that yet.
That would be awesome!
this is amazing!! I'm so excited for the upcoming documentary as well...kickstarter stole my money for that project earlier this year. I think i need one of these in my life!
Can't wait!
Love when Bill and Britt work together and help each other out ❤️
It's our favorite way to work!
Gotta say it's fantastic seeing regular content being uploaded again!
We're loving it too :)
This is the coolest thing. I've always dreamed of making a Myst book like this for all of the ages.
Right? We're so stoked!
Really cool project but I think by far the best part was both of your giddiness and overall excitement.
Ah! This is so nice!
While my dad had both MYST and Riven, I grew up on the latter. I remember having to swap out disks!
Looks super fun to do and I might have to pick up one of those old books just for this purpose!
SO many disks. Thanks so much for watching!
I laughed so hard when I saw you guys making this. I was playing myst yesterday due to nostalgia and I'm so excited for the vr version
Heck yeah!
Great work guys!
Thanks so much!
This is such a great idea! I love the video with both of you (not that the solo videos arent also amazing)!
Thanks so much for watching!
+1 serious coolness B&B!
Myst was one of my favorite games. I still have all my drawn maps and solutions... and the soundtrack was one of my *environmental music* CDs for decades.
As always... awesome work!!
That's fantastic!
Do you have a ventilation system when printing with ABS? I just started selling some designs printed in ABS and I typically move the printer near an open window which isn’t ideal during Indiana’s November/December. Any tips?
We have an enclosure! You can see how we made it here: czcams.com/video/NqlWS4Tzb9Y/video.html
This is literally one of my favorite games from my childhood. Partially because it was just so good and partially because the memories I have playing it with my dad. He wasn't really into video games but he liked this one and we would take turns playing it (me while he was at work and him in the evenings) and sharing our notes, hand drawn maps, and passcodes. Riven stumped us and we never ended up finishing it but we had a lot of fun with both.
That's really fantastic =)
How many people watching this never finished Myst? 👀
Why you gotta call us out like that lol
It's a tough game! Totally worth a replay :)
Don’t call me out like that lmaooo
How many weren't even born??
there are a ton of hints and guides and whatnot out there... it's well worth it
you did a wonderful job on both the opening sequence and the book itself. It's amusing to me that this also happened to come out while Cyan was doing their Myst island cake contest too on twitter, so things are suddenly a lot more Myst-y online, not that i'm complaining. ^_^ I have a sudden urge to go replay some of the games.
I honestly had no idea and it was a super exciting discovery
Love this one! This was one of my favorite games!
Aww yay! Thanks so much!
That intro, Awesome! Man, I love you guys!
Did you ever play The 7th Guest?
Thanks so much! Oh yeah! HA! It was a really shoddy Myst clone, but kind of bananas and kind of worth playing as an artifact of the time.
@@punishedprops 7th Guest came out before Myst, but I agree that it's shoddy lmao
Iv never heard of myst but I will 100% check it out :)
Also great work as always!
I would love to see more props Brit loves from her games , It would be so interesting on the different taste is games/props, if there is ofcourse :P.
Cheers you two!
It's an awesome game, we love it so much!
Nice work :) I wonder, could you have used your vinyl cutter to make the placement stencil? Then, just applied the glue over top of the stencil, lay the letters, and remove the vinyl? I've been eying a cricut maker lately, so I keep trying to think of new ways to use a good vinyl cutter for prop making shenanigans....
Yeah that's also an option!
My eyes lit up seeing this video! Not many people know about Myst, and its other 2 games Riven and Exile. I used to play the whole trilogy with my dad when I was younger, we had the walkthrough books and everything about it. I was fortunate to inherit the books and game set from him when he passed away a few years ago and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Those game discs hold hours of memories for me and I hope they do for you guys as well. (the ironic thing about growing up playing this game was that we played it in the early 2000s and I was just barely a teenager at the time. thankful I grew up with awesome games like this)
That's absolutely fantastic, thanks for sharing your MYST story and watching our video!
A fun project and a cool video! As a follow up, you guys could do a video showing how to age/distress a new book (like a cheap journal) for all those who might be squeamish about cutting into an old book. Maybe hide a small tablet in it or have a little build off to see who can think of the most creative way to make a hide-a-book
Thanks so much for watching!
Were the files for the 'MYST' lettering and the frame ever posted anywhere? I've looked around but I might be missing something.
They were not
@@punishedprops That’s good to know, many thanks for the reply ❤️
Wow! I haven't thought about Myst in forever! Now I wanna play it again.
Right? Nostalgia forever!
Awesome project!
Thank you!
I've never made a prop before but I love watching your videos while I'm making things in my shop.
That's great to hear, thanks so much!
I loved this video. So awesome!
Thank you so much for watching!
The VR version of Myst is looking awesome! Can't wait to play it, I'll be able to visit the Myst island for real.
We are SO excited
Bill, for cutting our the screen area on the paper sheet, you probably could have put the phone in the case and turn it on to a bright white screen. Then traced the exact space onto the paper for cutting out.
SMART
Love this intro so much haha . Very suprising and great video
So glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video and build. Love Must. Mahalo for sharing!:)🐒
Thanks so much for watching!
Yoooooo that intro... this whole thing!!!! is so nostalgic holy crap i loved that WAAAYYY to much lmao this game came out when i was born and my grandma got me into it when i was about 10. THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER.
Aww thanks so much! We're so glad you liked it!
Have you guys tried out the new chrome paint by Culture Hustle (the people that made the blackest black)? Please do a review on it! Would love to see how it compares to the alclad and graphite techniques!
We have not!
First and only game I took elaborate notes while playing in order to beat it.
You have to! I love seeing people's MYST notebooks
@@punishedprops I need to see if I can even find them. I want to play it again, and I’m gonna need those notes. I mean I still have my TIE Fighter PC game and all the disks, I’m bound to have my MYST stuff too.
I wrote out the language Of D’ni from the Riven guide. I made one character equal a letter and memorized it and still use it today.
That's fantastic!
Instead of measuring and hoping you get the right location for the final window, you could just turn the phone on and trace the outline of the screen. Awesome job!!
Yeah that's much smarter XD
YAAAAAAAAS!!!!!!! The red pages! The blue pages!!!!! That fireplace puzzle!!!!! The music!!!!! YAAAAAAAS
Best game ever!!
My roommate in college was obsessed with MYST. We’re still close friends, may have to make one of these for him! Fun build.
That would be awesome!
I have always wanted to see someone make a good xenomorph costume without spending a million dollars,
you guys should try that.
Thanks for letting us know you're interested in that build! We have our current schedule worked out, but there could be room for this kind of video in future plans.
Does it bother anyone else that they wrecked that book?
yes :/
Looks pretty awesome. Well done.
Thanks!
Although I cringe at the thought of cutting into any book, old or not, I have books on my shelves which I may never open again and never read. Putting something to good use which would never be used again for its original purpose is a good thing. You've made a great job of this! You could maybe do some 'found poetry' with the offcuts, or paste them onto a box as decoration. It's all good.
Yeah! We're super stoked to give this book new life and love!
That's so awesome!
Thanks for watching!
The hammering just makes it sound like a legit workspace. I bet it's one of your interns just banging on stuff for effect :D
Hah! I wish
It was great to see/hear Britt more in this one!
Aww thanks!
Well played Sir. Well played 👏
Thanks so much!
That's pretty awesome!
I've been thinking about making an ELO ufo Light to go on my wall. I've been thinking of several inexpensive ways to do it, but keep getting stumped. Clear tubing with LEDS inside and frosted, Making molds and doing a resin pour... Think I'll have to draw up some plans.
Yeah! You got this!
The intro was perfect!!
Thank you! We were super excited to make it :)
What kid of foam do you use???

I just tried Riven for the first time, found a copy of it at a Goodwill. Tho, even with an iMac G3, changing the disc for every new area is a hard mechanic to go back to. Might just wait for the VR version to be released to finish it.
We're SO excited for MYST in VR!
J'ai adorée le jeu, votre démo donne des idées 😁 superbe travail!
Thanks!
I loved how the ending of Riven lead into the beginning of Myst
Full circle!
Do know wher can I find a playable version of MYST online? I have been looking for years and I can't find it
I believe there are a few updated versions available on Steam
After the 25th anniversary release they were all put on GOG
Great build, but why didn't you color the book cover to match the book in game?
The cover is the same as in the game but the game's lighting makes it look a bit different
I *Loved* playing Myst! Was super fun and the graphics were awesome. I used to play at night when the kids went to sleep and it was really creepy for some reason being all alone on the island... Riven was fun but Myst was my favorite. Nice book!
That's wonderful!
teleport sound effect
I havent even watched the full video yet, but you got a thumbs up just for the idea and intro
Aww thanks so much!
I love the MYST book you made. The first MYST game I ever played was MYST 3 I bought for like 2 bucks from a Big Lots store and I was hooked. After that I went on a quest to find all 5 MYST games plus URU the complete chronicles. Now you can get all of them on Steam. I was glad to see the original creators working on new games Obduction and I think the newest they are still working on is called Firmament. I can't wait until it comes out.
So exciting!!
I hope Britt enjoys her game...and eventually let's Bill out! This is such a great project (even as my daughter-of-a-librarian-and-a-historian heart weeps for the book--yes, even knowing there are many more copies of it, I have a thing for old books)
Thanks so much for watching!
Lookin at my 25th anniversary edition MYST book with some side eye!
👀👀👀👀
Ah memories! I loved these games, Linking Books are so iconic!
Right?!
Will there be more Bill and Brit builds? I love the chemistry between you two!
Who knows!
Part of me is a bit sad that a 140 year old book (or at least the content) is gone, but I also played MYST and this is amazing!
We're super stoked to give this book new life! Otherwise it would have just sat on a shelf not being used by anyone
Fantastic intro!!!
Thanks so much!
Could you be able to make the samurai armor yet
So many memories with Myst. I have the first 2 actual books, book of Atrus and book of Ti'ana.
That's awesome!
I freaking love Myst. I would love a TV series of some sort
My design professor worked on Myst! I gotta send this to him and see if he enjoys it!
That's fantastic!
Very cool
Thanks!
2:25 ... Britt, L = 50 in Roman numerals. It's volume 54 ;).
Thanks!
This makes my heart happy!!
Aww yay!
@@punishedprops so many hours playing it on. So few hours beating it.
Wooooooooow!!! This is so cool!
Thanks so much!
one thing bothers me.. in the trailer the video is in the middle of the book.. not at the beginning :O
this equally hurts my soul and fascinates me haha so cool
Book mods are always that way I think. We're just stoked that this old forgotten book has new life and love with us now!
Easier way to plot out where the phone screen is probably would have just been put it in plac and bring up turn on one of those full screen flashlight apps. Then you could trace exactly where the perimeter of the veiwable screen is using the light showing thru the page.
Smart!
Forbidden Banana Pudding LOL
It IS!
Truly fab. :)
Thanks so much!
