“Tam lin” is actually a much more accurate and thematic name than the generic “fairy knight”. The origin for Tam Lin is from a Scottish folk tale where a human was kidnapped by the fairy queen and she gave him the name “Tam Lin”.
This is literally Morgan giving her knights new names. On top of which, “Tam lin” isn’t the human’s real name. Which correlates to the fake names Morgan gives to her knights.
Another example is Tonelico to Aesc. Tonelico is the japanese word while Aesc is the old english word but both have the same meaning. Idk why other people prefer tonelico than aesc since they have the same meaning..
As for knocnarea, in localization, they call it Cnoc Na Riabh.
In my opinion, LB6 in english localization is more than just translation. I think they did more on research on names and wording to match british stuff.
I think more people prefer Tonelico is because when she became a playable servant, she called herself Tonelico in the jp dubs... once she is released in na as playable, there will be people (i am one of them) that will simply get irritated when the dub says tonelico and the localisarion says aesc.
@@giantslug5258 fan translation are good but no further research. Unlike Aesc, they did more research than translating it. That is why Aesc is more official than tonelico.
@@dxsetsuna1528 i am talking about the freaking jp dub... go listen to the summoning dialogue of summer morgan... she literally introduces herself as tonelico... while i know that aesc is technically the more correct term to use, i am simply pointing out the fact that it is more grating on the eyes for some people (especially those who understands japanese) to hear the dub as tonelico and to get freaking aesc in the translation
@@giantslug5258 Then, there is nothing they can do about it. Even if you prefer tonelico than aesc (i myself knows japanese but a bit). Aesc is official and you cannot change that. Even the jp voice line says tonelico, it will still change it to aesc.

For example, Qin Shi Huang in jp dub is Shikotei. Xiang Yu is Kou. Yu Miaoyi is Yu-meiren. Chengong is Chinkyuu. That is how Japanese pronounce those Chinese names. What do you think will happen if they decided to keep those Japanese pronounce?
Same with Tonelico. You think they just decided to change and they can change? How about Nasu's opinion? I think he allows it so it changed to Aesc to be closer to British folklore. 😊
Honestly, while I'm not a fan of 'Tam Lin', I always found it weird for faeries living in a world where their species is the default option to call themselves 'fairy knights'. It would be like having a knight order calling themselves 'humans knights'.
So tam lin is better i guess.
For that I have to disagree. Think of it like this, for us, we are the only sentient species. There is no "other" for us. While on LB6, there are two sentient species. Humans and Faeries. So in that context, using the name of their own species as a prestigious title makes quite a lot of sense. And racism. After all, they are "Faerie Knights" and not "Human Knights". It's a title only reserved for the superior species, the faeries. You know, to show off their special-ness.

Like, humans are thrall warriors at best and cattle at worst in the LB6 timeline, never mind that they only live to 30 years old in that timeline. To the near immortal fairies, they’re practically dogs in comparison. Why would fairies, let alone the fairies of Camelot, use a title of renown for something like that?
@@diamondmetal3062 it's a trope in fiction. Even if the humans couldn't become knights, there are those that want. But they can't. So a name to flaunt the privilege for those that can, is chosen. Faerie Knights. It's to demonstrate the exclusivity of it. It's in the name. Something like that.

1) That would imply the faeries give way more importance on what humans think than what we're shown. Is there a reason to specifically discriminate against cattle?
2) If there was an attempt to discriminate, 'Faerie Knight' is actually a terrible way to do it, because it implies there could be other kind of knights.
Didn't know the localization team have their hands tied with Altria and Tam Lin. One thing that wasn't mentioned though was that someone(s) on the team very clearly injected politics into the game by explicitly giving Mordred masculine pronouns. Her profile and London chapter actually had to be edited because everyone was calling her a him. As far as I'm aware there's still one or two times in London at least that she's called a he. It was a huge thing on Tumblr to call Mordred trans and you would be called transphobic if you didn't agree so it pissed a lot of people off. It showed a lack of understanding of her character and her feelings towards her own gender for the sake of diversifying an already diverse game with the likes of d'Eon, da Vinci, Enkidu, and Astolfo.

Mordred never wants to be addressed as a girl for she is heir (in the old time heir is usually a boy)

I personally think that this is not an instance in which someone on the localisation team was injecting politics (at least, not intentionally) because Mordred is often referred to in universe as "son of King Arthur", and a son is typically called a "he". I think someone in the localisation team simply infers that Mordred uses he/him pronoun because of "son of King Arthur" thing.
@@muhammadfarisaulia567 I could believe that and I do want to give the localizers some benefit of the doubt because Japanese isn't gendered which makes it easy for someone's gender to come across as vague, but there was deep Fate discourse in online English spaces such as Tumblr with people vehemently declaring Mordred trans and referred to her with masculine pronouns before she was added to the game. In the OG Apocrypha light novels and character materials, however, the author Higashide said in no uncertain terms that she is a girl. I don't except the localization team to read the OG works the characters came from but a quick perusal of the Type-Moon wikia explained that she is a woman with a complicated view of her gender, but she is explicably not trans and doesn't desire to be a boy. I get they might have experienced some confusion reading through London or her profile to translate, but I also wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't research her properly (ie checking the LNs or character material) and instead found someone on Tumblr calling her a boy and just going with that.
@@purelysmetalnightcoreit's always so frustrating looking at people who are supposedly more open about gender as a concept force down a certain gender over characters with complicated view on genders. Are they not hearing themselves sounding like those narrow-minded boomers?
When Coming To The West came out, most people hated it because they thought it should be Journey To The West, but this reference makes sense, though not many younger people know it.
Speaking of controversies Emiya alter's was very much noticeable like in the original as far as I know as to why his skin as extremely dark was because of the overuse of his magic circuits to an extreme kinda like toasting bread on high temperatures for a while especially compared to regular Archer Emiya tho alter's the haircut got hit because of the context as to why he had it too something in the lines of prisoner or so I remember and they thought some might align that association to slavery most especially to black people (tbh I'd just say some bugger looking for clout would that) hence why Emiyalter has a skin tone more similar to his normal version than what it used to be.
One aspect of Emiya Alter's controversy was that Japanese people were being kind of racist about his skin, calling him "Detroit Emiya" online. Apparently, in Japan, it's a thing to say black people come from Detroit? And it's not necessarily meant in a kind way. I guess how offensive that is is up to the individual, but it was a known thing that was happening. The localizing team probably wanted to get away from that.
@@purelysmetalnightcore Huh I think I missed that section of the issue, I can see why it can be seen as racist and personally sad Emiya alter’s charred skin will never make the light of day for the NA server due to this kind of issue (I am on the standpoint that it shows Alter’s extreme use of his magic circuits that it shoots pass what Archer did) and Shinjuku really introduced such a cool and kickass cast and man was a bro during the CCC event (Made me camp the Fan tl for the CCC game cuz god Type moon when is the official CCC en tl when Extra and the Extella games get it)
@@Albert_Lecter03 Yeah the concept of why Emiya's skin is the way it is might be considered offensive by some because black people have definitely been insulted for their skin looking "burnt." I can see why the team lightened him. As for CCC, you can download the game off an emulator and there is an English fan patch. If you Google it you'll find the game and how to do it.

That's not their decision to make, especially since his skin color has nothing to do with his ethnicity. Also Albert's "sensitivity" somehow didn't affect Abigail even though he explicitly mentioned her in one of the interviews and she's censored on the CN server like a ton of other characters (and she's actually from USA what makes this siuation even more stupid in perspective).
FGO does have some of the best localization, especially when there’s a lot of controversy in that area now.
The one issue I have is their decision to use,”You lot” all the time for the second person plural, when “you” would suffice and sound more natural.
well i dont think thats the worse, I shuddered when Jalter used German words in Summer 3, Suddenly, and I just knew that some of it was so out of context. “Gespenster Ketzer” (that’s what she called her circle of artists) is simply translated as “Ghost Heretics”.
have to say in German Summer Jalter NP certainly sounds cool for non-German speakers "Völkermord Feuerdrache" which translates to "Genocide Fire Dragon". I just find it a bit problematic when you consider what “Völkermord” means and when you consider German History, and as a German I know how we see the stigma in the world

She's a chuuni character in summer. And stereotypically, chuuni type character likes to use foreign words, even if natively it doesn't quite make sense. With German being one of the most used language because of its "cool" factor.

I'm more concerned about her og avenger self using the wrong pronouns for her french NP. La Grondement du Haine is incorrect, it would be Le Grondement de la Haine in what is supposed to be her native language. When it come to her "German", it's more a case of her chunibyou craze making her use stupidly edgy words on purpose. Chunibyous are characters using incorrectly foreign words because they're supposed to sound cool, even there she could simply have replaced Vôlkermord by something else.

Even in the unchanged script of LB6, tons of "names" are used as titles and vice-versa, so I can understand why that was chosen. Fairy Knight was just the descriptor used for saying what a Tam Lin is, like "Sword of Promised Victory" is to Excalibur.
In fact, another 'forced' localization is the term Noble Phantasm itself. The japanese name is "Hogu", which translates to Heroic Treasure, but Stay Night itself provides the alternative spelling 'Noble Phantasm' in romanji (using Tattoi Gensō as the descriptor, which translates to Noble Fantasy/Illusion).
Noble Phantasm fits a lot better in my eyes. Heroic Treasure sounds like its an object, but not all NPs are objects, most are abilitys.

I have a real problem with the "A moment a planet is born" since it makes no sense, and if you play Lostbelt 6 it becomes plainly obvious why it should be "The moment a star is born". I understand why the mistake was made, since the word for star and planet are the same in Japanese, but still.
They're literally 2 years behind, that's plenty of time to understand the context of one of the most important story chapters in the entire game. Also their "waah waah, evil Nasu MADE us use Altria and Tam Lin, but not "star" instead of "planet"" sounds even more pathetic than it is.
Yeah it's kinda weird, I'm not on lb6 yet but "when a planet is born" is an odd choice, it's not like it happens on a different planet or something right? It's still earth
Lore wise, the use of planet instead of star kind of makes sense if you've finished LB6. And so to keep it as vague as possible, Altria's sword is also called the breath of the planet and LB6 is basically the precursor to the general Artorian legend.
@@ViApp0It is stupid, but I see why it happened. The problem stems from the translation of the title being done without LB6 being out in JP, as the first time it was translated was the Lostbelt Release Trailer. For some reason or another, they had to double down on it.
Technically the intent was for the title in Japanese to mean both at the same time, because Japanese allows you to do that. English is far more specific than that.
Something that irks me about not just FGO, but japanese media localisation in general is the translation of something being "like so much x". For example, in summer kiara's NP line she says something along the lines of "disappear like so much foam". I'm no linguistic expert, but making an implicit comparison of the qualities of A to the qualities of a vague quantity of B is clunky and really unnecessary

@@ssj5gogeta1310 Is it now? I've never seen that particular phrase outside of Japanese translations. Imagine if some rando on the street said "wow that fire hydrant is red like so many apples". Does specifying the second subject to be of a large quantity change its significance in some way? To me it feels odd at best and pretentious at worst, depending on how it's used. But again, I'm no expert so maybe there is some meaning behind it that I don't understand.

With that established, my impression was that it's one of those phrases that withstood the test of time, but its original context didn't. And it doesn't serve to emphasize quantity in a comparison. "So much" between "like" and an object being compared to just adds emphasis on the quality, usually how ephemeral or dismissible something is. Here are some example I found:
"The Menorah: A Monthly Magazine for the Jewish Home", Volume 23, 1897, page 24: "Have we been set upon the earth so like so much foam upon the waves?"
The Message translation of the Bible has a few instances:

When we consider how the story plays out, the JP title seems to fit pretty well. But if we take a step back and look at the NA title as a whole, it's not too far off either. Well, at least for me. I see it as a title that talks about themes like creating a new world and bringing it back to life. You know, like how a powerful ruler resurrected that dead world and how things happened with Cernunnos and all the origins. I think this title captures the big picture of how a new world is coming together after everything that went down in the Lostbelt. But hey, maybe that's just me lmao

Okay here is random localization fact, that is actually funny and not featured in story and seems to be localization team wordplay. Koyanskaya uses as a disguise name Tamamo Vitch - as everyone seems to understand it as if she is trying to claim to be one of Tamamo. The truth is.. Russian actually allows such thing as matronims - reference to mother as a replacement to a reference to the father, which are part of name. And if you will try to construct matronim from name Tamamo.. You will get exactly that. Tamamovitch. That basically means, that Koyanskaya haven't even once actually tried to pretend that she IS one of Tamamo - she just literally said, that she's not, but everyone fooled and even didn't thought twice about marking her as one of Tamamo)
Pan, in Spanish, also means bread. So when I read pan human history, as a Latino, I read bread human history.

tam Lin is a reference to the story of the same name. The titular tam Lin was given that name by the fairy queen. Which is literally what Morgan did with her knights. As like the human, it isn’t their real name.

I mean, these are some very small examples, the more pressing things are context related.
For example in the original jp, muramasa's and Shirou's "connection" wasn't implied at all, saying that at most, he might be a decendant of one of muramasa's students, whereas the na locilasation made it far less easy too understand.
I still see many people that say shirou is a decendant of muramasa because of that reason, when in fact, that isn't true.
Or the naming of certain lore parts in lostbelt 6, the decision to call the previously simply named "sub-bells" A-rays is really not a good idea since it comes into conflict with already established a-rays from notes.
There are a lot more misleading locilasation errors that slightly deviate from the original context....and those are the truly bad ones.....the ones that bring about misconceptions about certain aspects of the story.
Sure, stuff like altria, aesc or they/themdred are a nuicance but in the greater scheme they don't have a negative impact on the comprehension of the story

I'm totally ok with Tam Lin, I feel the name gives a better approach to the original fairy folklore. On the other hand, A*tria is a sin that should be pruned from proper human history.

I prefer the term Tam Lin. Cause Fairy Knight just sounds super generic and also...what about LITERLEY EVREY OTHER FAIRY KNIGHT?! There ALL Fairy Knights so calling those three Fairy Knight isnt anything special. Tam Lin acually sounds like a title that distinguishes them from those Horse Knights and any order Soldier in Morgans army.
As fore Altria, yeah I hate it. I ONLY youse the name Altria fore well...the Alters. Cause Altria sounds like a fusion of Alt and Artoria. ALTer, ArtoRIA Altria. So its a perfect name if Altoria sounds too clunky fore youre personal tastes.
Pretty sure "Alien God" was changed to "Foreign God" because "alien" is a problematic term to some people. Frankly I'm surprised they didn't call her "Undocumented God" or "Migrant God".
I must stress that much of the “Altria” controversy is not sensical.
People assume Nasu is being a foolish foreign person instead of learning why he came to the conclusion he did. This is because most people are simply not saying it correctly.
Try to imagine non-American dialect (Welsh, Japanese, etc.) and if you are speaking correctly, you will be able to hear “Arturia”.
So to say the name correctly you must either...
1. Pronounce the english translated name with a japanese accent
2. Use a welsh accent even though the name would never be written like that in welsh and just be written "Arturia/Arthuria" or "Artoria"
I think that leaves lots of room for controversy.
It's a matter of transliteration, not pronunciation. Use Artoria/Arturia instead of being an obtuse monkey that blames Nasu for his own incompetence.
There was an instance at an anime con panel where you can plainly hear artoria’s va say “artoria” and the translator says “Altria”. So while there is a “l” and “r” mixup in Japanese, the second syllable makes the distinction pretty clear imo
