- Ahhh it's time for the annual PHAD CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!
For 2022 we have a BROKEN Exotic Italian Sports Sedan: a 2016 MASERATI GHIBLI Twin Turbo!!
Looks like this one is running on 3 out of 6 cylinders at only 60k miles...not good!
Can we diagnose the problem with NO SERVICE INFORMATION?
Let's give it a shot :)

It never ceases to amaze me how timing chain components are some of the most important parts in an engine yet are made the cheapest.
They didn't used to be. With a few exceptions, the old cam drives would last the life of the vehicle. I've only had to repair the ones with nylon or fiber gear drive systems.
Can't wait for Part 16.
Great job Ivan.
Part 6 is where the customer buys a German car instead of Italian. 9 is where they buy an american one and part 10 is wherr they buy a Japanese one :D
@@rkan2 GREAT COMMENTS, LMAO.
@@rkan2 The inevitable evolution of automotive knowledge. lol.. Just get a Japanese car and forget how to work on them, because you won't need to anymore.
Japanese.. yes dont need to work on the engine...however....they won't last more than 10 years... especially if you live in the rusty city.. German are the best overall
@@rkan2 Then parts 11-16 must be short!
Thanks to Ivan for pumping these videos out in the rate that he does! Great entertainment value for sure
He's almost keeping up with Eric O/sma now! Lol
Ivan does what I like and have done "some" in the past.......DIAGNOSTICS!
When you are trusted with a Maserati, you know you have achieved your ASE certified master technician goal in life! great job Ivan!
You always say I'm not doing this job and then you do the job. I'm guessing since this is part one, you're doing the job, Merry Christmas 🎄
Sometimes I think he just takes on jobs for the challenge. He is amazing.
@@jws3925 challenge accepted!? LoL 😂😆
I don't know why he would do it with no parts or service info.
(Part-2 It's Fixed!!)
Charge the owner for the subscription to the Maserati service data.
Have to say I watch a lot of YT auto tech channels and your diagnostic skills are at another level. Others run through what they have found which is fair enough but you show us the process as it happens.
First. Amazing what you can do without Alldata, just knowledge, experience and the right tools.
Ivan cannot help but find the problem, confirm it, and regardless of how horrible the job may be it’s in his DNA to fix it. He’s like a lion chasing a gazelle, even if he doesn’t want to he’s gotta do it. He’s the king of the diagnostic jungle folks!
"My Maserati is barely alive, it lost it's compression and wont hardly drive". I'm almost Joe Walsh, but not quite. lol
you can tell what song popped in my head watching this.
I can hear the owner now: "Come on, Ivan, I know you can fix it - maybe even without any parts!". I'm with you, though - yikes! It could blow up the next time that Start button is pressed. Scary! Great video - and probably as close as I'll ever come to opening the hood on one of these!
Something tells me that if you popped it open, you would find a Chrysler (or something else familiar) part that is normally $200, but if you ask for the one for the Maserati they charge you $2000. I see a lot of these cars around (and the SUV...Levante?), they seem to be almost as popular as Teslas with the "I have a lot of money, I need to find a way to burn it" crowd.
You should start recording videos! Sounds like you've got the things for content!
We have customers with Alfa Romeo "quality" products and all the parts have Mopar on them , sometimes we source thru our Chrysler dealership not only to save money but the availability is better
The Diesels are the same as a Chrysler, but this petrol V6 is a Maserati engine, funnily enough I think the parts are made in the states but it's designed and assembled by Ferrari. However, a genuine timing chain tensioner is $275 on ebay, hardly end of the world. Ivan just needs some repair information (which shouldn't be that hard to come by) and he should be good as gold to repair. At the end of the day it's still a fairly conventional V6 turbo, there are no crazy parts from mars to be found under there.
27:20 Quoth the Ivan: "Cool bonus footage." Yes, yes it was!
Plus BONUS Bonus footage which I think was even cooler!
Absolutely fantastic diagnostic video! Anyone who thinks they can use a scope, whether on cars or anywhere else, should watch and learn!
Thanks for the wonderful pre-Christmas gift, Ivan.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year's!
Ghibli II firing order:
No 1 cylinder is the front cylinder, right hand bank as viewed from sitting in the car. No 2 and 3 are the middle and rear cylinders on the same side. No 4 is the rear, No 5 the middle and No 6 the front most cylinder on the left hand bank.
The firing order is 1-6-2-5-3-4.
Words that will never come from my lips "my first ever Maserati" Ivan fears no car!
Wow! A very expensive Maserati! And a very expensive repair with no parts available! Really impressive diagnostic without manufacturer info, using only your knowledge and sheer brain power!
If there's a Part 2, this is going to be good 🙂 If not posted this week, Merry Christmas Ivan!
Plenty of parts available. Main dealer OEM parts just like he always talks about, just no dorman. Heck he's closer to a Maserati dealer than I am to a Toyota
Used a scope and pressure transducers too.
These vehicles are so bad they go for around 30k used and you can usually haggle even lower.
Haha, Similarly, I live across the street from a Ferrari dealership, the closest Honda dealership is a half hour away xD
@@FloodExterminator The odds of that 🙂
You could throw an email to "DiagnoseDan" channel because he messes with these euro cars all the time. He might be able to tell you where to get the service info and also parts. Could be worth a try. He does quality videos at your level, with scopes and scantools, etc.. (I'm sure you know about him). Couldn't hurt to just make a quick contact and see what happens.
Yessiree, Dan has it going too. He is very good in creating the base foundation for direction of repairs. Rarely goes after things at random...always follow a path of logic !
You guys don’t remember Diagnose Dan made a video kind of imitating Ivan. Not in a bad way, but more so recognizing Ivan. This was maybe a couple years ago.
Ivan: someone else will get this job.
Future Ivan: hold my beer.
😂
Maybe, “hold my vodka”?🤔
Ivan, your knowledge, skill, work and attunement are a joy to behold in action!
Great job as always Ivan. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. Happy, Healthy and Safe Holiday Season to you and your family.
That was an awesome study and hope to see YOU do the work Ivan, you know you want to, lol! Merry Christmas to both of you!!!
Ivan, one caution: some car manufacturers specifically warn not to rotate the engine backwards, as the tensioner components are engineered to work in only one direction. Hydraulic tensioners also do not work well with zero oil pressure. It has to be repaired anyway, but a warning for others.
Yes!!!
He's not really "rotating" it.. Only dialing it back a few degrees to watch the chain slop. Most of the components are not even moving, (not much anyway).
+1
I love how you figured this out without even taking the timing cover off very good diagnosis hopefully you get to repair it It doesn't look like it's that hard it's just that you're going to need the new tensioner
Stick a Trident in it, it's done! :-)
Nice job Ivan! Merry Christmas!
LOL. Good one. 👍
Noice
Ivan, i love your channel man. I have learned so much from watching you. I wish you and family a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year.
Looking forward to seeing part 2 on this money pit. It is amazing that it didn't blow up in your shop. Merry Christmas to you as well!
Or that it did not explode on the drive there!
The Car Wizard just told us these engines are very reliable.
🤣🤣🤣 Have him watch this video series lol
They are..research deeper..it's not a fucking Chrysler..
Fascinating diagnostic process mate! You got a Maserati for Christmas! - Well, during Christmas anyway. I doubt this car is going anywhere till at least then!
Nice,
First I have ever seen of a pressure and vacuum transducer. Something new to learn about. Thanks for the lesson. Lets see what I will learn in part two.
Wow. My head is gonna explode with so much info. Hope he does the work.
You got the left handed model Maserati, Ivan. Merry Christmas. I hope you stay warm during the approaching air mass from the old country.
Way to diagnose this engine, Ivan! You were severely hamstrung by a complete lack of technical data but you really used your generic knowledge and your diagnostic tools like a master. Bravo!
You're an amazing car diagnostics engineer (no clue if that title exists but you ARE one). If you can't fix it nobody can. If it breaks while you try fixing it, then that was it's fate. You can't cheat death (all the Final Destination movies as reference).
Outstanding episode Ivan. You are a Fantastic automotive engineer. Happy new year. Joe.
Awesome. You have saved the owner from a catastrophic engine failure and informed them of what needs to be done. Can't ask for a better diag than that.
Very nice to see diag work without any of the service info that can be hard/expensive to get hold off for us backyard amateurs. Shows how far you can get with "just" good base knowledge of cars in general and some good equipment.
Wow! Amazing mechanical diagnosis from the master. Unbelievable to see the slop in chain. Happy holidays ☃️
Turned it backwards too with weak tensioner lol
Good luck with this repair ivan.waiting anxiously for final repair videos 📹 👏. Cheers
That bonus bonus footage was awesome - yikes is right - thx for the share.
Ivan, I don't know if you look for the toughest jobs or they just come to you. Suspect they come to you. Pulled out all the tools on this one. Just fascinating. Going to peruse those waveforms now. Wishing you a Merry Christmas. Looking forward to Part 2. Thanks for Sharing! 🙂
Very cool......I like the "thought process" in order to achieve the diagnosis of the faulty part. Like !!!!!!
IVAN, AWESOME finding/great approach and thought process bravo brother and thanks for sharing.
I guess we will be seeing you slip this down then in the next 4 parts to this video lol.
I Hope everyone has a great Xmas and thanks for all the time you put into making these videos
Looking forward to you taking this apart!
Excellent diagnostic work, especially given the lack of manufacturer information. Also appreciated the brief tutorial on Cam Phasor operation.
I have to say I always wanted a Maserati. I think they are beautiful cars. That car needs to be towed, or you need the service data to repair it. Hope you get the data you can fix that!!
Ivan, you are a genius. Must be a very challenging job. Not for the faint hearted
Great video. I love the bonus bonus footage.
Hi, go on Ivan you can do it! We have full confidence in you. Many thanks from UK.
Wow, unobtainable parts and no service data??? Ivan, you went in and diagnosed this thing with just your knowledge and tools with what you have, borescoped it and boom, you got your solid evidence of what just happened! That's genius in my opinion! Fantastic job and video!! Many thumbs up!!
Great job diagnosing the engine
I V A N, you have gotten me in trouble. I have watched around ~50 probably more of you working. I ain't done nothing for two days. By the way , great channel !
Ivan Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
Merry Christmas to you and Amanda. Ivan, you are one very clever man.
Bonus footage was fantastic!
Can't wait till when you do the repairs!🤔😃 Have a great relaxing holiday PHAD family.
I love this Bonus and Bonus bonus editing :)!
Merry Christmas to you and your family
How can you leave us hanging Ivan ? You can easily do this repair better than anyone.
Exotic engines, exotic problems! Great diag, Ivan! 👍
Ohhh, I was thinking that there might be a Maserati timing chain video coming! Sweet diag so far Ivan!
A perfect example of eurotrash. Great work as always. I've learned so much from your channel over the years
Great video Ivan .Merry Christmas to you and your family..
Merry Christmas Ivan!
You must have had an interesting journey growing up with professor's as parents?
It sure seems to show in your critical thinking skills and scientific method approach to problem solving.
I often have to take a step back when doing diagnosis to manage my thinking along those lines.
Cant Believe you revved it up during diag !!
Merry Christmas Ivan to you & your beautiful wife!
Hey Ivan, I just want to say to you that I really enjoy your content. I acutely appreciate how taking the time to do the videos slows you down and you are doing it for good things. Love your content and thank you. Please reflect on being a German car hater though as they are highly complex because they are pushing the technical boundaries, which is great and shows how good you are and makes your videos all the more interesting. Kudos to you and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you for the kind words! Who is a "German car hater"? I personally don't hate any car... Just prefer to drive some over others like anyone else 😉
What a great video! Cannot wait for more. Thanks Ivan
Ivan is doing the job, we know it. Great Bonus and Bonus Bonus footage.
Yowzah!!! Is that an interference engine to boot?? THAT is one 'spensive boat anchor. Thank you for going completely through the diagnosis. And NOT waiting til part 2 for it :-) That makes me sooo happy. Of course, you are going to get the job of repairing it. Can't wait to see that one.
Super Mario Diagnostics might point you in the right direction?! Nice to see you willing to roll up your sleeves.
Hey Ivan, just a FYI. In Euro car world, "Additive" adaptation values are Idle/No or low load Fuel Trim values. "Multiplicative" adaptation values are load/off idle Fuel Trim. You still have your basic/standard LTFT fault setting criteria but since the STFT can be distinguished between idle and load, diagnosing becomes much easier & quicker if you understand your data, which you're pretty damn good at.
Keep up the great vids!!!!
Ivan one fantastic job of using your head to figure out a problem with no service information very very good job there boy you are the man great video and cameraman super super great thanks
Fascinating stuff as always, Ivan. But...... if you're not gonna touch it, how can there be a Part 2? The suspense continues.
Another amazing video.
Wow, when I grew up in PA we never had weather like that in December! 🤣🤣
"It won't be me!" .... uhh, we've heard those words before, dude.
I really love your informative videos
Late to the party, but yeah; Outstanding Ivan!
"I'm not doing the job but there might be a Part 2"
😄
Wow now you have gotten into some extra-terrestrial tech with this one Ivan but I know that you can figure this out. At 6:12 you have two Angle of Inlet- camshaft edges relative to crankshaft and one Angle of outlet- camshaft to crankshaft PIDS going crazy and yet the remaining Angle of outlet-camshaft to crankshaft PID that momentarily blip ed and then went to zero, Hmmmmmm what's that all about? Great captures of "good" and "bad" and the bonus footage at the end was gold. Skipping the chain with just a ratchet and actually seeing it pop was all you need to present to the customer as a definite diagnosis and hopefully he or she will heed your warning and not try and run this motor as it is an unknown as to interference engine or not. It is truly amazing that with just basic knowledge and a scope you can troubleshoot even the most exotic engines with confidence. You Rock Ivan once again. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.
Great video!
I LOVE IT the last maserati ghibli i worked on was a diesel ended up smoking from the air filter air leaks every where theres a lot of intake pipework and the old avoca smoker (sma) TOLDTHE TRUTH
Fun times! Rev it until it pops...... Maybe not.
Eurotrash never fails to deliver interesting videos.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤️
Merry xmas ivan great diag 😊
I want to think that if the smell of RAW gas is coming from the tail pipe. that must be causing havoc with the CATs.... I the customer drove it there... that's a huge problem I think because I've burned out 2 CAT's on my Lexus driving less than 10 miles with 4 cylinders not firing. Anyway, that concerns me.
Your videos just keep getting better! I'm impressed!
Mad respect!
What is your ultimate goal for your shop? Expand? Employees? Inquiring minds want to know!
Oh, *MERRY CHRISTMAS!*
i highly doubt it
Not likely any of those. They all increase overhead/ liability. He will just keep on keepin' on.
THANK YOU for an interesting video, Ivan! I would help the owner find a flatbed company to come and retrieve the car. I think if someone wants an expensive Euro Exotic, he should have enough money to keep a mechanic on retainer, available 24/7. Since there's a part 1, I suspect you'll have info on the repair. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
C'mon! Where's the bonus bonus bonus footage! Dang! Awesome,Thanks!
Oh Ivan, you are so going to dive into this monster LOL ;)
There is a Maserati techinfo website for service information. Come on! You know you want to do it:) it’s what I told myself when I got a Maserati Bi-Turbo Spider towed to me when I worked at Alfa Romeo. It’s just nuts and bolts. It will be your labor of ❤️. All kidding aside seriously awesome diagnosis without having to crack covers. You are definitely in the top 1 percentile of auto technicians. A hat tip to you.
I did advise 1 week on the health farm and after this Maserati is sorted it will have doubled. I've had loose chains but this is over the moon 🌜🌒. Time for OEM data before biting the bullet. The chances of seeing the piston shoot through the cover are rising, exponentially. Can't wait for part 2.
Wish you and your family a merry Christmas. That was one great informational study (genius at work) Bill LI NY
Yep, gotta love that dreaded 'click'...whoops, I think something just happened...can't break it any more if it's already broken🤣
I heard a very similar noise from inside a mighty 3.6 Alloytec on a customer's car recently.
I had pulled cam/crank co-relation codes 6-12months prior, but he just kept driving it with the CEL on until it started knocking, then he called me back to take a look..I knew what I'd find.
Pulled the R/H bank valve cover off, and I could see a nice loose chain between I+E cam gears.
Figured I'd keep him happy and try to do a simple leak down test on the cyls for that bank to confirm piston to valve contact/bent valve/s causing the knock, sure enough as soon as I tried to turn the crank (in the correct direction) to bring any cylinder onto a compression stroke I heard that distinctive 'click' and the crank wouldn't turn any further...sorry sir, she gone done did it🤣🤣
I can't wait to see part 2 when you tear into this engine. Wait....that's not gonna happen. What will part 2 be about?
Brilliant.
Ivan: oh no!
I can relate to that
And the fun begins. Someone else will do the repairs. Really Clark? LOL. 👍👍
