I dont own a truck, have any intention in ever welding or building custom parts for a truck etc, but Waldo always got me wanting to learn how to weld just to do stuff like this, i dont know why. Love these videos
@@southernboy9786 with a damn Hyundai Elantra I got stuck with after blowing up my 04 ram 1500. 😔. I’m ab to get myself a 5.9 or 7.3 for my birthday tho
Waldo, one thing I think this bed is missing is a set of D-Rings on the back bumper, tied into the frame rail where you can pull hard on them if you ever get the truck stuck, or you are getting something else un-stuck. For your fender lip, you are on the right track with the flat bar, to dress it up, step it in from the face of the box tube, and wrap a piece of round stock around that edge, and then weld in the gap, it will give you a nice rounded corner with a nice finish.
I have been checking multiple times a day, ofc I haven’t checked all day today and you post 😂. I’m 15 and just bought my first truck, I live in Michigan so rust is a big issue. The bed is pretty shot so I may be doing a flatbed, thanks for the inspiration.
what a badass truck ! and actually I worked at a hot dip galvanization place 25 years ago in Germany .... when we got the material we let it sit outside in the rain for a few days to get some surface rust and wash the dirt off, that way the zinc would stick better .... so no big deal there ...
I used round bar as a fender lip, like 3/8”, it gave me a good curve to lay my weld into, and it’s smooth enough not to catch your pants on walking past it
This truck and Brandon have me wanting to build my own bed for my F350 now! Fantastic video as always, Waldo. It's always a pleasure seeing a video of yours pop into my feed!
I would install back up light on the angel of the bumper to light up further sides of the truck while backing up and help if trailer is attached. Yes ad small metal wheel skirt as you suggested around wheel well. I would paint the bed white to match the cab and then ad your own secondary color as a pin strip or accent color of your preference
if you are going to be awhile on finishing the fender I would plug the end of the square tube to keep mud and slush out of it. As a 5.9 owner/driver I think you are correct in possibly losing a prime. I've never had to crank that long. I think a round bar lip would look nice for the fender treatment.
Good looking outcome of that bumper. If you are going to use that trailer hitch as a hitch, I think you will find it needs to be brought out from its current location. Looking forward to the completion of the plow.
Hey Waldo. My son Davey and I really like to watch your videos. You are sooo smart and creative. Davey and I sometimes wish we were smarter instead of being handsome. Nay just kidding. keep em coming. We have learned so much from you.
Great to see you back, Waldo! I was just thinking yesterday “where’s Waldo?” Haha. Looking forward to the snowplow video. I like the 1” strip over the wheel arch idea. 👍
1”-2” strap will look good, I used a 12”x48” 14g sheets on my single rear wheel truck, and turned the rear end into a dually, all in all it looks really good.
I really have enjoyed the Billy Bob build. Can't wait to see it full done. On the wheel well: If you knew someone with a pipe bender that could bend you a pipe with the same radius dimensions of the wheel well, you could then use a cutoff wheel to cut the fender flare from the pipe. From the same pipe you would get both a left and right fender flare and it would have the nice eye appealing arch we all like. With your welding skills you could either build a jig to hold the cut of wheel or take it to a friend and have a nice clean plasma torch cut. I think these fenders would "Rock" vrs a strip of flat bar stock. Lee
I think a nice fender flare detail is some rod welded to the 1/8 flat bar. This leaves a bit of a softer edge rather than the sharp edge of flat stock to get sliced on.
Consider using elongated ABS sheets for the fender arches; pretty common in off-road applications. Easy to manipulate and shape with a heatgun, cheap to replace.
Some nice tips and work I'm just starting my metal work journey and using it in my Rc hobby I've just got some bits and taps and diamond edge steel dremil cutting discs and want to start welding work
As a suggestion. Look into a full inner fender to protect the under side of trk. I rebuilt about 90% of my flatbed on my f350 and my welds dont look near that good but i made them strong. You have been doing some very interesting projects. I wish i had more time but 4 days a month at home its hard to relax and get things done
I was thinking round bar or maybe even 1/2 tube if you can bend it smoothly. But on the inside of the fender well, then cap the square tube at a 45 where it terminates at the fender opening. The bumper looks nice and gives the tail a simple, finished look.
Hey waldo check with a local fab shop and see if they can roll your 1 inch square tube to match the counter of your wheel opening thats how I did mine looks good I have a roller to do that that y I tried it good looking bed too
Hey waldo ! I’m a welder and if you want stronger weld i recommend you to push the weld instead of pulling it. You’re gonna have a way better penetration and you will end up with a much stronger weld. Anyway i really love your video keep up the good work !
I’ve been a welder for 20 years and I have to disagree. You ALWAYS have better penetration dragging (pulling) than pushing. m.czcams.com/video/PDoX0bBggLo/video.html Both have their place in welding. Just like up hill or down hill in the 3G position.
@@Price1861 thanks steve you were right. My teacher used to say to me that in mig welding you always push but after a bit of research pulling give you a better penetration but on the other hand pushing give you a better finish ! Is there a particular domain were you need to pull like in shipyard or in structural work or it’s alway’s up to the welder ?
@@uranium51 Depends. Unless specified by blueprints or weld inspector. It is left to the welder. It also determined what kind of project you are working on (material thickness, bevel or no bevel, pre heat or post heat, etc.). For example, when fabricating hand railing where the weld will be left exposed and not finished with a flap disk. I will typically bevel the edges and push the weld. Makes a nice aesthetic looking weld on a handrailing in my opinion. When working with an open root, i tend to pull. Ecspecially with pipe i will usually pull, unless i have to push.
For the fender flare lip.... go to tractor supply, buy a metal trailer fender, mark a line 2in or so back from the lip and cut it off with that Milwaukee metal saw. Then you'll have a nice metal fender flare you can weld on. I've done this on several flat beds, it works and looks great.
If your radius is 18" or less you could buy a trailer fender with a rolled edge and cut it to the width you want. With that radius or smaller you can buy them. I made my own because I needed 39" diameter. It is a real nice look.
That bumper came out amazing!! I love it. I like the idea of a metal flare over rear tire. The only other thing I thought of is a piece of rubber fender flare. Aspen is a good girl. Love seeing you beautiful pup on your vids. Thanks for sharing Waldo!!
Just a little hint on welding that little bubble you see right behind your arc in the puddle, we call that bubble the "weld ghost" you don't ever want to run off and leave him but you also don't ever want to let him catch you.
The oil pipeline welders rigs have like a little round lip they put in there then roll it. I forget his name he got a CZcams channel he's made a few beds with that style and the rain just rolls off it's a nice detail
I personally like the look with the lights in the headache rack wired to the running lights also. I run the magnum brand headache racks on my trucks and love the look of the extra lights
Really looking good now ! I like the shape of the bumper looks better than factory , yep I would continue with arch trim but keep it close so it sort of looks like rolled edge , thanks for the update Waldo excellent as usual !!

Thank you for the ideas! Do D-rings make lots of noise while driving? That would be my only source of hesitation
@@WaldosWorld yes they do make noise.
Sometimes I will tarp strap them tight.
Maybe a heavy duty eye bolt of sorts that you can put a clevis on and remove when not in use?
@@WaldosWorld You can get isolators that quiet them down. Or use some large hose to make them. Shackle mount tabs may be a better idea.
Maybe if you Insert a magnet in the bumper so the d-ring stays in place...or something.
The live weld shots are awesome. Great to see and super informative for anyone trying to learn
Thank you!

Finally,;-) if you hotdip galvanize (great idea) make sure you drill a hole in every piece of tubing so the galvanize goes inside the tube as well.

Go to trailer store and buy a fender for a single axle trailer and cut the edges off to use for your fenders that way you have a nice rolled edge.
Gotta admit wasn’t about the tow mirrors at first but the modern style skirted bed has definitely pulled the whole truck together
