- Classic Game Room HD reviews the ASCIIWARE PLAYSTATION FIGHTING STICK for the PS1, the Ascii Stick PS for Playstation 1. This arcade style stick was made for PS1 fighting games like Tekken 2 and Street Fighter II but works with the PS2 and a variety of awesome fighters. Includes auto fire, turbo and slow motion. Each of the 8 buttons (standard Playstation buttons and L1, R1, L2, R2) can be set with their own individual turbo or auto. Adjust the rate of turbo. Adjust the rate of awesome. This is a review of the Ascii Ware PSX PSone PS1 arcade fighting stick w/ joystick joy stick. Used these are a bargain! $8 bill gets back some change. Who has an $8 bill? CGR is on it.

I literally found one of these in a dumpster outside a pawnshop one morning while at work 8 years ago and it works still to this day.

and yes, that should work with a ps3 as long as you have a ps2-to-usb adapter
I bought one a week ago. :) It is really Asskickware! I'm using an usb ps1 converter for PS3. Tekken 6 is outstanding with it! :)
I stumbled upon the site that distributes these fighting sticks. They look real nice. Made from authentic Play Station console parts. Looks like this thing is nice for the price. I am going to get one for sure now. Great review Mark!
I just got one of these bad boys about a month ago for pretty cheap, well under market these days. Seems to be in good order, but I haven't tested it yet. There's plenty of games in my collection that would be the perfect fit, but this video made me realize I'm missing quite a few bangers.
I found this thing at a thrift store for 6 bucks. It's ok. But later on I found a Namco Arcade stick for PS1 at the same store for 8 bucks and THAT stick really ROCKS! Nice review!
There's also a Namco stick for the PS1 that I've heard it pretty good as well.
I found a used one in December of 2023 and it still works great with my original PS1

Just picked one of these up for $5. W00T! It's definitely not Hori, but the joystick itself is excellent and that's the most important part to me.
such a good review! and I see it 13 years later! the ASS-KICKING-WARE name really sounds way more appropriate for this! I need to get me one of these!
I own both of the Asciiware arcade joysticks and the Namco one and they are all amazing with fighting and platform games, but the dual shock d-pad is way more precise and responsive/faster for Tekken 3 and 5 especially for the up/down-neutral move to go in perspective around the opponents. I also got the Blaze Pro Shock lite rumble joystick (Ps1 only, too bad) on the purpose for Tekken 3. It's quite small, you can handle as a joypad but it has steel stick and arcade buttons so you get all the coinop feeling+the rumble feature (quite strong either holding it or keeping on the desk).
at 2:31 & 4:59 the side ridges actually do serve a purpose, you can place your fingers/hand against it for traction for those who prefer thumb play on the buttons. very cool video. cool and thx for the reviews
This stuff is awesome, also you can hook it to a ps3 through one of those usb adaptors for the pc that allow you to play with playstation controllers on your pc, a nice plus if you ask me.
The background music used in the video reminds me of old school dungeon crawling games on PC, not one in specific, but it has that dark dungeon crawling adventure feeling. Nice review as always.

Just bought this today for 6 bucks at a discount store behind my apartment xD it works great with ps1 games, as well as ps2 fighting games :D
im using this to play the snk arcade collection for the ps2
It feels different than an arcade stick. There is less throw on the lever and the buttons are a bit gummy feeling. It is a great little stick, just feels very different than something you'd find with Sanwa parts.
+PixelOutlaw I had one of these and I threw it in a bonfire. This felt really nasty and made me hate sticks till I used HAPP on arcades which has a long throw. This has a nasty throw.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an actual PSX kiosk (the 2-player Pepsi one), I got creative and velcroed 2 of these pads on the lid. With a library as good as the PS1's I'll never need to hit the arcade again!
Instead of buying a fuckin expensive Neo Geo.
Get these and a PlayStation.

@@rsoub4086 Yes it did worked for PS2, but sadly the stick act as a Dpad not analoge. No use on games that requires a DS2 controller, this arcade stick registers as the OG PS controller, no analog

@@rsoub4086 Id be better off with a PC stick with D-input for compatibility via USB. I have not tested an OG controller via PS to USB converter. But DS2 works on PS3 but with PS4 I highly doubt it. Even if it works, you might be missing essential controls designed for ps4 gaming. This arcade stick is not worth it beyond PSOne games.
Use a drop level drill bit if you do not like the squaregate on the joystick. With a drop level drill bit, you can change it to a circlegate. Feels much better...

I actually have this. I got it at a garage sale about 5 years ago for a dollar.
I have an ascii 6 button style SEGA Genesis controller. That thing is badass and awesome. They made some great controllers.
lovely clicking sound on the joystick, like the hori or madcats ones for ps3 or xbox
I own of of this ascii figting stick V jr shipped from US and im using it on my ps2 for the games tekken 5 & marvel vs capcom 2 and it works very fine same like the hori tekken 5 arcade stick. it works well for fighting games for both ps1 & ps2 thumbs up!!!
Asciiware did great arcade sticks not just for the PS1 but for the SNES and Genesis!
Gonna buy this plus and adapter to use this for my Dreamcast and all of it's fighting games! I wanted to find one with an 8-way joystick for under $50. I have found it!
If memory serves Asciiware also made the Super Advantage stick for the SNES.

Vectrex technically had one that was pretty much the norm of arcade joysticks of the time.
I just found one of these for £4 at a car boot sale. I intend to use it mostly for shoot em' up games. Wish I'd found it before I made my last Tekken 3 video. Buttons feel a lot better for fighting games.

The button layout and company are almost the same as the SNES Super Advantage, only the PS1 Pad has R2 and L2 but the turbo is the same!
Handelds could really do with an arcade joystick, even if it is smaller. Granted I have never seen one. lol

i have 5 sticks inc high end hori stuff. i must admit im used to the high quality of recent sticks but as an avid fan of fighting games i would rather use my hrap on ps2. it was so much better quality and its backwards compatible so id go for that personally. the tekken 2 challenge sounds fun though :) id love that saturn stick though just for my collection.
i bought this stick from a local flee market and bout a pc and ps3 adapter its a good buy i purchased mine for 7 bucks =)

Works on the computer easily with an adapter. Saves money for casually playing arcade titles.
I remember having a PlayStation joystick. I remember fucking with the buttons, not knowing what it was in the first place.
@Rathian1592 Yeah, works with anything you can plug a PS1/2 controller into.
The Japanese version of that Saturn stick does have microswitches on the joystick.

The PS1 Arcadestick looks like an Stick for Dreamcast.. it would fit to the controllers. xD
Finaly got my dad to buy me one of thees (along with HDMI cables for my PS3 and componet cables for my wii cheap).
Cant wait to kick ass on SSF4, MVC2 with this thing on my PS3 using my PS2/GC/XBOX to usb converter.
I should try Megaman 10, Fat Princess and try Brutal Legend with it.
Man this will be fun. Expecialy using it on my laptop with some other games.
Mine says "ASCII SPECIALIZED JOYSTICK" on the bottom label. My issues are: soldered instead of disconnect terminals, no hole for holding the shaft while removing the ball top (with a shaft sleeve that prevents holding it externally), and standard "rubber dome" buttons (not micro switches). Oh! My joystick switches also jam. I don't see any lubrication. Switch brand is "OMRAM," which is the same as the NEO•GEO X Gold arcade stick.
I think TOBAL No. 1 came with an order for this controller in Europe, at least in Spain.
ascii totally ripped the psx design in every way!
The only guy I know that sells these things in Germany lives a 10-minutes drive from my home, and not even ebay Germany has them! Shoot, he can charge whatever he wants T_T
Big problem with this. If you try to use it on a Dreamcast, the converter maps L and R to L1 and R1, which is hella awkward for playing the SFIII games.
Other than that, it's near flawless :D
I actually have this thing in its original box in my closet. Its also in perfect condition.
Looks like the old NES Advantage controller from the 80's.. but with way more buttons obviously. I doubt this thing has rumble though. Most 3rd party controllers don't have any rumble especially on todays controllers..

when i had this i only used it for soul blade i think.

i got this free from the car booty and loved it. i then bought a ps1 to ps3 adapter for £2 so i have now got a ps3 arcade stick for essentialy £2. i my friend think this was a bargain.
for some reason i prefer using this than a steering wheel for racing games

@flikkerzout Depends on the gamepad, depends on the connector. Usually you won't need to go through the trouble of searching for drivers. If in any case you do, keep the box and/or write down the model number for future reference. ^_^
