Fun story: James Baxter's daughter is a fan of Steven Universe. For her birthday, he asked Rebecca Sugar (SU's creator) if she could visit. She did (and gave the birthday girl a cool picture of Rose and Steven hugging), and in return, asked if he would personally do a scene of animation for the series finale. We can all agree that he held up his end of the deal!
'Held up'? This legend blew it out of the metaphorical water!
Its cool i cant find the season 5 and the whole movie and furtue anywhere bc i dont have cable or anything can anyone help?

Anyone else have no idea this dude was an animator and just thought the adventure time horse was gonna guest star in all these shows
lmaooooo frrr
He was also an ex animator for Disney and Dreamworks.
Who'd know that the adventure time horse was also the one that revolutionized animation
I also thought this was about the funny horse, I had no idea there was a backstory lol
as a kid I was so confused why the horse kept saying "JjjAaameess BAxtèeeěr"
I never really understood any of the plots adventure time had back then
2:20
i only saw Connie walk back and i already knew the animation style changed
Same
The animation is based on the storyboard tho
Also the regular studio for Steven Universe (SunMin Image Pictures) did the line-art and ink, James Baxter just did the keyframing, so..
Kuuruuseii which still means that the animation style changed.
Same :0

It’s amazing how fluid his animation style is too 😭
His YT: czcams.com/channels/t2iDOfRW1WWu5SxgJJpP1g.html
He only has to animate like 3 seconds so
yah yeet yeah but I more meant he has a lot less to work on
Doesn’t matter how fluid he still has less work to do, give him a 20 min episode and see if it’s the same
glossyplane542 ...The man has literally worked on feature films. Also, animation is literally always a group project, often featuring different artists animating different sections. So his fluidity of animation is still an incredible achievement within recognized animation standards, and unless it was a fully independent project, you’re not going to see him or anyone else fully animate a 20 minute short (unless it’s say, a film student work. Even then there’s likely to be multiple credits. Even independent projects still have multiple staff members, from storyboarding to cleanup to full animation of different sections). Also, a person’s style doesn’t just magically change because the project is longer, it just requires more hours of work.
@@glossyplane542 Dude, he has literally helped make movies. The man is a professional.
I wonder if James Baxter voices James Baxter the horse
He does
Probably
He absolutely does.
Of course he did
@@toddelmsworth640 He has kinda lovely voice isn`t it?
The guy animated for disney, if your wondering why its so fluid.
Are these scenes animated by him or story boarded?
@@ZealStarMedia *animated.*
Theyre storyboarded and then he rough drafts and animates everything else by hand.
I see..
It’s not fluid because he animated for Disney. He animated for Disney because his animation is fluid.
I love how James Baxter is represented in Adventure Time as an extremely smoothly animated horse that rolls around on a beach ball who can only say his name.
2:20 This guy makes 2D look like 3D, that’s insane! I love it!
this is too perfect to be 2D man

2:19 is probably one the most beautiful animations I’ve seen from him my jaw dropped I watched it too many times I couldn’t count
And the fact that white gem or grey not too sure wasn’t a 3D model blew my mind

That and the sweeping ballroom shot in Beauty and the Beast. That was him!

Agreed
i always thought i was so cool for being the only 2nd-3rd grader watching regular show in my class man-

0:39 his mouth right before he finishes tumbling conveys so much emotion. i felt genuine concern over a minimalistically drawn horse.
How does James Baxter do it, I'll never know
Lol, I love how Steven Universe and Regular Show use James Baxter's amazing skills for important and heartfelt scenes. While Adventure Time has him draw a horse.
Is it sad that I learned about James Baxter from Adventure Time?
No, me too
hey, i didn't even know about his existence until i watched this video
Not at all! As a kid i wasnt exactly conscious of his work on old disney movies, so it wasnt until I was older and watched the AT episode that I learned about him and began to pick up and appreciate his work in older/newer stuff.
Had no idea but i really love how he did these scenes for CN shows.
Same
There is actually an Episode about the origins of James Baxter in Adventure Time and how his name in the series comes from the mispronunciation of two signs he finds in a cave: "Games" and "Bookstore", which makes the name James Bakstor!
2:30 it doesn't take another animator to appreciate how hard it is to draw 3d rotation of white diamonds face. pay attention to the fingernails, the eyes, the gem on her forehead, the shapes never lose their form. I lose my mind over this scene often
HE DEFLATED HIS BEACH BALL AND FOLDED IT INTO A HAT AND PUT ON THE HAT AND TROTTED INTO THE SUNSET THIS IS AMAZING I CANT
I wouldnt be surprised if James also animated the Pops sacrifice-hug scene in the final episode Regular Show.
Everytime the animation quality weirdly jumps up by 16x, I'll know it's this dude.
So basically this man drew out my entire child hood😭
i dont know if anyone knows this but
white diamond isnt 3d
thats hand drawn
Which IS SO COOOL RHAWRHWAR
That shit was so surreal and good that it made me half-assume they were rotoscoping
Jame Baxter is just a god among men
Best part
On paper
Ur joking right? JAMES BAXTOR HOW DID YOU COME TO BE
czcams.com/video/KESNewqMyEs/video.html
wOw
James baxter... He could literally animate something boring paint drying on a wall and it would be the most fluid, most amazing, most beautiful spectacle that any of us have ever seen.
Anything this guy gets his hands on turns into a thing of beauty.
This man has been around since our childhoods (Disney, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network). It's amazing how much of a part of it he's been and we might not have even known it.
They’re so smooth!! Is breath taking! That Steven Universe one was so clean I can’t get over it!!!
That moment in SU will be burned into my memory for all time. Such a beautiful scene
0:30 I just love tht little whistling toon
I AM DYING TO FIND THE NAME OF THE SONG!!! I can't find any information on it anywhere!
I love how his style always meshes into the show he’s working on
This guy. Ugh his animations are the smoothest of the smoothest. Im glad the animation industry understand this dud has talent over talent
My fav part its when he says
*James BaxtEeR*
J-aa-aa-a-ahmes Baxte-e-er!

james baxter throwing it back, use this information however you will
2:20 This scene just gives me pure joy.
0:39 welp he's dead
I love how crisp the animation is in the Steven universe scene it gives me chills
0:23 is incredible how smooth it looks like when he starts running
2:20 this is my favorite scene of all time. Out of every movie and tv show, this is by far my favorite scene!
Baxter's animation is so fluid, but he also has such a unique grasp on angles. The SU finale is the most obvious example, but there are some in all of his works.
Can we get an entire show just of James Baxter work like omg it's so beautiful
2:28
The first time I saw this i cried. This ep was a rollercoaster.
This guy manages to push 24 frames to it’s limit. Animation looks so smooth like it’s 30+ frames per second
The horse tripping and falling to the ground is honestly my favorite thing
Is nobody going to talk about when James Baxter the horse made the ball into a paper hat?! That was so cute and smooth!
He can draw really well for someone who only has hooves
It's ridiculous how smoothly he animates. It's more butter than butter!
0:47 This moment gets to live rent-free in my head.
I can't believe this is the guy who did the "sanctuary" scene from Hunchback!!
Wait, HE DID?
@@callieohpeee9068 yep en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Baxter_(animator)
His animation is litterally incredible, in that Steven universe scene you can instantly see how much better it is, when Connie hands Steven over to.. uh, Steven, you can see how much expressions been put into her cautious / amazed steps backwards, his movement captures so many emotions and I love it!
0:41 I love this part the most! It’s soo smooth!
0:37 I shouldn't be laughing this hard.
Same.
His animation probably is like that 'cause he animates in a tradicional way , instead of the usual flash animation, that is faster then the tradicional, but is any less fluid.
Also , he is VERY skilled, he is an awesome animator!
ALSO, STOP SAYING THAT FLASH IS LAZY, IT ISN'T. ANIMATION IS HARD, EVEN ON FLASH. THE TRADICIONAL WAY TAKES MUCH MORE TIME AND EFFORT TO ANIMATE, SO , PLEASE, STOP . Oh, and if they didn't use flash, probably a 10-minute episode of your favorite show would come out one a month (or even more), not one a week.
True, look if I remember a series called Green Eggs and Ham is traditionally animated and was produced for a little over 3 years and there are about 13 episodes
so if i agree with what you say
Actually, most shows use a combination of both methods. They use flash Animation for close how or merely talking scenes and traditional (but in digital) for anything else. This makes the animation way cheeper and faster but it keeps the quality almost the same
And?
@@mertensiam3384 Oh, I didn't knew that, thanks!
Are you suggesting he draws cels and scans them frame by frame vs keyframing digitally and infilling to a higher density than required?
0:38 top 10 anime deaths..
U tried to take my comment and make it your own
Mann, his animation is so fluid and so magical.
I would like to do animation like him someday. It is one of my inspirations 💖💝
@EDimentional InkWhale You can, but it can take anywhere from a few years, several years, or a few decades before you get to that point. Remember there are also online tutorials that go deeper into animation than I likely can.
(Step 1) First of all, you have to master art. Things such as lineart, coloring, shading, emotion, tone, atmosphere, etc.
(Step 2) Then you have to get a lighttable, a pencil, and many sheets of animation paper to animate with (or get a drawing tablet with an animation glove, and download an animation program such as Adobe Animate CC or OpenToonz. Personally I recommend the latter because it's free and allows for more advanced animation than the former. I actually use OpenToonz for animation currently.)
(Step 2.5) While you do that, you need to study up on the basics of animation (such as keyframing, expression, 3D interpretation, inbetweening, lip-syncing, etc.)
(Step 3) Once you feel comfortable with that, make more complex animations while studying up on advanced animation techniques (such as full-body animation, frame-by-frame animation, storyboards, animatics, rough animation, tie-down, cleanup, final lineart, coloring, shading, highlighting, etc.) I highly recommend using audio samples for animation at this stage (things like Oney Plays, Vinesauce, podcasts, your own voice recordings, etc. As long as it isn't copyrighted content. You can even join a reanimated collab if you're confident enough, but you must be VERY confident in your animation and social skills, and have a lot of free time on your hands, especially if you're a perfectionist like me. Reanimated collabs turned out poorly for me, but you might have more luck 🙂.)
(Important Note) One very important thing is to put your animations on social media for the public to view and judge honestly. You can even join an art/animation community. It can be a great way to earn motivation, confidence, and to know how good of an animator you really are, especially on Newgrounds, where the population is mostly animators and artists like me. Newgrounds offers the most honest criticism and the best and biggest animation/art community. In fact, the whole site is pretty much an animation community! But if people negatively review your animation/art, that is NOT an invitation to give up. It's a sign to try harder and to push yourself more, but not to the point where you negatively obsess about it. *Try to find meaning and inspiration in your work.*
(Step 4) Finally, repeat step 3 until you're as good of an animator as James Baxter, though you may need some extra talent to even get _close_ to his level. You really shouldn't set the bar that high, especially since that's as high as the bar goes! Unless what you're looking for is pixel-perfect frame-by-frame 2D animation, you need to set your bar lower to animators such as OneyNG or Jaiden Animations. If you are still reading this, thank you so much, I hope my information is useful enough for you! If you are motivated and work hard enough, you'll get good enough to where you feel comfortable. Just remember not to give up. See animation as a hobby at first, and hopefully you'll get good enough to where you can either apply for a job in animation or someone desirable recognizes you and you get hired. Animation colleges such as CalArts or Ringling are recommended, but not neccessarily a requirement. Plus college costs *a LOT of money...*
Have a good day! 😄👍
2:18 when i saw this air on tv, that was when i started crying. i love steven universe so much, and it taugh such valuable lessons, and seeing it come to life like that brought be so much happiness.
This has better and smoother animation than the entirety of one piece's 942 episodes
I got my own complaints with some of the later seasons of and such of Steven universe. But that one little scene, with zero context, that to me just radiates a message of self love and it’s so heartfelt. It’s beautiful
Man James Baxter defeated all those crew behind those shows lol. His animation quality is just so superior and natural it's uncanny for those shows.
When I saw this ep I tought how amazingly smooth and beautiful the animation looked like :'D ♡🎉 it's still amazing

I was about to say that this guy has an animation style that matches the likes of Richard Williams, but then I found out he animated for the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, so I can see how he was well-trained as an animator.
It is just... awesome 👏
It would be cool if James Baxter appeared in multiple CN show as a creature that just exists to bring happiness

I never knew James Baxter animated the steven reunion fusion. that's my favorite fluid animation scene ever. so much emotion in so little time.
my favourite part was when he said “james baxter”.
0:41 that's so cute wh
Some of the most fluid animation work came from this man and i love him for it
God when I saw the Steven Universe part in the finale I almost cried because of how downright stunning it is. I knew it was different, but the fact that it's the same animator that did my favorite Adventure Time episodes when I was little makes so much sense. So much credit and love to James, he is incredible.

It makes so much sense now why that horse keeps saying James Baxter...
The scene in the cave with the bat and camera movement almost made me feel like I was melting butter in pan about to be poured over a gourmet silk pancakes.
