Asakusa's street food is more spread out compared to places like Ameyoko and Harajuku, but it's very much worth the walking and this episode will help you get around Tokyo's cultural heart - Asakusa.

So cool this video John! Watching with my wife and she told me a funny story about people chocking with mochi, she worked in a rest home long time ago around Niigata, so they needed to be very careful giving mochi to the elderly people, one time one old guy was choking to death and nurse very strong trying to save him (arms crossed around his stomach and pushing hard), didn't work... luckily cleaner was passing by with a vacuum!!! she grabbed the vacuum and inserted in the guy's troath and sucked the remaining mochi saving his life!!!
Deadly mochi foiled by a vacuum cleaner! Niigata has some of the best rice and mochi too! Yes, the new year ozoni soup is such a danger if big chunks are in there and if the soup cools, the mochi gets just a little firmer! It's like swallowing a bath plug if you don't chew! ... better taste but just as deadly. Thank you for sharing the story!
wow
Smells like bull
This made the day 😂😂😂
Hate to break it to you but she may have been messing with you...There's a infamous scene in a very famous Japanese movie called "Tampopo" where a character in restaurant starts choking on mochi, and they save him with a vacuum. It's an amazing movie that HIGHLY recommend. Also, I very highly doubt that a vacuum has anywhere near the suction power to actually remove something stuck in someone's throat, even shop-vacs have don't have the much power.
Thanks John for the fabulous street food tour of Asakusa! Love how you put all of this together. I can really feel your passion for food!
Epic beard man. Very nice.
Watch out for the laser beams! LOL Sorry to keep you waiting before eating at times - haha! You're a very good friend to lend us the time to make this and greatly appreciative of it - it turned out well and was a lot of fun! Let's do it again, anytime!
U look like broke foreigners
A masterpiece of a beard!
My two favorite Japan channel flavors, tasting better together! Your fun videos kept me sane during lockdown. Glad you guys did this combo video. And way to rock that beard!
Only in Japan only feels right with John Daub!
Just so let you know that your passion about making videos about Japan is very much appreciated.
I agree. I cant make myself watch or continue watching the old channel with the new host and format. I particularly miss the intro and sound effects of his older videos.
"I came back without Eric (Don't tell him) to try one of the most popular variations with whipped cream."
The whisper tho.
🤣
Thanks for watching this Eating Spree in Asakusa! So QUESTION: What was your favorite street food from this episode? Let me know in the comments below and
Don't forget to subscribe to this new main ONLY in JAPAN channel! New adventure coming really soon! PS: The ONLY in JAPAN Fireworks Kickstarter is still going on - last week to support and get in on event! Live streaming it from Nagano on Nov 3rd! -John
My favorite was taiyaki and dango
I have to go with that fried chicken - spice sounded very interesting
Chicken with different layers.
That Sweet Potato Ice Cream!
Mine's taiyaki!
I don't know whether to look at that golden chicken, or Erics golden Moses beard! Love you two together.
Walking around a historical area while dining on the food? Yes.
Standing and eating..
Yum!
@@VictorLugosi nooo 😭
Eric rubbing it in how good his ice cream is … hilarious!
2:03 whoa dekai! 😂 That and the 🦸👀 stare.
Yes the comical touch is a must when your guest is 🧔🏄6️⃣
I wonder if off screen Eric gave each food his usual Nom Nom scale to you JD.
8:44 wow 😱 shocking 🍡 fact!
22:46 The cheek thermometer 🌡️ really gave the Taiyaki a truly medieval touch.
Another well crafted entertaining video. A first OIJ video with EricSurf6 is probably a landmark video 🥰👍🏽
Eric is super kind and fun to work with - my style is much slower than his - I really appreciated his patience. A true landmark for the OIJ series to have on one of the first and greatest Japan CZcamsrs going back to 2006, the year when CZcams started! Much respect for Ericsurf6 and hope to catch up with him again soon.
the best episode yet!
OMG! I actually laughed out loud when you did the laser eyes.
hehehe - Always wanted secret super powers! I noticed I was looking more at his ice cream than my own. It really was THAT GOOD! hahaha
I enjoyed watching this episode, John. You are on a different level in creating NHK-ish type of episodes. To be honest, I prefer watching these recorded videos, rather than the Livestream. A big fan here from the Philippines.
John me and my sister have always watched your videos when we were 6 and loved them ever since. We're big fans of yours and always watch your video when we want to learn more about Japan!
Keep it up and keep us informed about Japan!
Thank you Talha! Tell you sister I said hello 👋😁🎌
That was quite the street feast! 😋 Eric at 8:37 "You talk too much" LOL 🤣John, you won't be winning any eating contests against Eric! Although you don't want to eat mochi too fast as you pointed out. Well shot and paced and looked fantastic! 👍🍢🍡
I really appreciate the professional sort-of documentary-ish vibe of all his videos but what makes me subscribe and keep watching for the longest time is the creativity and randomness the videos have, emanating from the creator's ability, expertise and personality. And every video keeps getting better. i noticed the sort of hyperlapse that he said he was experimenting on. Very cool!! He makes all his videos light and fun (and informative) to watch even if it is documentary-ish. The cats, the crows, the space boat and the ducks, i love them. I just really enjoy this creator's craft. And ericsurf is really awesome to watch here too! One of the legends of Japan YT too!!
Everytime I watch your videos John it does make me appreciate not only Japan but life itself. :) For some reason when there is food involved in a video it makes me feel thankful that I am alive in this age. :)
I'd love to go to Asakusa.
Surfing Santa Claus and the Karate Kid in the same video. Legendary.
Add Kevin Riley to the mix and you have the newly reformed ZZ Top.
Hahahaha
My two favorite CZcams influencers in one episode, can’t get any better than that!!
You two guys have great chemistry together. Excellent video and great to see Eric on your channel.
Love you John.
15:00 haha I was having a rogue week and this made me laugh so hard. Please keep making videos! They’re such a source of joy for me
Only John Daub can make you love things about Japan. Thanks for the video!
Clicked as soon as I saw the notification.
when I visited Japan we stayed at a hotel near asakusa, so we went there several times!! the menchikatsu and melonpan stands you visited here were my favorites, as well as an oden shop. the lady who ran the shop asked me if I had oden before, and I said yes at 7/11. she was mortified and gave me some free daikon and told me to eat at her shop instead of 7/11 from now on 😆. I wish I could go back!
My 2 fav. JAPANESE based youtubers. Eric brings the funny food experience, and you the deeper insights in japanese culture.
Two legends meet!
The way the owner checked the temperature of the Taiyaki mold was amazing.
Amazing, John! Good to see you back at it again!
A channel worth subscribing peeps!!
Love it the video from the start to end
This episode was so much fun! Love seeing you guys together anyway, but the bit of comedic banter along with the creative edits really elevate this one - great job!
This reminds me a bit of the old Only In Japan videos. It fills me with so much happy nostalgia. Thanks, John!
Except better and in 4K! More street food episodes coming all over Japan. I love this series of street food guides.
John and Eric are making me so hungry right now also love the vids.
Street food! Yummy.
Eric really lovin' that sweet potato ice cream. ☺
Neat creative editing on the nikkuman segment with Eric casually eating and you speaking at hyperspeed. 😂
Thanks! The kids were off so I had to play around to distract viewers from the lousy sound there 😂 but yeah, I kept talking and Eric just enjoyed and was done! Hahaha! It was a highlight to edit that, make it more fun.
Melonpan with whipped cream! Take ALL my money now... :)
Edit: Wait, save some of that money for Karage, my favourite!
I used to walk around Asakusa with friends way back 1990-1997. There are a lot of street food that was really taste good with rice wine during winter days.❤️❤️❤️...Natsukashiii❤️
Yes yes more street food vlogs, givin us what we want!
Asakusa Menchi... I love them. Never fail to have 1-2 of it every time I go to Asakusa.
Love Asakusa! So much street food and delicious too. I miss eating fresh dango 🍡
Wow so this is how it looks like when two legend collab 🔥
Bravo John!! Your hard work shines in this episode. Hope you get more views & subscribers. You can sense when other youtubers are mailing it in with click bait, you provide substance. You make Asakusa proud, good job Ambassador!
Dammit John! NOW I’M HUNGRY! 😭😭
Glad to see John stil doing his thing man, been a minute since I watch these videos.
Great food in Asakusa? And on top Eric?
Count me in.😁
John, Eric has you nailed. You do talk too much, but thanks for the detail for we who only dream of visiting Japan.
this collab turned out great and really funny too!
Man two of my favorite CZcamsrs from Japan! Food looks great!

😀
Great video John is back with street food 👏👏👏👍😀✊✊🇯🇵🇮🇳⛩
thank you
This is one of the many areas I managed to miss on my last trip to Japan. All the more reason to go back!
Oh, definitely consider staying there then and calling Asakusa home base for Tokyo travel.
Eric Berg is a MUST when you do food videos in Japan. 😄
But I was really surprised to see him in this video, thumbs up. 👍👍
What a coincidence, I just finished watching Paolo’s Asakusa food tour from 3 years back.
I never get tired watching your videos John!
One talks to its food, the other makes love to it lol. Man this got me so hungry John. 👍👍👍
Best 25 minutes of today! I love this episode. I mean with eric as the guest star, and John's General Zod super eyes & mickey mouse sound, the A1 bokeh, and many foods..It's all there!💪🏻🏯🇯🇵
They have great street food there!
I love all the street food you ate! I can’t choose because everything is so tasty! I would eat it all! 😋
I do love menchikatsu!
I absolutely love those long walking shots!
Me too! Thanks for this. I’ll try to add more in. It gives a fun and total look at the area.
Almost like being there. Thanks
Watching right now…. So far really good.
God this is making me miss this place so much. When we visited in September 2015, Asakusa felt like a home away from home. From the food vendors, to the Tokyo Skytree greeting us every morning we walked outside and to the amazing temple. I still have my fortune I got from there too (It was the best luck too!). I can't wait to visit here again soon
You're looking good John! Love the new animated intro. I highly recommend staying in Asakusa. And don't forget to explore every alley they have the best taiyaki and daifuku along Nakamise St. And ohhh yeah Nikuman is definitely a must try steamed bun. Thank you for sharing. Brings back great travel and street food experience.
Glad to share the adventure with you in this video - definitely recommend Asakusa as the hub for a Tokyo visit to all international visitors! For the jet lagged, much more fun walking traditional streets than the dirty ones of Shibuya and Shinjuku.
THANKS FOR THE TOUR
ALL ARE DELICIOUS
GOD BLESS
This was f*cking surprising. Eric and john, i thought years, y not make a crossover video XD great.
Love your videos thanks 🙏
You know John, this is my way of experiencing Japan. Thanks
Kagetsudo is a tradition on any trips I make to Japan. Been there the last 3 times I've visited, just as they open in the mornings. Absolutely beautiful
Great episode. Lots of treasures. Thank you!
Fantastic! Great fun to see you & Eric! Now I’m hungry for Japanese street food. 😋💞
I absolutely loved this video. I can’t wait to go back to Tokyo to try some of these snacks! Thanks so much!
They are so lucky to live in Japan, being a foodie, a gamer, and a fan of JDM cars I am so jealous.
Really enjoyed this video! Thanks for all you do to bring Japan to us! You tha man!!!
Great job! Loved it!
Loving your foodventure with Eric!
An excellent over view of the food scene, thoroughly enjoyed it, wish I had seen this back in the late eighties before I visited Japan, such is life.
Been looking forward and waiting for your new video
Thanks john!!
So Awesome streaming 💜 😍 Yummy 😋 🍡⛩
2:07 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Just finished watching The Office for the second time :D Great video as always John! Can't wait to go to Japan and try all those!
Awesome new video, John! Asakusa is such a gem in Tokyo.
The food looks amazing!!
That was such a fun episode! The food, the banter, loved it! Definitely going on the itinerary!!
Well Done, John! Always looking forward to your videos!
Great editing John! Always a blast when Eric comes by!
Beautiful place, great food, good friends = perfect night out. Love it :)
One of the best videos I've seen of yours John, great entertainment... so happy I've booked to stay in this area when I eventually get to Japan.
Yes 😃 strolling & eating, high on my list of things I love watching you do ❤️ more please!
Thanks for another video John.
Love your videos John! Always look forward to you’re videos as it brightens my day
Absolutely love it john. Keep it up 👍
Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing yummy street food. ✌️
Great video and everything looked "Yummy"! Eric enjoyed his food with vigor as well!
I miss Japan and the food, and everything is yummy 😋. Thanks John and Eric!
What an amazing crossover, I'm going to eat myself silly in Asakusa this December now that Japan is finally open to foreign tourists
Such a fun video, John! I enjoyed the collaboration between you and Eric! This makes me miss Japan!!
I don't know if you would have the time, but would it be possible to do street foods around all of Tokyo wards? I'd love to have some ideas whenever we (eventually) get to go to Japan but we haven't decided at all where we'd want to stay or travel lol. I'm loving the vibe and editing of the street food tour here - your hard work pays off!
Also this is random, but that shot with you talking sped up and Eric eating in real time was neat.
Street food isn’t really a thing in most places in Tokyo. It’s kind of special in some places. Usually there is a reason for it. Most places have the same stuff too - takoyaki, taiyaki, stretch cheese from Korea, Yakitori - it needs a back story. What’s special about Asakusa is that most places have that. They’re not chains shops, not yet anyway. A lot of local biz. Sadly that’s ending because of the declining population, the next generation not wanted to run a shop in an old place and now nearly no tourism. I’ll keep digging though! Some good places ALL OVER JAPAN and will focus away from the capital.
I love street food, I'd love to try all of it. Thanks for taking us along you two, it was a very fun episode.
Absolutely amazing! John and Eric never disappoint. Get some! 🍻oh and nice editing👌
Live your live content and love the original style of content too! Glad to see more produced videos.
